She just passed away last Friday and understandably he is taking it hard, but was playing through it. The national media treats Duke with kid gloves and as if they have halos, but what are they going to say about this?
If this was the NC State crowd chanting this to a Duke player it would be national news. We will see how the mainstream media and Dick Vitale addresses this. It doesn't matte if it was one fan, 100 fans or 10000 fans. While they will spin it as a 'Past your Bedtime'Â chant that did happen, they will ignore the chant previous to that about Lewis' grandmother, which can be heard faintly in background.

Just another reason why I've hated Duke for a very long time. They suck. Very big ones.
Where is their common decency and respect? Why didn't the other fans tell them to shut the eff up?

GROSS.
I considered going to Duke when I was applying to college. I took it off my list because I thought the sports culture there was WAY out of control. And that was ... a long time ago.
That is appalling, disgusting behavior. If the coach doesn't come out and issue an apology on behalf of the fans and the team, that is a sign that he obviously doesn't care about this sort of thing. Ignoring such shamefulness will encourage it to continue. |

Student sections can be horrible and will often cross the line. A few students will google things and come up with the names of players' girlfriends and moms or other random things. They start yelling stuff and a bunch of others will join in not having a clue what 1/2 of it even means. The goalie is always dating a whore or his mother is a whore. I attend D1 hockey games and our student section got in a lot of trouble for a few chants and the national media picked up on it last year. It was in very poor taste and the university was wise to crack down on them. I did feel kind of bad for them because I know damn well that most of them weren't yelling the chant that got them in trouble. I was at the game and I sit very close to the student section. I remember turning to my husband and asking, "What are they yelling?" It wasn't until I read about it online that I figured out what they yelled.
This year's chants are very tame. No one is dating or has a mother that is a whore. In about five
years they'll cross the line again big time and all the season ticket holders will get letters of apology from the university. We've gotten a couple over the years. |

This is national news.
That is awful! I wish they could punish the kids who did it. I don't think it is a reflection of the other fans, just the ones involved. I hope the jerks that did it get what they deserve! Horrible, horrible people.
I will admit though, often the fans are what makes people dislike some teams. I don't live in my home state (Maryland), but I don't like any of the professional teams in the city where I live now because of the fans.

I am going to say it DOES matter if it's only one fan, because one person can be an effin idiot. But when more than one person does something like that it is completely and totally unacceptable and disgusting.

Although Coach K is undeniably (& unfortunately, for those of us in the same conference) one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time, I especially admire he & his wife's commitment - both time, effort, & money - to the Duke's Children's Hospital that improves the lives of hundreds of patients annually. I don't know that it's necessarily his place as the coach to address the media regarding this incident; rather, it should be the university itself.
Unfortunately, IMHO Duke University has not handled these types of situations well. Mostly notably, the administrators prematurely abandoned & severely punished the (innocent) lacrosse team. Now, the university appears to deny a chant that filled Cameron Indoor & has easily been confirmed by attendees (& probably video). Why didn't the university simply issue a statement condemning the actions of these fans? After all, everyone knows these chants aren't pre-approved & cannot be easily contained. The university didn't need to claim responsibility, just show basic decency. IMHO it seemed like an easy PR decision that they've just complicated by denial. It reflects badly on the university administrators, fans, alumni, & likely the entire conference...UGH! | |
