DD's middle school PTA has sponsored a skate night to night. They recommended that we stay so I did. Here I sit at the skating rink on a Friday night. Disco ball lights, top 40 music, hundreds of teenagers, girls squealing, boys trying to act cool , and SO MUCH noise!
Change the ice skates to roller skates and I'd swear I was back in1982 Such great memories...sigh
Anyone else spend their Fridays at the skating rink????? |

I did back then!
Now I do it on Saturday and Sunday. My youngest DD and her friends have been going every other weekend for about 4 months. They even did a 24 hour lock in over MLK day weekend. It is the big thing around here lately, the rink is packed every weekend. Roller skating and roller blading are still hot around here. |

My youth group used to go to Christian skate night once a month. They would play all Christian son songs and someone would give a devotional halfway through. Half the night would be spent trying to finagle a couples skate with the current crush.
The one song that immediately comes to mind is Trumpet of Jesus by the Imperials. It was a fun skating song. What songs do you think of from those skate nights? |

I always love to see posts about roller rinks (I know this technically started as ice skating). I manage a roller rink and we are still really busy. I love to watch all the funny interactions with the preteens. And I am sooo glad I don't have to do that again! |

Oh yeah, my friends and I spent a LOT of Friday nights at the skate rink when we were 15 or 16. My experience was not quite like Jenjie's though. Instead of 'Trumpet of Jesus' we listened to 'Am I Ever Gonna See your Face Again' by The Angels ("Am I ever gonna see your face again - No way, get F*** ed F*** off!" ). That was the favorite skating song in 1982. And instead of the devotional halfway through, all the kids would go up the back and light up a ciggie, maybe have a bit of a pash. Gosh, I'm sure our parents thought we were all safe and sound, innocently skating around.....

yes, but was there any Ms. Pac Man, or Asteroids, being played in the arcade area?? then you'd KNOW you were back in the 80s!! I attended my fair share of middle school trips to the skating rink in that time frame... sigh... the memories!
(we took a school bus to and from the rink, though- that left more time for innocent middle-school flirting and hand-holding! )

I spent a lot of Friday nights skating. Supposedly with my two older sisters watching me. What Mom didn't know was they were dropping me off and going to hang out with boys. It worked pretty good too until the night they forgot to pick me up. The rink owner called my parents who pulled into the parking lot to pick me up at the same time my sisters did. My sisters still had a carload of friends with them. Wow was my Mother mad. The worst part is that she made me to to bed before they got home after dropping their friends off so I didn't get to see them get in trouble. And they were made at me for giving the rink owner our phone number. Hey I was 12 and he said he was either phoning my parents or the police because I was the only kid still there! |

Our favorite songs were "The Gambler" and "King Tut." We had complicated routines and everything...
Then we'd go play Air Hockey and eat Pac Man sherbet popsicle things and Fun Dip.

" Anyone else spend their Fridays at the skating rink????? "
The local skating rink was *the* place to be on a Friday night when I was in junior high. Especially during the school year, before the amusement park opened for the season. Whenever I hear the song "Don't stop 'till you get enough" it takes my memories right back there!

I spent many hours at a roller rink growing up in my hometown. About three weeks ago we were invited to a skating party at the same rink. It was my DD6 first time and she loved it. So much that we returned the following weekend with my son and now they both love it. She wants to have her 7th b-day party there.
The memories flood back when I'm there. Especially when I roll up to the snack counter. It's so weird.

"Back in Black" was the song we all skated to, and the "In the Air Tonight" with the drum solo in the middle.
I had orange pompoms on my skates, a black satin jacket with the name of the skatery on the back and--- I was "going with" the DJ. Never fully mastered backwards skating, though. |

And AussieMeg, I'm not familiar with this song:
listened to 'Am I Ever Gonna See your Face Again' by The Angels ("Am I ever gonna see your face again - No way, get F*** ed F*** off!" ).
but we did something similar with "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol. We''d all yell "hey! Get laid get f***ed!"
Such wholesome teens we were--NOT. |

I spent many, many weekends in jr. high at the skating rink. Did anyone else ever play the Four Corner Game or Shoot the Duck?
I don't know the name of the song, but the lyrics were something like "Knock Three Times on the Ceiling if you want me" and we would all pound our skates on the floor 3 times. We had no idea what it meant at the time.
Good times! I lived in such a small town that the first time I "moonlight skated" with a boy, my mom already knew by the time I got home. |

I have hockey practice right after the Saturday night public skate ends, so I get to see this every week. Disco lighting, loud music, flirting teens,..nothing's changed from when I was a teen except the songs they play.
Then it's our turn and we come out and look threatening with our sticks and helmets and chase them all off the ice. But they usually don't turn the music and lighting off right away, so we dance a little bit during our practice.
Usually, we're the only ones there at that time. Last week there was a church lock in on the other rink, and there were tons of teen girls. One of my teammates used to be in a boy band and still looks the part. The girls were all waving and flirting with him through the glass. Sorry girls...he got married in December! But it was fun watching them.

Amy that was Tony Orlando and Dawn. Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me, twice on the pipes if the answer is no... true story, that song came to mind the other day. It registered enough that I thought, "i had no idea what it was about " but not quite enough follow through to put much thought into what it was actually about. I was too busy pondering the words to YMCA and Love Train. gotta love satellite radio! |

And Aussie Meg! very different circumstances indeed. The worst I did was hope the devotional would end quickly so we could get back to skating and scoping out the boys. Now I'm the one giving the devotionals for the kids who wonder, "when will she stop talking already! " |

I practically lived in the rink in the early '80's. My first DH and I went almost every night - he was such an awesome skater and I felt pretty just having him spin me around the rink.
I still get misty eyed when I hear 'Babe' on the radio; it was usually the last song of the night 'couples only'. |

Me neither!! I was so jealous of the kids who made skating backwards look so effortless, and so darn cool!
Most of the girls who owned their own skates had the white boot skates. My mum bought me a pair of black with yellow strips skates - pretty tough I thought!

I had white boots with orange wheels and green pompoms. And I can skate backwards like a champ. On ice skates, I can even do spins. I was sooooo cool.
The rink is definitely the hot spot hang out. The middle schoolers free skating on one rink and the high schoolers on the other rink with the HS hockey team.
All of my kids have had ice skating lessons and my MS DD is actually fairly good. She quit just as she was starting jumps. She has $400 white boot skates. |

Sunday evenings used to be "Birdcage" night....girls skated for free, so of course all the guys would show up. We'd play "moon buggy" in the arcade and share a plate of chips between 6 of us, lol. Then there'd be speed skating to "I See Red" by Spilt Enz, and couples skate to "True" by Spandau Ballet. Sigh..... I still have my skates; I had indoor (wood floor) skates with yellow wheels and gold glittery laces. My outdoor or cement floor skates had hot pink wheels and hot pink glittery laces.
I never figured out going backwards except for a little bit, and I only spin when I stop. |
