After reading your post and letting them sink in I realise a lot of what u were saying was the reason I was not happy with the total look. Things will never totally flow because some of the furniture was bought 20yrs ago. Its still in great shape so the cheap me doesnt want to replace it. What I think I need to do is get the great room and dining room to flow. I feel I need to choose a color. I think I am 1-going to replace the red rug replace with a jute rug. ( I tryed to move chevron rug into great room but I like it better in dining room)
2- replace the red accents in great room with yellow or lt tan
3- replace curtains, not sure what I will do hear, lt tan most likely but all 3 windows will match

do u think these are reasonable changes that will help with the flow. I have my big girl panties on so would love any and all advice.
original: need help in deciding what paint color to replace red with.
pic 1 shows the area rug in the dining room
pic 2 shows a new pic wall. The vertical frame, subway art and sunflower pic will be slightly higher, they will be attached to wall.
pic 3- shows another new pic wall, the gold frame on top shelve and cream on bottom shelf will be painted, one to match the wall(want to paint over the red but what color?)

this room is really just part of a nice size kitchen. welcome all suggestions. pictures

updated with more pics. the kitchen, dining room are 1 room but only a l shape island separates it from great room. sorry pics blurry but quick pics with cellphone

I would paint it either a lighter shade of yellow or grey then what is in your rug. Love your rug!

I like the rug and the picture wall. I think I would go with grey.

I like all your colors except the rug. Not sure if it is the design or the colors, but for me, it doesnt look right. I think I may have gone with darker colors in the rug.

Or what about a blue? Like cobalt.

I would match the grey in the rug...hard to tell from pictures...what is the window covering like? does it match the rug?

I like the rug and think it's a good starting point. Part of the problem is that you have the dark red, and it looks like a country style valance in the family room, and then a Parisian style valance over the door. Too many things going on. If you like the rug and those colors, I'd go with some gray to start lightening everything up and then remove the items that don't match the more clean/modern style.

Here are some yellow/gray/white pins I have that might help:

It's still black and what, cream? I think it could still work with the other colors. I've always wanted to make one of those cornice boards but haven't done it yet!

None of it goes together...the rug is...modern, straight lines, and bright yellow colors. The curtians seems country, as does the other side towards the living room. What look are you going for exactly?
You've got too many themes going.

I would probably go with a grey on the walls and white trim(and crown molding) to brighten it up and make it look fresh. A lot of people cringe at the thought of painting the trim and crown molding but I like things crisp and clean looking. I think the furniture tends to make it look country especially the corner hutch. I really like the counter top and the grey would go really nice with it. Its a really nice space you have to work with. Like what you did with the shelves and frames.

thanks dcasta

my dh made the cornor shelf and if i replace it he would give me the silent treatment, not worth it!

the furniture is country. all the black on cornor shelf and table and chairs were country blue prior to me refinishing them this summer. we just put the granite in this summer.

Love your table and chairs. Quite Early American. I like your red accents. The chevron rug doesn't go with either of your rooms. I like the valance in your living room. I would have used something with red in it for the fabric on the cornice. It would have tied the rooms together better. Maybe you can find a different fabric and redo it. I can see you using a red rug in front of your sink and finding a new rug with some red in it to go where the chevron one is. While chevrons are hot right now, the style will pass and date your room.

Now, since I like Early American and antiques, this, of course, is the way I lean for your room. I have a great heart shaped braided rug in front of my sink.

ETA: I like your red painted walls and would leave the natural wood as it. Personally, I feel awful when I see nice wood painted and have striped more than my share over the years. Also like your picture shelves.

Oh I like the corner shelf I just meant it is country style. It would actually stand out nicely with a pretty grey color on the wall. It would do it way more justice. The counter is what makes me think of a fresh crisp color. Love it.
I did say most people would probably hate to paint the trimming. I have always had natural wood and my son just bought a house with white trim and crown molding and I just love it. So fresh.

dcasta i think your ideal of gray and white would be lovely, very lovely but if i paint the trim there i would have to paint the trim in kitchen and then it would but me it didnt match the rest of the house, my problem. think I'm going to order a 6x9 jute rug and then decide what rug it will replace. who knows, just frustrated at this time.
