How long do you leave your flue open?

I just had myself a lovely fire in the fireplace this evening, and now it's pretty well banked and I'd like to go to bed, but I still smell the smoke, and would prefer not to wake up asphyxiated in the morning.

However, just before I fixed said lovely fire, I realized that the flue was open. My last lovely fire was Sunday night, which means it's been open all week long, and it's been f-ing COLD this week! Plus, I just got the heating bill, and it was, yeah, ouch. So I really don't want to go to bed with it open and then forget about it, but I also don't want to go to bed with it closed and then die.

Opinions?

I always wait until the morning. I am always afraid of it not being totally out so I wait.

We always wait until morning also. It's just too much of a risk not to. Even then, we still check the ashes for hot spots. DH closed the damper one morning when he went to work and the house was really smoky/smelly when I got up a couple of hours later. Waiting is the best thing to do.

We don't have a wood fireplace now, but when we did, I always left it open overnight too. We rarely used the fireplace because it seemed to suck all the heat up the chimney and we would lose what we had gained from the fire and more. If you have a glass shield to put up in front of the fireplace, that might help some.

We have well-fitting glass doors on our fireplace and that does help in keeping all the warm air from going up the chimney while we're waiting for the ashes to die out.

I close mine in the morning. Safety is worth the heating bill.

We keep ours open all the time. Even in Wisconsin weather. DH seems to like the house aired out.
The rest of us not so much.

Thanks for answering, all. I left it open and this time I remembered to close it! It sure was frustrating last night when I realized it had been open all week.
