Dh and I are trying to add more seeds to our diet. Do you just sprinkle them on salad or mix them in salad dressing. I read somewhere that you can throw chia seeds into soup?
Looking for ideas...

Flax seed are not useful in their seed form. You need to grind them up, or buy them ground. I buy the whole seeds and use a coffee grinder to turn them into a fine powder....which you should store in the freezer.
I sprinkle it on yogurt and salads, dump it into spaghetti sauce, stews, soups, ....just about anything.
Same with chia seeds | |

I put ground flax in my oatmeal in mornings. DH is not into it, but I sneak it in things like cookies, waffles, apple crisp, and the like.
(you can substitute 1T ground flax and 3T water for one egg)
I don't know anything about chia.

I put flax seed meal in my oatmeal and smoothies, and chia seeds in my oatmeal. You have to let the chia seeds sit in the oatmeal for a few minutes so they get puffy (for lack of a better word) and soft. I like the taste the chia seeds give my oatmeal.

I add flax and chia to oatmeal and yogurt as well as smoothies. I used chia in place of an egg in a muffin recipe and it was fine. I also put flax in muffins and meatloaf.
At the health food store I talked To a lady who was buying flax and chia and a bunch of other bulk items to out in bread. She said she doesn't have a recipe but it would be nice to have one. |

I'm looking at adding the seeds, I already know how to add the ground up versions.
But I like seeds in my food and figured this was a way. I think I'll try an oatmeal cookie with chia and flax seeds. |

If you are new to flax seeds you may want to take it slow at first. Too many can really do a number on your stomach. I'm not a daily user, and last month I ate more than two tablespoons in one day. I was in pain for three days afterward. The first day after was awful.
Flax seeds are great, but be careful and ease your body into it. |

Thanks for the tips on using flax seeds (ground). I had seen a recipe for a smoothie that called for the addition of flax seed, so I bought some at the grocery store. I would have to drink a lot of smoothies to get through that whole box, so I am appreciative that some of you have shared recipes and ideas. I also added some (1 Tbls.) to my oatmeal this morning. I haven't used it every day, so I also appreciate the tip regarding taking it slow.
If anyone else has any tips regarding the use of flax seed, like how much and how often, or if anyone knows of a good online resource for information, could you please share. Thanks.

I make these muffins with some exceptions. I will put my changes next to the original ingredient. I have also done other variations like blueberry with cinnamon instead of pumpkin pie spice or cranberry apple with cinnamon.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened *I use 1/4 c butter and 1/4 c applesauce
1/2 cup brown sugar, or to taste
2 large bananas, mashed
1 (4.5 ounce) jar baby food squash *you could also use zucchini or sweet potato puree
2 carrots, grated *I use carrot, zucchini or sweet potato puree instead
2 eggs, beaten *last time I used one egg and then used chia mixed with water to substitute the other egg
1 cup all-purpose flour *I use whole wheat
1/2 cup oat bran *I use 1/4 c flax meal and 1/4 c wheat germ; could probably just use flax if you wanted
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions:
1. Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease 24 mini muffin cups or 12 standard muffin cups.
2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Mix in the mashed bananas, squash, carrots, and eggs. Stir in the flour, oat bran, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice, and salt until just combined. Spoon the batter equally into the prepared muffin cups.
3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack. Store at room temperature for up to two days, or freeze.

As for using whole flax seeds--I thought your body would just push it out and they wouldn't be digested. Does eating them whole make you "go" better than eating them ground? Or would that be the same? I want the benefits of digesting them but may add whole seeds if there would be some help with reducing constipation by doing so.

I've been eating chia seeds every single day for 3.5 years.
I put two tablespoons in my 32 oz drink in the morning. It sits for about 15 minutes then I drink it over the next hour or two
I also put them in yogurt, smoothies, jello, dressings, and anything else liquid-y
As for flax seed... I love the stuff, but you don't get the health benefits if you're eating them whole. They need to be ground to get the benefits
I add ground flax seed to every salad I make. I also add it to lasagna, eggs, smoothies, and sprinkled on top of almost every dinner I make. They add no flavor so my picky family doesn't mind

I use ground flax seed mixed with parmesan and herbs to coat baked chicken and fish in place of bread crumbs. My kids don't even notice. |
