So my DS got braces yesterday. Neither I nor DH have had braces, so this is new to us. DS is (at least right now) super motivated to do everything right because the ortho mentioned that if he did everything he told him to do, he might not have to have them for the full two years.

DS texted me that after lunch when he was brushing his teeth, a piece of wire came out. It seems like it was extra, at the back of his mouth, not attached to any brackets. That's normal, right? It would only be an issue if the wire attached to the brackets broke or if a bracket itself came off, right? I told him that as long as it wasn't attached to a bracket, it was OK.

I'd call the ortho, but I've already called them once today and I don't want to seem like crazy mom this early into the process!

I wouldn't expect a piece of wire to just come out. It had to be attached to something - the orthodontist isn't going to just leave a piece in there. And if by chance a piece did get left in there, it would have come out after brushing before bed or at least in the morning.

Doesn't sound normal at all. All the wires are attached to something. He probably broke the wire near the back of his mouth and he pulled it out from the end.

My daughter broke a wire during the weekend and I pulled it out that way, so it wasn't flopping around in her mouth until Monday. It was pretty easy to pull out that way if it's broken.

DD had braces for 4 years. My recommendation is to call the Orthodontist. I know DD's Ortho never left any "spare" wires in her mouth. It was attached to something or served some purpose, and DD had a lot of hardware in her mouth.

I had braces and both my kids; that is not normal. Call the ortho.

Yep call the ortho no extra wire should be floating around and be careful because my son ended up with a hole in his cheek because a small piece of wire had come out of a bracket and we couldn't get in until after the weekend. As the teeth shift the wire can come undone

My DS just got braces yesterday & is in so much pain/discomfort.

I would definitely call the ortho and ask. Better safe than sorry especially going into the weekend.

It happens. They'll squeeze him in and fix/replace the wire.

Grab the kid some wax, getting poked by that darn wire hurts! Oh man, poor kid. I don't miss my braces!

How big is the piece of wire? When they put the wire on the brackets they snip off the extra length at the back. (usually about 1/4" or so) I bet that's what it is.

Me and my husband both had braces and my 15 year old has them now. Orthodontist will not just leave extra wire in his mouth. Call the ortho. Use some wax if he has any wire poking him.

Can I be all tacky and ask (ballpark) how much his braces are costing you? I took DS in for a consult and was quoted $10,000. He wants to do braces, the palate expanders, then braces again.

The price, and the process seem ridiculous to me! But he inherited my super narrow jaw and his teeth are stacked behind each other.

I'm too chicken to go elsewhere for another consult for fear I will find out this guy wasn't nuts and that's really what it's going to take. I'm hiding my head in the sand and being in denial for now

It's going to be about $6k for the braces, the palate expander, everything. We paid $199 for the first visit (once we decided to pursue treatment; if we had decided not to do it, the consult was at no cost), $199 for the visit when he got the braces, and then they'll draft $199 a month from our checking account for 28 months. They also provided a Water Pik for him, and he gets a free portrait session with a local photographer once he's done with everything. Our insurance will pay $1k for orthodontics, but they reimburse us directly.

That's what it was. The piece that came off wasn't big at all.

My DD has had braces almost four yrs! She was constantly breaking brackets and wires! You will have to take him in to get it fixed, it can poke/cut into his mouth! Make sure you get extra wax!

You might ask around to any friends you have who have had kids in braces and find another ortho to do a consult with. All the ones I know do the first consult visit for free. It gives you a chance to check out the office and see how they do with your child, as well as, hear what the plan for the teeth is.

The second one we visited had a slightly lower price and gave some credit for the 1st stage (palate expander) towards the second phase, had a sibling discount (both of my kids were referred on the same day even though they are 3 years apart in age), and the office staff was much nicer and joked with the kids, etc. We knew others who had had good results with both ortho offices so went with the less expensive and more fun one. It made the visits a lot less worrisome for the kids. We were really happy with our choice and it was also nice to know that both doctors had similar plans for how to correct the teeth.
