I caught the tail end of a segment on tipping on NPR.
It seems now that waitstaff want an a of 25% to 40% of the bill.
I didn't catch a lot of the show but it seem like like they waited it to be automatic, whether the service was good or not.
40%? that is the point I am staying home.

Sorry - no way am I tipping 40% regardless of good/bad service. I have tipped more than 20% before if the service was really good but I don't think I have ever tipped 40%.
I don't see that happening. I will tip what I think is appropriate based on the service (generally 15% - 25% ) and if a restaurant auto adds a tip larger than 18%, then I won't patronize them anymore.

More, more, more. Give me, give me, give me.
Maybe I am showing my age, but I remember when 10% was considered a generous tip. Now it is considered cheap. Even 15% is cheap. One must tip 20%.
I'm all for doing away with tipping, raising the prices within reason to pay a living raise, and firing any waitperson who is substandard. |

They can "want" or "expect" all they want. I'm a good tipper, generally 20% or I'll often round up so it ends up more. 20% is my max. If I find that I start getting poor service because waitstaff isn't satisified with my 20%, then I'll give less not more.

And yes I worked as a caterer. My tips were included in the bill. I NEVER saw a dime of it. The owners kept it all and then give us $10 extra in our pay. so I despise that tip added into the bill thing.

I waited tables in HS and early college. If somebody had left me a 40% tip, I'd have run after them assuming it was a mistake. Heck, even 25% would've left me asking myself if I should run after them.
I'm dating myself, but when I waitressed at a pretty nice restaurant, I'd say a 20% tip was highly uncommon then. And no, I didn't suck. Lol |

20% is plenty. I'm a good tipper, but seriously, 20% is enough.
I do tip a much higher percentage when I go out for lunch. I eat lunch (and dinner) by myself 4 days a week because I travel. Most of the time my lunch is $6-$8. I'm not going to tip less than $2, and I usually give $3. I also consider the fact that I am taking up a table that could have been seated with two or more people, and if there were two people at my table, they would get twice as much tip. I'm not taking up that much less of the servers time. |

I'm popping in to agree with Lucy as well. I worked in restaurants for many years, and my husband still bartends one or two nights and week and I've never, ever heard a server or bartender "expect" a 25-40% gratuity. The only time my DH ever sees tips in that range is from his regulars, and even those aren't regular tips, but more like a holiday-season "bonus" tip. I've honestly never come across this attitude, and I've known, literally, hundreds of servers and bartenders in my life. |

I don't think I have ever received that good of service that I would think they deserved a 40% tip, that is insane. If they want to make that much they need to go into a different profession that makes more money without relying on tips.

I haven't heard the story, but I will comment that it seems that 20% has become the "norm" for average service. It used to be 15% or 15 - 20% was considered a good tip. Now it seems like if you give less than 20% it is seen as cheap. Why is that?
I do think there is gratuity creep in our society - both the amount given and the types of jobs that expect it.
I also think that in *some* instances, even 15 - 20% is too much. If it's a very expensive service but not time consuming, sometimes 10-15% is still an excellent tip.

In some areas the expectation is higher.
They can go ahead and expect it. I tip according to service provided: 25%+ for amazing, excellent service; 20% for great; 15% for good; 10% if they barely managed to do their job...and if it's crappy service with bad attitude? Yeah...you get NOTHING! And it won't matter 'cause I won't be going back to that restaurant anyway.
The whole idea behind tipping is to motivate waitstaff to give good quality service. The tip is a reflection of that service so, if you do great, I'll tip you huge!
40%...sweet tiny Jamie! If that was normal tipping, I'D BE A WAITRESS! |

I've tipped everything from 0% to 50%. I tip based on the service and any special circumstances that may apply. I do NOT tip someone for simply showing up. If they want a tip, they have to earn it.
Suppose everyone went to their boss and said, "I expect a 25-40 percent raise for doing the same work."? Wonder how many would get it?

Um, nope. The standard is 15%, and with the way prices have gone up, that is plenty. If waitstaff doesnt feel that they are earning enough, they should ask to be paid more with no tips, or they should find another profession. Being asked to tip more and more professions more and more money is a pet peeve of mine right now.

I don't have an issue with the amount, but I'm having trouble figuring out where the line on who to tip is drawn.
I'm good with tipping food service, I guess because I'm just used to it. But I also feel like I can make sense of it by saying, I paid for the food, the tip pays for the service of bringing it to me.
But with things like massages? What I'm paying for is the ACTUAL massage, so then why am I tipping for the actual thing I already paid for? And really, that doesn't even bother me. Here's where I'm starting to lose my patience-
Last week I was in Florida. I paid (handsomely) for a shuttle ride to my hotel. There were 8 passengers. He was clearly irritated that I didn't tip him. But in my mind I already paid for the service. What's considered a 'tip worthy' performance on top of what I already paid? Playing good music along the way? But I thought, ok, maybe I should have tipped him and felt a little guilty.
Inside the hotel was a snack shop. They had coffee, but you poured, creamed, sugared and lidded it yourself. All the employee did was ring me up and take my money. There was a tip jar there.
I'm sorry, I think it's getting ridiculous. Just tell me what the service costs up front, let me pay for it, and leave me alone after that! |

I remember when 8% was the mandatory tip and 10% was generous.
The cost of the food should pay for the service and the food. If it does not then the restaurant should charge areal price and pay their staff more.

That segment turned out to be over 19 minutes.
Not once did I hear mention of waitstaff expecting 40% or even 30% tips.
The one thing about higher tipping that I did hear was that a FOOD CRITIC was saying that people should be tipping 20% minimum, even if the service is bad.
The whole segment was actually a debate on tipping vs. not tipping (and raising prices).
Much ado about something that was not even said.

I used the WallyPark at PHL last time I flew. The guy that picked me up when I left Philly was *awesome*. I was just pulling into my spot and he drove right up behind me, jumped off the van and ran over to my car to get my bags. I'm usually pretty okay with this, so I generally refuse this service (I have to carry them to my car, through the airport, etc, so I always pack my bags so I can). Nope, this guy was super chipper, wouldn't think of me carrying either my checked bag or my backpack. The whole ride to the airport he was chatting up everyone, double and triple checking the airlines for the passengers, got on some zippy music, etc. Again, when he stopped at each terminal, he jumped up, got all the bags and ran them over to the curbside checkin. He did that for everyone.
When I returned from my trip. The Wally Park guy was nice, but never once offered to help with my bag, didn't speak to anyone really, well, just seemed less chipper.
First guy - got a tip, return guy - nada. In hindsight I wish I'd tipped the first guy better.

ITA I'm really peeved that my hairdressers only take cash tip, I feel it's unfair I help them cheat their taxes.
I think it's only a matter of time that the tip percentage goes up, everything else goes up with inflation.
At bars in NYC and Miami, 20% tip is added to your bill. So you can no longer tip $1 a drink, but much more since drinks cost $12-15 per drink. |
