I realize newscasters/weather folk have a responsibility to inform the public of potentially hazardous weather. But there is a point when they go overboard! We are expecting a lot of snow tomorrow and you would think the world was ending. I waited AN HOUR in line at the supermarket this morning to pay for my groceries. And, this is New England! Snow should not be such a surprise!

Rant over...

IMO, an hour long line at the grocery is not the newscasters fault. Its the fault of the people (including you apparently since you were at the store too) who don't keep their pantry stocked so they need to run pick a few things up.

You're venting about people doing what you are doing yourself.

eta: If they hadn't warned you to go to the store and you ended up snowed in for a few days you'd be venting about them being inept.

I say that every time. This is New England..it snows. I drove past the grocery store today and the line to get in the parking lot was out onto the street. Really? Your kitchen is that lean that you couldn't survive two days without going to the store? AND we've known about it for a week.

Craziness!

I swear, when I was watching The Weather Channel last night the reporter positively beamed when she said: "and massive power outages too!"

As a friend of mine says after all the hoopla over the snowstorms: "and this report was brought to you by Stop and Shop." LOL.

I hear you. I was at Stop & Shop but even if the forecast was sunny and 65 I had to shop today. It was ugly. I didn't even buy milk, bread or eggs!

The only thing I need to get is cat food. Or I may become cat food.

The newscasters I watch actually said this morning: We're not stating this to warn you, but to make sure you're prepared.

Friday is my regular grocery shopping day so I will have to go this evening. It has NOTHING to do with the storm. You can't really stock up on milk and lunch meat etc.

We are to get 1 to 3 inches. I hope that our stores aren't crazy or cleaned out.

I usually avoid the markets when storms are predicted. Unfortunately, I can't this time. I was sick almost the entire month of January. Dh picked up produce, milk, eggs and the like. Everything else came from our cabinets and pantry. I went to get something for dh and was shocked how depleted our stock is.

We are completely out of milk. But, it's the only thing that there would be a shortage of.

I disagree. Some things can't be stocked up in huge abundance - for example milk, bread and fruit which are all consumed quickly in my household and which I don't buy huge amounts ahead of time because they will spoil and because there are only so many gallons of milk that fit in a refrigerator. If I knew there was a chance of being snowed in for 3 days, I'd be at the store buying those things even though my regular pantry is quite well stocked. It's not always about being unprepared.

Plus, I know around here when people know they are going to be stuck at home for a few days, they buy things that aren't on the normal rotation like ice cream and alcohol and junk food. I don't think it's the newscasters fault at all - they need to keep people informed and we learned from Sandy and Katrina why that job is important. But neither do I think long lines are always about people not keeping their pantry stocked.

They are wrong most of the time. They will just cast a wide net and hope they get close. They are tell us 4-12. Hard to get that wrong.

I swear the TV news people get great joy about sending people into a panic. I am sure most people can get by for 2 days without going to the store but maybe they thought well if we are going to be home why not bake cookies? Maybe they were broke and got paid today?

I ran to the store for milk just because and the store was empty.

Fortunately I can forgo my normal grocery shopping today. Won't have fresh fruits or such, but plenty to eat and the cat supplies are well stocked. Most recent prediction is 5-10: it was 1-3 or 6.

I remember several years ago when Hurricane Rita (which was same year as Katrina) was offshore in the Gulf of Mexico at a Cat 5 storm.

I went to Wal-mart, and instead of Walmart TV playing on the monitors, it was the Weather Channel. They had these monitors set up near the pallets of water and bread they had sitting out.

Here's the kicker - this is Austin, TX - 4 1/2 hours inland, and not in the direct path of anything. In fact, we did not get a drop of rain from that storm!

The funny thing is you hear here during natural disasters people complaining as to why people aren't prepared, etc. But now you are complaining for people preparing. Which one is it? Wouldn't you rather that people stock up and be prepared no matter if it happens or not?

We're in the 30+ range. Yay!

I was in Stop and Shop this morning. DH had the flu this week, and this was the first chance I've had. Slim pickings at the store, but I was out pretty early and it was still quiet.

I still think the reason the blizzard of 78 was so bad, was that people were not prepared. I think people will be leaving work early tomorrow to keep out of the rush hour blizzard conditions. So I'm perfectly content that they're publicizing it.

We call those weather reports storm porn here.

I buy Organic Valley shelf stable milk to keep in my pantry . I bake bread items ( rolls, english muffins etc) and can or freeze fresh fruit from our trees , garden and local farms.
This makes it easier to remain well stocked on items. BUT.... the peaches I canned went fast this year! LOL! so no peaches in the pantry. We will have to live without them this storm! LOL!

Normally I take the forecast with a grain of salt, but this one is different. Add in the fact that we have not had a "snow storm" in 2+ years and there is still some dealing with Sandy aftermath.

Hijack: do you think it tastes the same? I do keep a couple cases of Horizon shelf stable milk in the pantry because I send it in dd's lunch but ds refuses to drink it because he says it doesn't taste right. I haven't seen Organic Valley shelf stable milk sold around here but I might search it out if it's worth it.

Ugh in CT. I only have to go out for my moms Lotto ticket. I hate the darned Lotto anyway and to have to brave a store just for that makes me cringe. She's been playing the same numbers for 30 years and I'd better not forget to buy it! I'd better go now.. Thanks for reminding me! I'll send milk if I find any.

Boise received about 5" a couple of weeks ago and the news would come on with this dramatic tune and a big banner "Winter Storm 2013." For days!

you can freeze just about anything

keep a couple gallons in the freezer!

i also keep powdered milk (i seem to use it in my cooking and baking more than for drinking)

i also have bread in my freezer

we can live without fresh fruit and vegetables for the duration of a storm/power outage

i like to live so that if we get a surprise weather issue...i don't have to go to walmart

most storms come with enough warning that you can go out a day or two before....and really...i'd rather see long lines and depleted shelves than people without supplies

We like the Organic Valley better than Horizon. The vanilla is great cold over cereal. When the expiration date is getting close I will cook with it and have never noticed a difference.
My son won't drink ANY organic milk He says it taste like grass...LOL. So I buy him regular milk.

We don't ever have to really worry about storm prep so no words on that matter.

But this,

Hijack: do you think it tastes the same? I do keep a couple cases of Horizon shelf stable milk in the pantry

Sarah, E. refuses to drink Horizon milk, from the gallon or from the box. She loves milk and will drink it all, except for Horizon. Organic Valley is her favorite. We buy the Costco brand milk boxes, which in reality is probably just Horizon rebranded, but they both drink it.

You guys are missing a major portion of timing of this storm...sure the news stations love a good blizzard...but in FEBRUARY aka SWEEPS MONTH... you betcha they are downright gleeful.

And people naturally follow suit and go into stressed prep mode. We're just wired that way.

So do they close malls if there is a snowstorm? The reason I ask is DH and DD are heading to Skaneatles NY (SP) for a hockey tournament and are hoping to hit teh Waterloo outlets tomorrow. They left this afternoon. They should be in their hotel in Auburn before the snow hits but dd will be bummed if there is no shoopping.

We get tons of snow here but we are used to it. School buses won't run but schools are still open and everything else operates as usual. We are expecting 30 cm (12 inches)between tonight and Saturday morning. I don't know of anyone "getting prepared"

Hope all the peas stay safe and warm

Waterloo number is (315) 539-1100.

It sounds like things farther East will get more snow.

Not sure if you are using it, but the snow/traffic on the Thruway gets bad
with accumulation or blowing snow. Even the back roads get dicey.

So true! When snow is expected the news acts like it is the end of the world. We had 3 ft. of snow a few years ago. It was a surprise, only 6 was expected. But still, we were out and about in a couple of days. And it wasn't like it was expected. I could see in the south it could be a problem. But we are in PA and that is not out of the ordinary to get a lot of snow.

I think the news people like the "excitement". It seems like the more snow they predict, the less we get!

I went to the supermarket last night to get milk and eggs so I would have it for the weekend. It was empty. Today, I'm sure it's crazy! As soon as snow is finished falling around here, folks dig out and get in their SUV's and immediately head to Starbucks so I'm not sure what everyone is prepping for!

I am asking nicely though for Mother Nature to please not mess with the electricity!!

I agree!! The media turns it into a circus. Our area has been "whimpified". A trace of the white stuff sends people into a panic and they cancel school!! We live in New England folks, you should be able to handle 6 inches without skipping a beat! Even our cars are better prepared for weather than ever before! When I was a kid we drove around with chains, kitty litter and sections of chicken wire just to get up the hill near our house. It was common to lose power for a few days and we survived! Keep an eye on your neighbors in need and be prepared but no need to go nuts!

I tend to shop on Fridays because I work only a half day. But it NEVER FAILS - every time The Big One is predicted, I run into the frenzied shoppers who are buying every bottle of water, gallon of milk and loaf of bread. Seriously - that's about all they have in their baskets.

So I guess from a distance it would seem I'm in a panic as well. But in reality, I'm just doing my weekly shopping. Frustrating, for sure.

Yup, I learned to put full chains on. Unfortunately the Public Works departments do not have the equipment to deal with 12" plus of snow. We just don't get that regularly. They cannot have 100s of trucks/plows sitting and waiting for several years for it to snow that much, so it takes longer to get the roads cleared.

that stinks. But I would blame the stores, not the weathermen. They are just trying to help prepare people for what could be coming. The stores should be watching the news and expect the crowds!

Hope it's not as bad as they are predicting! It very rarely is here.

When I was a kid we drove around with chains, kitty litter and sections of chicken wire just to get up the hill near our house. It was common to lose power for a few days and we survived! Keep an eye on your neighbors in need and be prepared but no need to go nuts!
ah, I remember those days well! And dad would have us bounce up and down sometimes for extra traction (or entertainment, I'm not sure which).

We aren't getting anything, but on the rare occasion we do, the stores are crazy, but it's more of a festive type of atmosphere.

Memories.

My mom also kept a box with extra gloves and hats, a warm blanket and a candle in the car. She had been told that you could heat a car with a candle if necessary just enough to not freeze to death. She drove a VW Bug when I was little so it wasn't like we were used to a whole lot of heat as it was

In those pre-cell phone days the risk of being stranded and/or having to walk for help felt very real.

Also in pre-seatbelt days I remember on a bad drive my mother would panic and make me get down on the floor in the back seat. Again she had read that somehow that was safer. My memory of driving in bad weather is being curled up on the backseat FLOOR seeing nothing and hearing my mother curse and mutter.

i don't understand who these people are who need to be stocking up for a snow storm? we're in MI, and even in the worst blizzard of 1978 teh roads were only closed for 4 days, even in the rural areas where my parents lived. are these people really not keeping enough food in their house to last 4 days?
