I could make a drinking game out of all the untrue BS people share on FB. Is it REALLY so hard to take the extra nanosecond to hit snopes.com? SINCE I started typing this a new one popped up - as if to mock me. Perfectly lovely people who I adore but people, please, GOOGLE THAT SH#$! Love, Official Hand Slapper of Facebook. (<- Not really but so tempting ...)

So far in the last HOUR I have read about the Soldiers Evacuating the Pentagon Daycare (untrue)

George Carlin's moving essay (untrue)

How to lock or not lock car doors (generally outdated)

I'm sure the choking doberman and that da#$ shark menacing the helicopter will be along momentarily

My cousins (60 y/o) actually believe that car door one. even though I redirected them to snopes about it.

They are going to buy a new without automatic door locks....you can't reason with stupid.

I feel sorry for the Police officer that gets mentioned in these untruths.

Misspeasy... the story is criminals can "catch your doorlock code with a device when you click your car open or close, so they open your car with smashing in.

It is only partly true In the 80's when the auto-door locks came out it could be done, but today it is not so easy and takes a lot time.

My dads postings would make you officially drunk in no time. I've called him on it, but he continues. He even told me that snopes was likely wrong and besides, he doesn't have time to actually read through snopes tiresome articles. Dude, you're retired. You have loads of time.

Casii - at least your dad owns it!

Some prefer "Well it's a good STORY!" and some variation of why should facts matter if it makes people "feel good" or "could happen."

When the stories give credit where not due or scaring old people out of power locks well then harumph!

The Choking Doberman will always have a place in my heart for being my first urban legend. Of course back in the 80's it was TRUE 'cause it happened a lady on my aunt's bowling team, or maybe it was her cousin

I have a very sweet friend that is retired, and while she is not on FB (which is probably a good thing ) she still forwards these bogus emails. She even starts out with, "I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE OR NOT, BUT ..." (yes, in all caps)

My dad on the other hand (who is also retired) sees it as a challenge and usually calls out any of the other goofball cousins who post BS on FB ... I just don't have time for all that craziness.

I have an uncle who forwards me everything under the sun like he's new to the internet or something [OMG did you know that Bill Gates is sending us all to Disneyworld? ].

It occurred to me several years back that he needed to meet somebody, so I sent him a link to an Amish dating site. I enjoyed that so much that every time he sends me something crazy [if I'm in the mood] I scour the interwebs for something equally crazy to send right back to him. He's never responded to any of it, which makes me wonder if he's only a sender & not a reader.

Back in the 90s, the needles were in the payphone coin return slots. There aren't any payphones left so they moved them to gas pumps!

My feed is littered with the George Carlin thing a lot recently.

Someone I knew posted about the Lincoln/JFK life similarities. I had seen it already debunked by someone else so I knew that a lot of the dates weren't true. My friend that posted it said "I don't know if it's true but it's cool if it is".

I posted and said "Snopes has debunked most of the dates, but it's a fun read" or something to that effect. Her mom comes on and says "Snopes has been proven wrong, so I don't tend to believe that site". So I posted back and said "A quick google search tells you that such and such was born on this date not that date so there is one incorrect date No Snopes needed." She didn't have much to say after that.

I don't usually ge into it with people, just depends on who it is and how froggy I am feeling that day.

Shark menacing the helicopter is that the video from my side of the world where every time a rescue helicopter tried to put down a rope large shark jumped out of the water and tried to bite it?

If so I really like that video, haven't seen it in years.

In class this morning some kids told me Steve from Blue's Clues killed himself. That one has been around forever. I had to show them several sources before they would believe that it was an urban legend. Then I have to explain what an urban legend is.

Writer mom, I think you could die of alcohol poisoning if you created a drinking game from the BS posted on Facebook.
It really disappoints me how gullible people are to blindly share all that crap.

I wish more people knew what snopes does and use that or google before they click share.

I used to think that it was just the older crowd that fell for those things and that passed them along. Especially back in the pre-facebook days.
But I just found out a young friend of mine fell for an e-mail scam that was so scammy it was a Scooby plot. How are people so clueless?

I seriously suspect that the people forwarding all this crap are also the people who rail endlessly about how the "liberal media" lies and is always wrong and doesn't fact check and stuff.

Stop spreading misinformation, liberal media! Meanwhile, read this super-cool story about the shark who bit the helicopter in half because the pilot was related to Lincoln AND to JFK.
