Next week would be Kaitlyn's 23rd (WOW) birthday and we are looking for something to do to "celebrate" .. I don't want to do a balloon release and was looking at the sky lanterns .. they look so pretty floating in the sky BUT I am afraid we may start a wild fire
So has anyone here released the sky lanterns ?
AND do you have any ideas on what we could do instead of (we have already done a butterfly release, but we are looking at doing something late in the afternoon so light may be an issue
Thanks

I know they've been outlawed in several states because of fire danger. I went to a graduation where they were released. They were kind of duds & didn't really take off for some reason or another. They sure look pretty in some of the pics I've seen though. Happy Birthday to Kaitlyn!

I know in Utah they are going to pass legislation banning them. We are also the second driest state in the nation too.

We did this at a wedding this past summer. We were on an island, and it had a private beach. The idea was that we would set them off, and they would drift off over the ocean and up. Well, that didn't work out. The wind was blowing in off the water, pushing everything up into the trees on the hill. I was absolutely terrified we were going to set our beach house on fire, or some other person's beach house on fire. I am not big on candles/fire to begin with, and this is just not something that I would ever want to do on my own, even though it is beautiful. We did have to chase a few lanterns down and resend them because they got too close to the palm trees on their way up.
It was kind of a hassle getting them lit, but I think that was because of the wind. And the idea was that you just kind of hold them up in the air and let go and they just go up. But that didn't exactly work either (again I think due to the wind).
I felt that it was not the peaceful loving moment that the bride was looking for, but that may be because I was honestly scared of the fire. She and her new husband were quite pleased with it, and said they were going to set 1 off every year on their anniversary. |

Did them before, You need a calm night, after a few days of rain.
Hold them till you feel the slight tug of the lift effect, lift and let go.

Besides the fire danger, they have metal wires in them for the structure. Animals that graze (wild and domestic) can and do ingest these and it becomes embedded in the gut and leads to a slow painful death.

I've done them as part of a festival in Korea, it was on the ocean and they were to drift out over the sea. Beautiful- they were so incredibly beautiful! But, some drifted into the parking lot and came down on cars, in bushes, etc. Too hard to control, and they don't float until they go out all the time- many came down still alight.
I love them, but they are just too dangerous I think.

I've never done them but my neighbor behind me was letting them go except I didn't realize it. I thought they were UFO 's. I was losing my shit, and then my boyfriend calmly pointed out that they were Chinese lanterns. They are very pretty, but they sure do look like UFO's when they get high enough. |

Have you considered a butterfly release? They come in an ice packed box. You let them warm up in a jar then release them. Happy birthday Kaitlyn.

We did them last Canada Day. The ones that we had burned up completely, high in the sky. We also did them over the bay. They are indeed beautiful.

My sister owns a dove release company. I've watched many of her releases, and they bring tears to my eyes every time. The doves all rise up together, circle the area several times, and then take off.
Now for the spoiler:
They aren't really doves, they are homing pigeons. Kind of takes a bit of the drama out of it to find out that they are pigeons, not doves, but it's still beautiful. After they do their send off, they all fly home! My sister raises them herself, and does a brief educational piece on them if desired. She lets people release them by hand, or they can all be released from the basket.
Here is a pic from a release done at the start of an Alzheimer's Memory Walk:

I've never set any off but I have seen them being released. Just make sure they are legal and okay to do where you are. The last time I saw them released, the police showed up and said they couldn't do that - it was illegal apparently.

LOVE the idea of the dove/pigeon release but for some reason time has gotten away from me and I am thinking I may not have enough time BUT I am going to look into it (and the butterfly release .. we did that for her first Angel day and it was beautiful)
Thanks again for the suggestions

Did she love butterflies? I think doing the same sort of butterfly release every year would keep the focus on her memory rather than the item. |
