I'm not sure if anyone is still watching the Service Puppies in Ipswich any more, but one of the dogs, named Noel, is about to go into labor. I'm certain she'll have the pups when I'm asleep, but I'm excited to see the new puppies anyway! From the "Doggie Daily" blog I've learned that this is Noel's first litter, and I believe they think there are 4 to 5 pups. They've got her on lots of blankets to keep her comfy. When she sleeps you can see puppies moving inside her because her coat is so dark and shiny it reflects movement well. Oh, and Noel had a pedicure the other day as a treat, resulting in pretty pink "nails". link |

I must say, I had no idea Great Dane was a breed used for service dogs of any type. With their short lifespan and HUGE size, I would not think them a good choice.
What sort of service dog are they typically? |

My husband ran into someone in a coffee shop the other day with a Great Dane service dog. He didn't ask what kind of service the dog performed, though. I love Great Danes. They are awesome! |

From the link with the cam:
Meet the new litter of Great Dane puppies born October 18, 2012 at the Service Dog Project. Located in Ipswich, Massachusetts, the Service Dog Project rests on a 12-acre property with heated kennels, fields, and a large arena. These areas provide the necessary space to raise the dogs from birth to graduation, and even back for retirement if needed. Chaos 8 service puppies will eventually be placed with people who have Multiple Sclerosis, individuals with Friedreichs ataxia, and veterans with disabilities. Each dog receives extensive training for balance, and once a dog is paired with an applicant, the dog is uniquely trained to suit the recipients needs. |

I've been a faithful watcher since Chaos had her pups. I'm hoping something happens with Noel tonight. And there could be another litter in about 3 weeks, setting up dual litters like with Chaos and Moxie.
As for the life span, Carlene breeds with sturdier stock from outside the US. It allows for a lot of the health issues the show Danes have to not happen. Her dogs seem to live long and happy lives. |

Jen in Cal, it's great to have another puppy watcher! I haven't posted on the site yet, but I read it daily. I love Carlene's blog, which a pea alerted me to. I confess that I'm a huge Oscar fan, though was surprised when Carlene wrote that Harliquin's are a little slow. |

That poor girl looks so uncomfortable. I feel kind of bad for her because she keeps tearing up all the blankets in an effort to nest and then moving to one of the other spots, and then her person undoes all the hard work she's just done. I can just picture her thinking, "OH MY GOD LEAVE IT" |

Ratqueen, I just read Carlene's blog called The Doggie Daily and she says that the "moms to be" like to try to get under something, so I think Noel is trying to dig up the bedding. Here's an earlier post from a few days ago -
NOEL IS WANDERING--- THAT DOES NOT REALLY QUALIFY AS BEGINNING LABOR-- BUT SE IS WANDERING... GOT TO BE VERY CAREFUL LETTING HER OUT... ONLY IN CONFINED AREA.. I DO NOT KNOW WHY- BUT EVERY PREGNANT DOG HAS TRIED TO GET UNDER TH E PORCH -- AN AREA ONLY 2' HIGH IT IS NOT ONY TOUGH TO GET THEM OUT... BUT YOU THEN HAVE TO CRAWL IN THAT SPACE TO BE SURE THEY DID NOT HAVE A PUP UNDER THERE...-- WE HAVE IT FENCED OFF BUT A REALLY INTENSE MOM BROKE THAT FENCE-- SO AT THE MOMENT USE THE MILLION DOLLAR FLASHLIGHT AND GO OUT WITH HER IN A VERY CONTROLLED MANNER.
I need to go to bed, but maybe I'll check in a few hours.

Noel is three years old and this is her first litter. Dad is a Harl so there is a possibility of Harl pups. Those that have watched Chaos and Moxie's pup know how hard it is to watch only blacks and mantles. Hard to tell them apart. I think that is why Oscar is such a favorite. He's easy to spot.
They have taken her to the vet for x-rays. They are also in the middle of a storm that has apparently knocked out the power and the camera. Footage now is from earlier and is on rerun. |

Thanks for posting the link. I've watched bald eagles and black bears before. I'll be glued to the screen today.

First born - boy. That's all that is known. Megan posted on her FB page. He has good coloring. Mantle or Merle. Too much black to be a Harl.
I'm following the comments so I'll keep here up-to-date as I can. I need to work at some point.
