DD (almost 12 years old) has strep throat. She is taking amoxicillin 500mg capsules. The instructions are "take 2 capsules twice a day for 10 days". That is 1000mg twice a day. She is 104 pounds.
She threw up an hour after taking the first dose. She has not taken the second dose yet.
It just seems like a lot of antibiotics. She has not had strep throat in years, so maybe this is the way they treat it now? Anyone know? | |

I don't know about the dosage, but I do know she needs to take it with food or just after eating to help prevent the throwing up.
I hope she feels better soon! I used to get strep all the time, it sucks! |

I'd call the doctor. DD used to get strep a lot until she had her tonsils removed. The last time she had it was about a year ago. She weighed probably around what your DD does and I'm pretty sure she wasn't taking 1000 mg of Amoxicillin twice a day. | |

Link with meds and dosages. If she's taking amoxicillin that page says 40mg/kg per day in 3 divided doses (I used pediatric because of her age, but her wt is a small adult wt), which would be 2363.6 mg, rounded down to 2000mg sounds right. Her dr ordered it twice daily instead of 3x daily, probably physician preference. Sometimes it's easier to get kids to take meds 2x day rather than 3x day.
Have her take it with a full stomach, she'll feel a lot better.
If she still doesn't tolerate it and vomits, call the dr so something else can be ordered. | |

I hope she can keep tonight's dose down. She is not hungry or thirsty (her typical response to fever) but I am managing to get her to eat some crackers and drink some fluids finally. I know she will feel better when she gets the meds in her system, it is just a matter of getting them to stay down. She has never had trouble with amoxicillin before. | |

You are welcome, and I hope she feels better soon, poor thing! I've only had strep throat twice in my life. The last time I literally felt like I was going to die. I've never been so sick in my life. I feel for her! | |

If she can't keep tonight's dosage down, I would call the doctor in the morning. You may need to give her a smaller dosage more often or get the antibiotics IM. I have a lot of trouble with antibiotics and sometimes we need to get creative. |

I'm not 12 I'm an adult but I weigh 100 pounds and got over strep during the holidays. That was my dosage also. Strep in general makes me throw up though during the worst of it. |

Amoxicillin should not be taken with dairy products as it inhibits the GI tract's ability to absorb them. You can try giving them to her 2 hrs after a meal and she may tolerate it better.
If you have to give it to her before school you can cut the time to 1 hr after a meal.
Poor kid. Its no picnic. Hope she feels better soon. |

Here ya go:
Here's the recipe for our Magic Mouthwash:
1 Part Milk of Magnesia (2 tsp for her weight and age. She could have swallowed up to 1 tablespoon of this, but to create the mixture we only needed 2 teaspoons.)
1 Part Children's Benedryl (2 tsp for her weight and age. This was the maximum dosage she could have swallowed if she hadn't taken a Zyrtec.)
1 Part (or a little less) of water (1.5 tsp to make it easier to stir and mix)
I guess it lives up to it's name. I think having your sore throat eased really is magic. I sure wish I had known about it a long time ago. These over the counter remedies are always around in my house. Now that we know how to make it, we'll be saving ourselves a lot of money on throat spray and cough drops.

They use to give a similar concoction at the ER I worked for called "magic green" or something like that.
I also second taking the meds with yogurt and a good probiotic -- the ones in the refrigerated section at the health food store. |

I frequently dose Amoxicillin 100mg/kg/day so the dose is appropriate. I would encourage her to eat before she takes it. Twice per day is just more convenient with school, daycare, etc. | |

Gargle salt water, the worst of it lasted 3-4 days for me. The fever yucky part was from a Friday - Monday and I threw up off and on. I didn't eat hardly anything for 10 days and lost 6 pounds. It was rough.
Try to have her drink G2 Gatorade low sugar but same electrolytes. I made ice chips with them. |

PLEASE do not eat AFTER taking meds as this will also make you sick. If you put the food in first, the meds will sit ON the food. In the reverse order, food will hold the meds on the lining of the stomach, making the effects worse. Hope she feels better! |

I just wanted to add that the vomiting might not be from the antibiotics. My DS always vomits with strep throat and it's a very common symptom, so just keep that in mind. |

Thanks so much everyone.
She managed to keep everything down last night. I got her to eat some soup, and crackers and G2 before she took her antibiotics. She is still sleeping but hopefully will feel better when she wakes up.
This is the worst case of strep throat either of my kids have had. | |

Glad she's doing better. It sounds like a normal case of strep for our family. And a normal round of antibiotics. It's actually the first line of defense. When you start with recurring strep, they use much more powerful drugs than Amoxicillin. | |

I can't take that med. Ask for a different antibiotic instead. Amox makes me very sick, and shreds my nerves. | |

The doctor prescribed it for twice a day in order to avoid your child having to take meds during lunch time at school.
I second the suggestion about taking the meds after eating a couple of crackers or some dry cereal. | |

when our son was young and kept getting strep our pediatrician just gave him a shot of antibiotics. Said it worked faster and was one shot and done instead of 10 days of medicine. | |

They don't hardly do the shot anymore. I asked for it over the holidays. My doctors said most refuse to even carry it anymore and I was so sad. Last I had it was I guess 6 yrs ago at 24.
She said there were too many reactions and side effects people were having. |

They still do penicillin shots. DS just got one earlier this month.
He had strep, but we saw a different doctor, who gave him a flu test instead of a strep test. Somehow, he tested positive, but showed no signs of flu. He had every single symptom of strep, from fever to white throat to smelly breath to throwing up. Got a prescription for Tamiflu, but he'd been sick for 4 days before the office opened, so there wasn't any point filling it. He wasn't miserable like the flu makes you, just very sick with strep. Fast forward to a week later. He's still sick, with the entire back of his throat covered in white. His normal doctor said he needed a shot, because it had gone on too long. His normal doctor was most aggravated with the fill-in doctor for missing it.
I got a shot for strep just last year. And a cortizone shot as well. | |
