No Chris, we are HIS boss.

WashingtonTimes.com: "Chris Rock: President Obama 'our boss,' 'dad of the country'"

Actor and comedian Chris Rock called President Obama the "dad of the country" as he rallied on Capitol Hill to support his father figure's call for new gun controls.

"I am just here to support the president of the United States," said Mr. Rock, a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member whose most recent acting roles include a voice role in the animated feature "Madagascar 3," a spot in "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and guest turns on the FX comedy "Louie." "The President of the United States is, you know, our boss. But also, you know, the president and the first lady are kind of like the mom and the dad of the country. And when your dad says something, you listen. [And] when you don't, it usually bites you in the [expletive] later on. So I'm here to support the president."

Though Mr. Rock kept his Wednesday remarks brief, he has often incorporated gun control into his comedy routines.

"The gun lobby also says people need to be able to protect their property," Mr. Rock said last month, according to deadline.com, "but every mass shooting is done by guys who live with their mother. So I believe you should need to have a mortgage to buy a gun. A mortgage is a real background check. Even if you go to jail for 30 years, you've still got to pay your [expletive] mortgage."
I usually like Chris Rock, but this level of public kowtowing is just a bit too repugnant for my taste.

... outrage outrage outrage ...

I don't think anyone expects Chris Rock to interpret the Constitution for them. He takes artistic license for entertainment purposes.

I think the real problem here is that Chris Rock espouses a view contrary to the preferred one.

I have no idea where you got this from the OP.

The joke about having a mortgage is funny. It's actually untrue that every mass shooting is a kid living with his mother, but whatever.

The part about the Obamas being our national parents and we ought to obey them and do whatever they ask for fear of something bad happening is what I found offensive in that riff.

Offensive may be a little strong for my point of view...distasteful and inaccurate though for certain.

Seems strange that a public figure (comedian or otherwise) would propagate an idea like that, that our leaders shouldn't be questioned because they are somehow above us when the exact opposite is true.

What joke are you referring to... Chris Rock, his comments or the OP?

And who needs to get a life? Chris Rock who just compared the President and First Lady "kind of like the mom and dad of our country". I'm sorry, I have parents. In NO WAY do I consider the President/First Lady "kind of like my mom and dad". Or maybe the citizens of our country who stay informed and can get outraged at the nonsense they feel is going on?

Do you think Chris Rock felt the same way when the Bush's were in office? George and Laura were "kind of like his mom and dad"? Hmmm... I think Chris Rock needs to leave the comedy to the big screen.

And just to add to my thoughts above...
Please don't forget, Chris Rock, that we are empowered with THREE EQUAL branches of government to guide our country based on the wishes of the people. I want a leader out of our president... not a rock star who likes to hang out with Beyonce and make late night t.v. appearances.

I don't think Chris was joking when he was calling them mom and dad like or our boss.

Are you asking us or tell us? Usually I find Chris Rock very funny, this time, I think he missed the mark. I do however think that the line about mass murderers all living with their mothers kinda amusing. Chuckle worthy. I also respect that he wants to do something about gun violence. Good for him for taking a stand.

I have a sense of humor, but I'm not laughing. I think the mass murderer joke is to soon and in poor taste.

It doesn't really suprise me (or bother me) that he views the president and first lady 'like parents.' That is obviously HIS opinion. That's definitely not how I view them.

Actually, we are the President's boss. He works for "We the People" and never the other way around. Though I realize neither Chris Rock nor Obama has gotten that memo yet.

I don't find it humorous and I wouldn't joke about such gross misunderstanding of basic US civics.

Presidents have been referred to as the father of the nation before.

But I can see where that comment or joke might get under a person's skin. I remember my reaction to President Bush's, "I'm the decider" quip. I didn't like it much.

Presidents have been referred to as the father of the nation before.

Are you talking about the "founding fathers" who designed the framework for the government, some of whom were later President? I think that's quite a different context, and that's the only context I've heard where Presidents are referred to as "father".

No. Only one president was given that name- George Washington. I would hope I don't have to explain how his contribution to the creation of this nation earned him that title. (ETA: he was given this epitaph after he had passed away as people remembered and honored him. I would think he would have rejected the title if used while living since he was very purposeful to not put himself as president as above others.)

The Founding Fathers is a specific term used to describe the men who helped to form this nation freeing us from British rule and establishing the Constitution. Founding Fathers does not only include presidents.

Very very different from likening a modern president to being our "daddy" or our boss.

Yes, he's a an American and he's a comedian, but if you watch the video clip you'll see he wasn't really joking. He was being a little bit light-hearted but was pretty serious, especially given the topic of the press conference.

Lucy, I agree with you here.

However, the view being espoused by Rock seems to be one of "do what you're told" 'cause he's "our boss" and "kind of like the mom and dad of the country".

Is my view contrary to that one? Of course. A lot of people's are. He is perfectly right to express his opinion as I am perfectly right express my opinion about his opinion as obliolait is likewise right to express an opinion about my opinion of the opinion Rock expressed.

If I ever start to feel that any president is my daddy I will petition the court for emancipation. The people behind Chris Rock were not laughing like they thought the "daddy/boss better listen" comment was a joke they were nodding in agreement. They did laugh at the last line but I think he was dead serious with the first part.

I guess I could be wrong. I have been wrong before. BUT:

Founding FATHERS

George Washington was born on February 11, 1732, but in 1751 Great Britain changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. An act of Parliament added eleven days to make the adjustment complete and in 1752 Washington celebrated his birthday on February 22!

John Adams was the first President to live in the White House when he came to Washington, D.C. in November of 1800. However, he was only there for four months after losing the election of 1800 to Thomas Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson has been described as a: agriculturalist, anthropologist, architect, astronomer, bibliophile, botanist, classicist, diplomat, educator, ethnologist, farmer, geographer, gourmet, horseman, horticulturist, inventor, lawyer, lexicographer, linguist, mathematician, meteorologist, musician, naturalist, numismatist, paleontologist, philosopher, political philosopher, scientist, statesman, violinist, writer. He was also fluent in Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, and German!

Are the first three. So it looks like we had NUMEROUS Fathers!!!
George Washington
John Adams
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
James Monroe

I think Chris Rock was taken out of context.

The only president called the Father of our Country is George Washington.
Founding Fathers is a collective body of men who formed the foundation of our government and the Constitution. Some went on to become President later. But nobody called them the father of the country.

I realize Rock is supposed to be a comedian but I rarely find him funny. This is no exception.

Jesus, who the fuck really cares what Chris Rock says? He's a comedian. It's not like he's secretly planning a coup d'etat for God's sake.

Some people on this thread are really going to get a stroke before President Obama's term is done.

Since when are comedians taken seriously? I mean, by the very nature of the word, they aren't.

Much ado about nothing. As usual.

Ditto, Frenchie.

Regardless of verbiage, there is absolutely no comparing the Founding Fathers and President Obama. The Founding Fathers established a limited government that was accountable to the people. President Obama has a slightly different idea of his role.
