I'm still using quicken 2000 and need something that works better. For one thing, this will only backup to a floppy or cd/dvd and I want to back it up to my HD. I am sure I've done it in the past but it won't anymore. The new versions of quicken have terrible reviews at amazon so maybe it's time to switch to a different company. I need something to keep track of farm expenses and such (so I have to be able to organize expenses into different categories). Any suggestions?

I use quicken but not a version that old. I upgrade every 3 years. I read some reviews before my last upgrade but upgraded anyway. I'm not sure why everyone was complaining. I like it fine. What I would ask about now though is if a file from 2000 can be converted to 2013.

As far as backups, I have my EHD backing up my quicken file everytime it is updated. I then backup to a flash drive or DVD periodically.

I have the new quicken and like it. I was using last years. Most of the bad reviews were from when they first introduced the app. I read it had a lot of problems but they have been fixed. I've been happy with it. I haven't started my budget yet but everything I've read said that the budget portion is much better from last year's program.
Our Costco has a coupon good until the 24th, for $20 off which makes it under $30. The free programs that I've found don't do what I want and the apps are more expensive and don't do everything that Quicken does.
All that being said I know lots of DR people like You Need a Budget (YNA.

Maybe I should just stick with Quicken then. I'm not too worried about transferring over. I mainly just enter our tax related info (income and expenses) divided into categories, and then fill out the packet the accountant sends us. I don't use it for balancing our checkbook or anything like that. Thanks for the info!

I'm not a Dave Ramsey person but I do love YNAB. I'm still on the free trial, but in a few days I will pay for the full version.

It has categories and everything I need.

I've been using Mint.com for a couple of years. It's all online and I love it.

We use Quicken and just upgraded. I read the bad reviews and wondered what the deal was too but I haven't found anything that really bothers me yet. I don't like the cloud apps like mint and others because I think it provides makes the opportunities for scamming and identity theft greater.

I use quickbooks, but I am accountant by training and it just seems more logical to be able to make my entries like the way my mind works.

I'm another who is not a fan of cloud based software to store financial information for reasons of security and privacy.

I use YNAB for budgeting and tracking spending. I like it a lot.

I have grown to hate Quicken, but I still use it for tracking investments, assets, etc.. I would be very happy if I never had to use it again.

Mint.com

I've used it for a few years, but really really started getting into it in January. I'm like obsessed with our finances right now and check mint multiple times a day. They have an app too.

We're using Quicken 2012. The only thing I really hate about it is there is an extra click to clear a transaction while you are entering it. (I don't enter items daily. Once a week I update from my checking account and clear (c) them at that time.)

For one thing, this will only backup to a floppy or cd/dvd and I want to back it up to my HD.

My Mom is using Quicken 96 or 98 and she can't even back up, her's is asking for a 3.5" floppy and her computer doesn't have one. I've tried, HD, CD and USB with no luck. I'm going to have to upgrade her, but then the changes might put her over the edge.

I bit on an upgrade to the new Quicken 2013 Basic the other day - only to discover (thankfully in the installation process) that the Basic will not transfer previous Quicken information. Since I've been using Quicken for nearly 20 years, that was really frustrating and so I requested a refund. I'm struggling because I do need to upgrade my Quicken program, but the fact that they were willing to treat their existing customers that way makes me angry and not all that excited about continuing to use the Quicken product.

However, I'm wary of Mint as I don't want my info in the cloud.

The Quicken versions are the Starter edition, the Deluxe edition, the Premier edition and the Home & Business edition. It sounds like you had the Started edition. This is also the version that is sometimes preinstalled on computers. I found a couple of computers ago that they do not allow you to import your existing Quicken data into the Starter version. I initially thought I was going to get a new version of Quicken without having to buy it separately only to find that my data wouldn't import. So, this is not a new thing to not allow imports of data into the Starter edition. It has been this way for a number of years. On the good side, there is almost always at least $20 off the Deluxe edition that is available to reduce the price.

Same here. And also like it a lot. I've been using it for probably four years. Try the free trial.

We are a little more than half way through our YNAB trial. It is completely changing our relationship with money, and I wish I would have bought it years ago.

I highly recommend it!
