May will be perfect! We usually go the first week in April & luck out most of the week on weather, we've been once in May & it was great all week.
We've stayed a lot of places but I'm not sure I loved any of them since I'm always ready to try some place new.
I would suggest staying east of Destin.
Miramar Beach is good, San Destin is good, anything along 30A is awesome.
I hope I don't offend anyone, but we've basically got a rule of thumb that if a condo has "walking distance to the Whale's Tail" in it's description we pass. In our experience that end of the beach tends to be a bit rowdier & it's heavily enforced with beach patrol guys. And although they're doing their job, it gets old to prove every 45 minutes that you've paid for the rental chairs you're sitting in.
Of course, we go on Spring Break - lots of high school seniors & college kids. Probably a whole different thing in May.
If I could stay anywhere & price wasn't an issue I'd stay in Grayton Beach, Seaside or Rosemary Beach. You can park at your condo & not have to drive the rest of the week. You can walk to book stores, coffee shops, restaurants & of course the beach in all of those towns. They're my 3 favorites.

Anything along 30A!!! We've been staying there since Seaside was first built.
There are plenty of communities along 30A, Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Watercolor, etc. Old fashioned beach communities like Grayton Beach and Seagrove still exist as well.
We've used the rental agencies at the beach communities, as well as Dune Allen Realty and ResortQuest. | |

I agree, 30-A is the place to go. Grayton Beach, Rosemary, and Seaside are our favorites as well. We go every year, counting the days til the last week in June! |
