That photo looks amazing, especially with the hardwood floors. But one thing about painting the doors black is that you can't easily paint over them. If you change your mind down the road, you will probably have to buy new doors.

I think it looks pretty cool but only if you have good doors. These are unusual doors so I think it works. If your doors are just regular and not a little bit interesting, I am not sure the effect will be as good.

Doors and trim in semi-gloss. Easier to clean and keep clean. You don't have to do anything, but if I were painting my doors, I'd paint both sides. I'd also rent a sprayer or take the doors in to be sprayed. It's a much better finish and you'd be surprised how inexpensive it is.

Semi-gloss on trim. Always. If you don't want to spray use a foam roller. I did cabinets that way years ago and the finish was so smooth it was assumed to be sprayed.

I love the look. I have red oak woodwork. Everyone raves about original wood finish but let me tell you all colors look good with white

If you don't like the color you can paint over them just as you would any color.

I'm trying to picture that hallway without the lovely 15 light door and the transom overhead and it doesn't look as good in my mind. I think if you were to do this in a low light situation it would really be just too dark.
The panels on the doors also add quite a bit to the look, if they were just flat doors with no panels, I'd say don't do it.

IMHO dark painted doors only work in business/homes, especially hallways, as in the photo, with an abundance of natural light. French doors, detailed doors, transoms, etc. cause the space to feel dramatic & interesting, rather than dark & creepy. You do not have to paint the entire door the same color (e.g. our front entry door has a black exterior & white interior/top/bottom/sides). I would speak with a painting specialist at Sherwin-Williams regarding the exact black color & finish to coordinate with your wall color, door material, etc. & achieve the desired look. HTH.

I painted the interior of my front door black, but not all of them. Although, I love the picture you posted...

I only painted my front door because our entry way has 3 doors (two coat closets) and several people would bounce back and forth between them trying to figure out which one went outside. Now that it is a different color, we no longer have that problem.

The only thing I don't like about it is that I wish I had gone with a glossier finish.

We have three doors to outside, front door, back door, and side door off the dining room, that are all painted black inside and out to match the black trim on our house. They all have a large glass panel so the doors are pretty much glass so we don't see much black, but it is still sharp looking. I love it. Ours are gloss.

Our window frames are dark dark brown. Our 4 oversized sliding doors are done in this color, plus all of our window frames inside and out. I find this kind of dark. When we put our white shutters on the sliding doors - the majority of our windows are not covered - the rooms looked fresher and bigger.

My sister painted her interior doors black in her La Jolla home.
It looked so much better than the white.
Semi gloss is good, but I love high gloss doors

I'm planning on doing this in my new house. They'll be high-gloss black on both sides. I'm going to do my trim a light putty color though because I don't like the strong contrast between black and white.

I think the look is stunning, but I agree you need a lot of light coming in to pull it off and not have it look bleakly Victorian.

I actually have very dark wood doors (not black, but similar effect), white trim, and the darker taupe walls (creamy yellow in a couple of rooms). Very similar to the picture. Both sides of the doors are the same color for the interior doors. They are paneled, not slab, and yes, I think slab doors would not look good this way, but I don't like slab doors at all in any color, so take that fwiw.

My front door is the very dark stained wood inside, but cream outside to match the exterior trim color scheme. So it's fine if you need to have different colors on different sides. I wouldn't do that on interior doors, though.

thanks for all the opinions

i have an 'open of concept' layout...plenty of light - two french doors as a matter of fact

the open area is very light and airy

my doors are also paneled

i think i am going to give it a whirl....

and of course i'll post photos...eventually!

I love the look and have been wanting to do this since I saw it on the House of Smith's blog.

But the inside of my front door is immediately next to (at a 90 degree angle) my coat closet and I thought it would look weird to have two black doors right next to each other, and/or one black and one white next to each other, so I've left them white.

I'm still thinking about it with my side/kitchen door.

Good luck!

Yes, I painted all my interior doors black and I love it!! It makes a huge difference!

I used a semi gloss.. I'm pretty sure it was a Martha Stewart Black Silhouette matched into the Behr Premium Plus Ultra. I painted both sides of the doors except on the hall closet and my walk in. ( although I still might) We were painting 11 doors when my son and I did this project..I didn't want to push my luck by insisting on painting the inside of the closet! LOL

I also left the trim white. The one thing to get used to at first is to remember to put your hand out so you don't walk into a door at night!

I think it's fine for both sides of the door to be different colors in a case like that, where the door trim is a different color than the door.

I know of a door at someone's house that is stained wood with wood trim on one side and white on the other side, and so they chose to leave the wood "inside" the door frame the wood. So it "matches" the one side of the door, but not the other. That would drive me nuts.

But if the trim is a different color than either side of the door, the problem is gone.

Or say if the other sides of the doors were white in the picture in the OP.

I have no idea if that made any sense, so I'll just simplify and say I love the look shown in the photo in the OP.

ITA Paneled doors in a well-lit situation would look awesome, IMO.

We'll be painting our doors black, so I can't wait to see yours. Our walls are also Tobacco Road and we'll be putting in a hand scrapped laminate flooring in a darker cherry/walnut color. The trim will all be white. We also have an open floor plan with lots of light so I'm not too concerned about that and when we do it, we'll do both sides...

i don't want to do both sides in my room especially...there is no black in my room at all...it's blue and brown

i may go ahead an do my daughter's room on both sides..her room is gray/black and plum

the laundry will be turquoise and white...and no one is ever in that room with the door closed...it can stay white

hell...i don't know

i'll paint the outsides of the doors and decide from there

I love the look, especially with all the trim being white. However, I think it is very trendy, and my husband would have a COW if I did that. LOL

Last winter, I painted the inside of my front door cranberry red. I did it while he was on a business trip. LOL He does like it, but at first, he was like "what the f did you do that for??"

That all said, if you love the look of black doors and want to do it...go for it! And post pictures when you are finished.

Front door was painted black in our last home. It looked lovely - it was an old solid wood door with a brass mail slot and a nice brass knocker on the outside.

In this home we painted the interior of the door a navy blue. It looks great with our buff coloured walls and white trim.

I love colourful interior doors!

Wade and I painted our upstairs doors a few weekends ago. We love the way they turned out and now if we could only decide what color to paint the walls, it would be complete.

Here's our laundry room door. We only painted the outside. We used Valspar Ultra in Dark Kettle Black (eggshell). Don't use eggshell. If I could do it over, I wouldn't again.

I couldn't get a good picture of the hall doors. There is not a lot of light in our upstairs hall and I do keep all the doors closed but, I am weird and I love it anyway!

We will be painting the downstairs interior doors soon.

Oh, I know. I wasn't trying to be snotty or anything. Some things are easier to change than others...I do love the look of black doors, but if they ever went "out" I'd probably have to get all new ones because they would be a pita to paint over.
