Is their phone dead? Or are they not answering? I thought if the phone was dead it would go straight to voicemail....
Thanks, |

On my phone, ringing then voicemail means the phone is on, but not being answered. Straight to voicemail means the phone is off/dead. |

I always thought they were just away/not answering. I agree, when it is off, I would think it would go straight to VM. |

My phone goes straight to VM if it's off/dead, but it will ring 3-4 times and then go to VM if I'm not around it or ignoring it. |

If I catch it right away, I can make my phone go straight to voice mail on the first ring. So it could be dead or it could be ignoring the phone. Depends.

Ours will go straight to voicemail if it is off, dead, or you deny the call.
If it rings and rings, it is just not being answered. |

The phone goes straight to voicemail if it's dead or if it isn't on. If it rings several times then goes to voice mail, it's not being answered. I don't always keep my phone with me so it will ring and then go to VM. |

There have been times that my DH has called me and he said my phone rang several times and went
to voicemail. I would tell him my phone didn't ring and I didn't get the voicemail. Hours later or the next day I would finally get the voicemail. This also happened to me once when my sister called me.

I don't always keep my phone on me. I leave it in the car, lose it in the house, etc.
Don't feel like you are being ignored. It could be that the person doesn't have their phone on them.

If it's off or dead it goes straight to vm.
Just because I don't answer the phone right away doesn't mean I'm ignoring you. Sometimes I'm driving. Sometimes I am at the store but I know our conversations are long and I want to hurry up check out and get home, where I will then return your call. Sometimes I'm in a place where answering the phone would be rude. Sometimes I've misplaced it somewhere in the house. Sometimes I am doing something and would prefer to not be interrupted.
As for my dh. Sometimes he is flying or in the simulator or in a meeting or any number of things.
I don't take it personal if someone doesn't pick up the phone. However if I have left them a voice mail and they don't return the call within a day or two and they are updating their facebook status every few hours then I feel like they are ignoring me. |

This has happened to me, too. More than once.
If I catch the call quickly, I can send it directly to vm on the first ring or two. Otherwise, if the phone is on, it will ring 4-6 times and then go to vm if I don't answer it. If the phone is off, it goes directly to vm.
I can also set individual people/phone numbers to go directly to vm. |

They're not answering. If the phone rings, it's not dead. |

I don't hear my phone when it's in my purse. I've tried putting my phone on vibrate and putting it in my back pocket or coat pocket but when walking down the street I don't feel it. |

Dh was recently having a problem with his iPhone. People would call and it would never ring. He would get a vm sometime later. He ended up having to reset his phone to fix it.
There are many times I don't hear my phone because I don't keep it attached to me.
My mother has a habit of leaving her phone in the car.
There could be a whole slew of reasons for not answering. |

On my phone and some others you can put it in a straight to voicemail mode wwithout turning the phone off too like if you are in a meeting so the person doesn't even wait for it to ring.

My mom works someplace that has really crummy reception. Sometimes it rings and rings and goes to voicemail and sometimes it rings a few times and then tells me she is out of area. In both cases, she's in the metal pole-barn at work with little to no reception and her phone isn't making a sound. |

Maybe they have privacy setting in their phone and are only accepting calls from certain people.
I do that.
I'm tired of getting calls from people selling windows or vacations

If you call someone and their phone rings a few times before voicemail they could be ignoring/not answering, or they could be on another call and not answer.
If my phone is off or dead it goes directly to voicemail. If I am on another call it rings a few times before voicemail.
