So Friday night my 12 yr old and her friend decided to get on Skype and see if they could find Justin Bieber. Well there was this user name of Justinbiebercanada and dd thought this was the real Justin. So she had her web cam on and when I asked her if he did she said no. So she said that they were texting through Skype when all of a sudden he asked her to show him her privates. She said she blocked and deleted him. So I get on her Skype and she cleared the history. I asked her why she did that and she said she was afraid that I would get upset that she befriended someone on Skype that she didn't know. I told her that now I can't see what he said to her and that she should never be afraid to come to me if she feels afraid or uncomfortable. So all in all I uninstalled Skype and I reported the this to the police department. I was wondering what if anything they could do? | |

I don't know if there's anything else you can do. But I think it was really smart to uninstall Skype, because I don't think your daughter is quite mature enough for it. I think you need to have a conversation with her where you explain that famous people aren't likely to just be on Skype available to chat, and if they are that they probably won't talk to random people they don't know. And that whole stranger danger online talk probably should happen as well.
I'm sorry this happened to her though, it's horrible that this even happens and is something that people have to worry about and be vigilant about. |

You need to have a chat with your 12 year old about appropriate Internet behavior. Why the hell is she Skyping people she does not know? Why is searching out a stranger to Skype something you allow??
You want to know what you can do to stop this? Prevent it in the first place by being a parent and not allowing Your tween to be able to put herself in adult situations.
Where were these girls when they were Skyping strangers? |

Creepy! And unfortunately, pretty common, I'm sure. I don't think there's anything you could do to help catch the guy. Just have a talk with your daughter about there being lots of creeps out there and not trusting people she doesn't know. |

I don't know what the police can or will do.
However you need to take responsibility for what you can do.
She doesn't sound like a very mature 12yo (she really thinks Justin Beiber has nothing better to do than wait around for Skype message from random 12yo girls? That doesn't even make sense)
Therefore you need to be responsible and supervise what she does online every minute. She should not even be able to use Skype without your express permission.
Read Carly's story a 14 yo who was murdered by a 50yo man she met online.
There is some good practical advice in the "how to keep safe" section.
Her mother now visits schools to educate teens about the risks.

Maybe safe shouldn't have a phone since she's not responsible enough to make good choices |

Called DH in to look at the OP, (he loves putting creeps in jail for a long time) and he spends lots of time with the folks at NCMEC.
If there is "any" information that the girl remembers, (this includes your skype account info) use the reporting tool at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). NCMEC Cyber TIP webpage
Report the website, and anything else that she can remember. The FBI has investigators that follow up on these things, and they can go to your ISP to look at logs showing activities.
If you already reported to the police department, depending on locality, the FBI and NCMEC may already be in the loop. Some local LE are better than others for sharing this information. You can still do a Cyber TIP report.
GENERAL PSA to anyone that is using a laptop with a built in camera, or tablet.
Unless YOU are using the camera, use a piece of opaque tape to cover the camera lens. There are lots of programs out there (many for legit purposes) that the "creeps" use to remotely access the camera, some you don't even know that the camera is "on" at your end.
