Coming off my first week back at work. This is going to be tricky. Thank goodness for the treadmill. Hubby being a driller and working away combined with zero family nearby to rely on as occasional babysitters is making the dreadmill a necessity.
We're getting an actual snow storm here today... at least by Calgary standards. This Maritimer is used to shovelling out the neighbors back home because the drifts were up higher than their doors. I'm hoping to get out and do a road/side walk run in a bit. I love running in the fresh snow. It's the hardpacked ice we'll have in a few days I'm not fond of.

I've completed 6.2 miles a few times now, and it's a pretty great feeling to go farther (however slowly) than I thought I could. So anyone lurking or just getting started, stick with it. No races coming up here until I find out if hubby is in town for St Patricks day. I have a Nike virtual 10k next weekend.

How are you all doing?

Great! First 5k of the season in the books. Beat my last year time from the same race by 4 minutes! Plus I won a jacket and gift certificate for being the first person to sign up when the email came out. Hey, I forget stuff if I don't act on it right away! Lol

My race times were much more accurate with my iPhone in my hand rather than on my arm so I'll be looking for a wrist strap thing next.

Still upping my speed a bit this week. Going to aim for 16 miles this week.

I did 5 yesterday and this morning I ran to my moms, shoveled her driveway, and ran back for 8 miles total. I felt very hard core but I'll probably be sore tomorrow and then, not so much. I got a pair of thermal tights yesterday at 50% off (yea) and I love them! My legs were toasty and very happy!

I ran in a local 10K yesterday. By FL standards it was cold at the start (around 40 degrees), and I don't know if it was being cold or what, but I PR'd my mile time, my 5K time, and I PR'd my 10K by 8 minutes. When I started half training last November I was maintaining about a 12 minute mile pace--yesterday I stayed between 10 and 10:45 the whole time. I was thrilled!

No race planned yet for April, but I want to find one. I do have a CrossFit competition, so I'm going to the box 3 times a week instead of 2. I'll need to find a 5K to keep things simpler.

kayak, I'm no fan of the dreadmill either! Dreading the super hot summer months that may send me inside more than I'd like.

amythyst, congratulations on your time and your winnings!

Congrats on the big PRs, amythyst and Littlefish!

What brand are the thermals, plateful? I need some warmer options.

I'm just getting back into it after being off for most of Nov - Feb with a foot issue and with the fact that I don't like running in the cold and dark. I don't have a treadmill, nor do I really want one - we don't have any room for one and there's only a few months of the year I'd use it....

So today was mild 4C and I went for 30 minutes - in 10 minute job, 1 min walk intervals. Although I'm just getting back into shape, this is the way I always run, even when my 10 minute intervals take me much further than they did today.

I haven't decided if I'll run the half marathon I'm signed up for on May 20th but at this point my foot feels good so I'm hoping I've gotten the issue fixed.

3 miles on the dreadmill. I have made several new playlists so that is giving me some motivation. I also try to beat DH by *this much* each run, so that makes it interesting. I've been increasing my speed each time, usually about 1/2 mile to go, then a 1/4 mile. I'm trying to finish strong!

I ran 10 miles at the park trails today. It was a gorgeous day here! I have a half-marathon on Saturday. Last year, I PR'd it, finishing in just under 2 hours. I'm hoping to keep up with the 1:45 pace group this year.

I did a half marathon today... finished faster than I did on the same course 2 years ago, but slower than my last half mary in October. Which is fine, because I find running consistently through the winter to be a real struggle! The only real point of signing up for this race is to keep me active when there's snow on the ground and I'd rather just stay in bed!

Tomorrow will definitely be a rest day. I am SORE.

I did 11 miles yesterday so today was a much needed rest day. I usually don't feel sore till the next morning when getting out of bed. I need to either ice/stretch after my runs, just don't know how and what to do, so any ideas?

When I do a lengthy run (for me, more than 12 miles), I wear my compression socks as soon as possible and for as long as possible. I will come in from the run, shower and put on the socks and wear them all day, sometimes while I'm sleeping. I'm almost never sore the next day. On my last half-marathon, I wore compression calf sleeves during the run and I wasn't sore at all the next day.

Thanks, pretzels! Going to the store tomorrow to look for some.

DId not want to run today, just wasn't in the mood, but I knew if I didn't I would be mad at myself. Plus, I had no excuses not too.

Anyways, it was not a great run, just okay. The first 2 miles were slow but I did get better at the last 2. At least its done

I did a pretty slow 4 miles on the treadmill after a pretty crazy workout with a friend. It served to remind me there are lots of different levels of being 'fit'.

11kms for me today.

Couldn't figure out why I felt sluggish then about 5kms in I remembered that I donated blood on Friday. Ya, that will make me feel sluggish! Oops!

Beautiful day to be outside though. Right at the freezing level but beautiful clear blue skies. Perfect running weather.

Hi Ladies,

Congrats to all who are getting out there day in and day out no matter the distance. I know how exciting it is to go a little bit further every time....slow and steady, gradually, our endurance increases.

I ran 5 Saturday with our USA Fit Shreveport training group. We met afterwards at a cafe to plan our end of season party/celebration. Should be good fun to gather everyone (about 100 of us) for a final fellowship and sharing of war stories from our goal race we completed this year.

Let me see if I can post a pic of our Yellow marathon training group the day before Cowtown marathon. We were so excited and just acting goofy...

On a more serious note, I am scheduled for a bilateral mastectomy on March 19th. Reconstructive surgery will begin during that surgery. I'll be off work for at least 7-10 days. Fortunately I have a light duty job so hopefully I'll be ready to get back to work since I don't know yet if I'll be facing radiation/chemo following surgery. I need to save all my paid leave for that as I understand chemo will either be 6 or 8 cycles spread 3 weeks apart and may need to take a week off during each of those depending upon how ill it makes me. Please continue the prayers. I am doing remarkably well although I still have my moments. Life is good. God is a miracle worker, already workind miracles in my life. I will beat this.

Take care all, Melissa

Melissa, wishing you well with your surgery, and hoping for the best outcome for you. You are strong and brave, you will beat this x. Prayers and positive thoughts continue to be sent from Florida

Congrats to all the racers and those getting PRs this weekend

So not feeling the running vibe this week But I made myself go out and I ran 3.28 miles (gotta love my GPS and its precision ) And it didn't feel bad either. I checked back, and I'd actually ran 3 mins faster than any of my previous runs of that length. So actually feeling pretty good now
I found a 10k to run in April, so I am definitely signing up for it. I really wimped out on the 15k, but I think I knew that it was pushing it a bit far, too quickly. I always have next year

Question about running shoes - how often do you buy new shoes? I got mine in September, and noticed today that the tread is starting to wear down. They are still comfortable, but just wondering if people put a mileage limit or time limit on their training shoes

Thanks for the update Melissa. Continued prayers as your treatment begins!

On the CrossFit side of things for me, this is the last day of our 30 Day Paleo Challenge. I'm very proud that I didn't cheat once! I'm down around 4-5 pounds and definitely have seen some positive effects. I'll take about a week "off" then go back to an 80/20 balance so I can still enjoy some of the better things in life...like cheese and chocolate!

We did a benchmark WOD at the beginning of the challenge...one of the infamous "Dirty Girls" called Fran. Fran is 21-15-9 reps of thrusters (full front squat followed immediately by an overhead press) and pull-ups. The first time we did Fran a month ago, I finished in 10:30. Last night? 8:16. I nearly cried.

So between Fran and my 10K, I had 4 PR's in 3 days. I can totally deal with that.

Props to everyone getting their distances in! And congrats C3PeaO on your race!

Melissa, you are in my prayers. I had a friend just go through this exact same thing in November. She has done amazingly well. I wish the same recovery for you. I hope the fact that you are so fit will help to work wonders for you.

Sarah, the people at the running store have told me rule of thumb is 500 miles for the shoes. I can usually tell if mine wear out sooner because my knees or hips start to ache when I am running.

I PR'd this weekend on a 5k. I had a time of 33:28 a 40 second improvement. I am trying to increase to a 10k now.

30 minutes on the treadmill. I am getting closer to my 10 minute/mile mark. Not fast by some standards, but a lot faster than the 14 minute time a year ago.

I go 300 miles or three months for shoes. If it's 300 miles/three months and I have a race coming up, I won't switch until after the race.

The running store put me in Brooks Ravenna 3s. They're going on sale everywhere because the 4s just came out, so I'm hoarding all the women's size 7s I find.

5 miles for me tonight. It was long and tough, my legs were like lead!!! I really need to start incorporate more stretching into my day to help keep my muscles more loose.

I'm getting excited because the Ragnar plans are underway. I have a meeting with our team (Dude! Where's my Van?) on Sat. This is something so different than I've ever done that I'm really looking forward to it!

I ran a 3 mi tempo run and bought new shoes today. I put 400 miles on each pair.
I have a 5 mile race on Sunday and then a half two weeks after that and I've decided to run a marathon on Memorial Day. I only have 12 weeks so I'm just aiming to finish this one.

Nice to see the update, Melissa. Stay strong.

We are finally back from our trip and I'm officially a MARATHONER! Woohoo! The hills in Little Rock were ROUGH, but they sure do know how to put on a race, and of course, the medal is just ridiculous. I'm going to put it in a shadowbox with my race bib and a picture from that day, because I'm afraid it'll break my medal hanger thing. (For those that don't know, the LR Marathon has the biggest medal in the world. This year, it was 8" wide and weighs more than two pounds.)

For my fellow slower runners, this is a slow-runner-friendly race: they have an early start for the marathoners only, two hours before the regular start, if you think you'll take six hours or longer. I was in ninth place for the first few miles, LOL! I figured it would be the only time that I'd ever be right behind the flashing blue lights of the police motorcycles at the front of the pack, so I might as well take advantage of it. We also got to see the elites up close as they zoomed past us at about the mile 15 mark while those of us in the "lead" were walking up a massive hill. Amazing!

My main goal was just to finish, but I also wanted to finish in six hours. (My half marathon time a few months ago was 3:13, on a course with baby rolling hills, that were basically speed bumps compared to Little Rock.) I finished in 6:03 and my half marathon split was less than 3 hours, which I know is crazy slow compared to a lot of you, but I'm SO proud of it, especially after giving birth to my fourth child a little over a year ago and becoming a runner for the first time after that.

They also had pace groups all the way up to an 8 hour marathon. The aid stations were manned with tons of people, and had tons of goodies, and the course entertainment was great as well. I cannot say enough good things about this race, especially for those of us who are slower.

Now to head back upthread and read about everyone else!

Awesome job on the marathon, jjulee! That is so cool and what an accomplishment

Today I did 4 miles in the hot sun and it was okay but the real problem was my running shorts kept sliding off! It was so annoying so that run felt like it lasted forever. At least it's done and over with.

Hi Ladies,

Looks like you're all rocking along making plans, running, getting over injuries slowly but surely.

I wear shoes anywhere from 300-500 miles before retiring them.

I've frustratingly been unable to run all week due to an upper respiratory infection that hasn't relented despite starting a 2nd roundof antibiotics this past Monday. Today I feel the best I have since Sunday. So I believe I'm on the mend.

Tomorrow planning 6 miles with my running group SMR.

And I have a date with a friend I met through Christian Mingle. It'll be our 2nd date actually and I'm very excited. He is a short distance runner and wants to get fitted for a new pair of shoes at our local specialty running store Excited to spend the day with him.

I'm still coping very well with facing the bilateral mastectomy on 3/19. Surgery recovery will be a challenge but I'm hopeful that my level of fitness will make recovery easier than for the average Joe. And also my tolerance for pain as a marathon runner is probably greater than that for the average Joe as well. Not much of a quitter and that characteristic in addition to my unwavering faith in God carrying me through this trial/tribulation will carry me far. Thank you all for the continued support and prayers and caring.

Get your run on this weekend and may you all have a blessed day. Melissa

Last sunday I did the half at little rock, where jjjulee did her full. And I totally would repeat everything she said, it's a really great run. The crowd support and entertainment was so cool. It was my first half and as much as I know I should've been just concentrating on finishing I still had a time goal and that was to be under 3 hours. We got in at 2:57 whoo hooo, would've been 2:54 something but my friend had to stop twice to pull off stuff on the bottom of her feet inside her shoe. I already bought and downloaded the professional pics, I was surprised how many there were for me. I bought a long sleeve finisher shirt the day before at the expo and a short sleeve shirt that says Thirteen Point Freaking One. Can't wait to wear that one because its a family joke about me getting in trouble for using the word freakin' by a family friend when her same age child used the actuall F word.

I'm still thinking about signing up for the Lincoln Presidential half since it's local to me and its four weeks away. Otherwise after that I'll probably go back to just 5k's and get my per mile time back down a little.

Good morning everyone!!

I'm finally going out for a run with my running group. 6-8 miles. This cold is on its way out. Just have a bit of a runny nose and a little bit of a cough still. No fever. And ready to run.

So fun yesterday at work--my co-workers about 25 people gave me a "pink party". They all wore pink and had lunch catered in to celebrate me. How loved I feel. Some people even had the day off and came in for the party anyway. A couple of other folks work at a different facility and drove over to be a part of it as well. Most of these people I've known for the entired 15 years I've worked at the hospital I'm at. Even our director wore a pink tie yesterday. So very kind. Never befoe have I realized how valuable I am to those with whom I come in contact everyday. My cup runneth over.

May you all have a wonderful workout, or rest day, or recovery day. And for those of you who are running, please give us a race report when you return from your adventure.

Take care, Melissa

I'm about to head out to run The Gusher Half Marathon here in my city. There's a 5K and a marathon; my younger brother is running the marathon. I've run this race every year, so it's more of a fun thing for me.

Haven't read all the pp yet, but I'm hoping everyone had a great week.
Got my miles in so far, and gearing up for my Nike Womens Marathon Virtual 10K tomorrow. That's quite a handle 'eh? lol. Should be fun.
I recall someone asking what a virtual race is. It's basically one run by anyone anywhere on a specific day/time. This one, NWM10K is a bit of a promotion for the Nike Womens Marathon and half. I hope to receive my shirt next week and wear it proudly. I can't believe it'll be my third time doing 10kms. I'm still incredibly slow, but I never imagined being able to run 10k (with walking breaks of course).

Sending out positive thoughts for everyone to have a great run this weekend.
