My friend's niece had natural occurring quads too with a 2 year old at home. She had 3 girls and one boy but I don't have a clue if they're identical or what.

I saw that her husband said they weren't done yet. He still wants a little girl. Seriously?!

I'd kick him in the balls. 5 boys under 3? That Mom has a reserved place in Heaven. LOL

I noticed they were born a bit early, 31 weeks I think. I hope they are all healthy.

Where is marymary with her knitted uterus?

Maybe the dad will get some "alone-time" with his 4 little boys so mama can rest.

So she has 2 sets of twins separate? Or 4 babies at once containing 2 sets of identicals?

I saw that yesterday. Can't imagine!! I also can't imagine trying for a girl after that..

I did think it was a little odd that the article I read mentioned about the whole very rare without fertility drugs thing. It would also be very rare with the use of fertility treatments.

It is rare period. Fertility stuff doesn't make identical twins, just fraternal ones more common. At least that is what my friend who is a Reproductive Endocrinologist says.

Only the girls could be identical

Fertility treatments make multiples, but not identical. Identically are just by luck!

Poor woman! I cannot imagine!

Now, it is impossible for boy/girl multiples to be identical. It is also extremely rare since identicals are not something that runs in families.

Fraternal multiples are what is hereditary...when the mother drops multiple eggs. And it does not skip generations. The only time it appears to is when the multiples are male and there are no females. Since males pass the gene NOT the eggs, obviously it will appear to skip.

Actually identicals run in our family. We have many sets--my mom is an identical twin, I have identical triplets, and there are many more sets. Mom miscarried her multiples. My sister is one of the only ones to have fraternal twins (boy/girl), and I am the only one with triplets.

When hubby and I were talking about having kiddos, my doctor told me that my chances of having multiples was very slim because "identicals don't run in families." Then when found out at 15 weeks that I was expecting triplets (and consequently found out they were identical), she said "oh it was your family history that caused this." LOL! Mom just calls us all "fertile myrtles." I got pregnant within 2 months of deciding we wanted to "try for A baby." Eeek!

My sister went to school with triplet girls who were actually a set of identical girls and then another girl. The "odd" one out, for lack of a better term, had a hard time. She had the bond of being a triplet, yet was often considered not one of the "twins".

I'm a mom of 2 girls and fraternal boy twins. Interestingly, the twin thing can pass on to the girls. It is funny all of the wives tales of twins and how it gets passed on or not. My DH has a number of sets of twins on his side of the family, one set identical, and I literally get dirty looks when I say that DH actually had nothing to do with it!

Crazy, right?

I am aware of a set of identical triplets and have seen a set of identical twins in a triplet pregnancy. I am pretty sure there was a set of identical quads in the last 10 yrs too.

I am also from one of those weird families where identical twinning seems to be hereditary on my mom's side. My mom had 2 sets but I am the sole survivor. She had 2 sets of 1st cousins who are identical. My 1st cousin(mom's sister's daughter) has a set of identicals. Actually, come to think of it, we ONLY have identical twins on that side of the family.

I know someone who had quads...three of them were identical. No fertility drugs were involved at all.

I love stories like that!

Stories like this make me glad I'm done having kids.

I cannot imagine thinking you are going from 1 child to 2 and then finding out you are going from 1 to 5!!!

And since there was no fertility issues involved at all, this was a huge shock. It wasn't a situation where they knew they might have multiples.

They only expected to be adding 1 kid and got 4. Aaaack!!!

WOW. Yeah, I agree her husband needs some alone time with his 5 boys. I can't believe he actually alluded to wanting more children.

There are a set of identical quads here in my area. The parents seem to be awesome from what I have seen and heard of them. Of course, they were shocked at first, but quickly adjusted and embraced it. They didn't have any children before or after them though.

I imagine these parents are going to have a rough few years at first, and then again with all those teenagers

Just a funny side, when people asked if my boy/girl twins were identical I always replied with "her penis is bigger!"

This happened locally. I can't even imagine that many babies at once.

If you read the comments under the article, it appears the father has a 6th son with another woman! I would say his odds of having a girl after 6 boys is rather slim!

Lots of identical twinning in my family too. They can say that it's not hereditary, but the reality is that you do see families who have statistically more than their share of identical twins. We also have quite a few singletons with organs on the reverse side (heart on the right, etc) which is often considered to be the result of a monozygotic twin pregnancy in which one twin did not survive, but the mirror image twin does. Kind of interesting and weird.

That said, as the mom of 4 boys (one pair of identical twins) in 5 years, I can't imagine having 5 boys in 2 1/2. Busy days ahead for them.

I would think most men would be thrilled to have 5 boys! Why would he even want to think about another? It's easy for him now because they are still in the hospital. Wait until they all come home, then he may be rethinking. I can't imagine having 5 teen boys at the same time. Hard enough keeping the girls away from one boy much less that many. The poor parents.

Identical twins "run" in my family too. My dads sister's are identical and my paternal great aunt has 4 sets of grandchildren so 8 children out of 15 grand children are identical (she had a set as well).

When my DD18 was a baby there were a set of natural quads in our town the same age as her. It was her fourth pregnancy (she already had three kids - 6, 4 and 2 when the quads were born) The mom was always out and about with them and we used to meet her often - she was lucky she had her mom with her a lot of the time, and they walked everywhere with two double strollers, with the two year old walking alongside!
We have long since moved away but as they are nearing college age I wonder how they all are.

Also a mom at our current school has six year old boy/girl twins and four year old triplets (all natural). The triplets are identical girls and the third triplet is a boy. Unfortunately he had a very difficult time in-utero and has brain damage. They are a lovely lovely family, can't imagine what it was like for them in those early days with five children under two, one of whom had severe problems.

I have a friend who is one of a set of triplets--her two sisters are identical, and she is the fraternal.

I have another friend who has a set of triplets with two identical and one fraternal.

My step-niece who is a fraternal twin has identical twin daughters. There is definitely an inherited gene somewhere!

With identical triplets does the (zygote?) embryo split into three or does it split into four and only three survive?

I had three in seven years and nearly lost my mind. I can't imagine two or three or four at once!
