Just saw a news alert on Twitter that it's over and there is supposed to be a press conference any minute with the details. It didn't say anything further.
Anyone know what happened??? I hope the boy is safe!

We have often asserted and we affirm it yet again that no fact in history is better attested than the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It must not be denied by any who are willing to pay the slightest respect to the testimony of their fellow men. That Jesus, who died upon the cross, and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, did literally rise again from the dead. (excerpted from Dance Your Shoes Off, Second Baptist Church)

My local news says this:
Child safe, kidnapper dead after 7 day standoff in Ala.
Posted: Feb 04, 2013 4:51 PM EST Updated: Feb 04, 2013 5:11 PM EST
MIDLAND CITY, AL (WSFA) -
After seven days with few developments in the case of a child hostage standoff in the southeast Alabama town of Midland City, authorities say the crisis has come to an end.
Details are limited at this moment.
Reporters on scene reported hearing a loud explosion a short time ago. An ambulance was later seen leaving the scene but without emergency lights or sirens activated.
State Representative Steve Clouse confirmed that the child, identified only as "Ethan" is "okay". The kidnapper, Jimmy Lee Dykes is said to be dead.
An official news conference is expected shortly. Tune into WSFA 12 News for the latest information and continue checking back on this story for additional updates shortly.

Thank goodness. I hope the little boy will be ok. I can't imagine how this will mess him up. Curious about his motive and how they got the boy. Wonder if we will ever know. I guess we should just be glad Ethan is out and safe.

7 days is a freaking long time to be in a hole with a lunatic. I hope the little boy can overcome whatever trauma he's gone through. |

Best possible outcome-kid safe, kidnapper/murderer dead. I'm so glad that they were able to get that little boy back to his mother.

Thank goodness the little fella is out of there. I am afraid that it will take him a long time to recover from this past week, but the good news is that he made it through and now has the chance be back in his parents arms. I was afraid that might not happen. |

Just got this from our governor's office:
MONTGOMERY - Governor Robert Bentley on Monday issued the following statement upon the conclusion of the Dale County hostage situation:
"Shortly after 3:00 p.m., I spoke with Colonel Hugh McCall of the Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security Director Spencer Collier. They informed me that law enforcement had breached the bunker, the child was safe and the abductor was killed.
"I want to thank the law enforcement, first responders and all additional personnel who worked tireless hours to bring this situation to a resolution. They performed heroic efforts, and they should be praised for how they handled themselves in a professional manner.
"I am thankful that the child who was abducted is now safe. I am so happy this little boy can now be reunited with his family and friends. We will all continue to pray for the little boy and his family as they recover from the trauma of the last several days.
"At the same time, we also want to remember the family and friends of the bus driver, Charles Poland, Junior. This man was a true hero who was willing to give up his life so others might live. We are all inspired by his courage and bravery.
"I ask everyone across the state, and the nation, to continue to lift up these families and the entire Midland City community in your prayers."

Assuming the kidnapper was mentally ill I do extend the grace to say I hope death was instantaneous. To be so sick must be awful too. |

I am afraid that it will take him a long time to recover from this past week
Sadly it probably will.
My cousin was kidnapped as a child, he was held for just over a week. Once he was released he had lots of problems (night terrors, bed wetting etc) then suffered a lifetime of depression and last year at age 42 he killed himself.
It ruined his life. | |

They said that they dropped a camera down the hole at some point. They became concerned when the kidnapper began pacing while holding a gun.
That way they were able to go in knowing where Ethan was and where the kidnapper was. |

Such good news for Ethan and his family!
And I think his Mother's strength is amazing.
I hope the family has access to whatever services
Ethan needs to ease back in to his life and school.
People are going to be so curious.

People are going to be so curious.
And I hope that people realize tha if the family chooses not to come forward, that is their right. I am sick of people thinking that they have a right to know eveything about every situation. |

Blessed Be! | |

We DO have a right to know the outcome. Ethan is a child of our community, and the siguation has disrupted our entire community, our very lives. We also have a right to know as much as possible about Jimmy Dykes mental state. He has dozens of relatives here. I live about 2 blocks from one of them.

No offense, but you don't need to know anymore than you already do - whether you are their neighbor or not!
The little boy is safe, and the kidnapper was killed - that is all any of us need to know. The families both have a right to their privacy if they that is what they choose.
I'm happy to hear he is back with his family. I hope he can heal...
