I work in a school district where usually only teachers are required to work on Presidents' Day. They informed us this morning that this year, all support staff are expected to work also, and that it should be a "learning day". Our schedule from the beginning of the year shows us having it off without pay, and many of us have made plans based on being off. We're already having a learning day on Feb. 8th. At my school, learning day = do the same old assistant work we do every day just without kids in the building. With the appointments I already have scheduled, I'll likely end up using a sick day. Yes, it's within their rights, and yes, I'm happy I have a job, but it would be nice to be considered a human being for once...

I feel your pain. They have taken away President's day as a day off for our kids. You know that snow day we had a couple weeks ago? You know, the one where the streets were clear by 10 am but they got the whole day off? Yep, we have to lose the holiday to make up for it.

I know there are some parents/families who are not happy because they had planned a trip for the long weekend.

What ever happened to tacking a day or two on to the end of school? We get out way too early as it is.

May you always be overwhelmed by the Grace of God rather than by the cares of life.

We are making up 7 days from Hurricane Sandy and the Nor'Easter so no winter break. Other single days off have been taken. I don't mind too much. The kids need all of the help they can get.

So now this morning, for whatever reason, they've given it back to us. Either there was such an outcry or they realized that they'd have to pay us for a day that wasn't originally budgeted. I think somebody at the top of the food chain wasn't paying attention.... Whatever the reason, YAY!

Thanks for listening to me whine. I would have understood it better if we'd been making up some time like some of you have, but we have only had half a snow day so far this winter. We've got at least a week built in before we'd have to make it up anyway. It made even less sense that the kids weren't going to be around.

I'm glad for you to hear the decision was reversed and you got your holiday back.

However, I'm quite disappointed to see people have no issue with abusing the concept of a sick day to be treated as a self-declared holiday.

A little consideration goes along way, doesn't it.

One thing nice about our district is snow make up days are built into the calendar ahead of time. If we have one, we know exactly what day we will need to come into make it up. There are no surprises, which is nice.

Most places have gone to the concept of paid time off rather than "sick days" because they realize that grown adults can decide if/when they need to take a day. The company or district does not own her time; if paid time off is part of her contract, she has the right to take it for any reason she sees fit.

Why? They are my days, I will use them as I see fit. I am entitled to it and will use them whether I am actually sick, have appointments or need a mental health day. If I don't abuse the entitlement, who cares?

Oh FFS. They were told that they had the day off and planned accordingly. I don't see that as an abuse at all.

If my company tried to change the calendar after it was published, there would be about 10k people forming an uprising That would just not fly at all! Glad they reconsidered their decision.
