Before I started working full time a year ago, I used to be really good about tackling clutter and keeping everything neat and organized. Now that I am working, I know that things are not like they used to be. I would love to go room by room and declutter, move the furniture and dust in the tiny corners, etc., but I just do not have the motivation to do so. I know my kitchen cabinets could be organized better, but right now I am of the opinion that if I can't see the clutter, it doesn't matter. The weekends are just so short and the to-do list is long.

Spring break is coming up. I could tackle a room a day, but I want to hang out with my kids.

So, how often do you deep clean and declutter?

Since you work full-time, I think just keeping up with clutter would be good enough. Then, I would hire the deep clean. Well worth it so you can spend some time with your kids.

You should hire someone to come in at least once a month and deep clean -- very worth it from a health perspective to keep your stress level down.

I don't know that I've ever deep cleaned the whole house in one episode. We will blitz a room when something occurs to trigger it - redecorating, someone coming to stay, kid leaves home, new furniture or something like that. Otherwise I just do the normal stuff as I go along.

Can you tell that housework is not my forte - it's just so DULL!!!

Hi Gar!

I just do a room at a time, unfortunately that means my house is never completely clean all over at any given time!

OP i think its worth remembering, your children will remember spending time with mum in spring break, but they won't tell their own kids with pleasure ' oh I remember what fun we had when mum deep cleaned during spring break'!

It depends. I would say about once or twice a year.

Recently, I just decided to get rid of stuff! So, I posted on a FB yard sale site and said, most stuff free. I only had a few people come by, (it was short notice), but I got rid of some stuff and since I had everything in my garage, I just packed up the van and off to Goodwill I went.

I just went through room by room, closet by closet and started pulling stuff out that I knew we were not going to use.

We will be painting my daughter's room over and switching from one room to another room, so those two rooms will be gone thru again in the next month.

No set schedule.

It's usually how I cope with stress though and I have to be alone. I can't deep clean with three kids and a packrat husband around.
So usually when DH is away for training, waking up with a nightmare, kids are sick, or when I am sick or my tummy is upset/hurts at 2am.

The next morning everyone wakes up and compliments the cleaning fairy! HA!

For example the other night I woke up in a cold sweat, could NOT stop shaking/shivering, which in turn makes my tummy grumbly. So to refocus that jittery energy and keep my mind off it I wiped down all the kitchen cabinets and took a toothbrush to the crevices, scrubbed the kitchen floors, again took a toothbrush to the baseboards, scrubbed all the limescale off the faucet which will be back again next week but for that day it was nice and shiny again. Then I collapsed on the couch and took a nap for 2 hours before I had to get up and get the kids off to school.

I hope I'm correct in saying "when it needs it."

I don't deep clean (washing walls, fixtures, draperies) just because it is a certain date on a calendar.

We are finishing up a renovation that has a fine layer of construction dust over most everything - perfect incentive to deep clean!

I prefer to "deep Declutter" which makes cleaning a breeze.

Apparently about once a decade -- when we are repainting a room!

We are in the middle of it right now. My house is a wreck and DD is grumpy because about 70 percent of the downstairs stuff is in her room.

We are prepping to sell, though. We are painting the entire downstairs so the floor guys can come in 6 days (yikes!) to refinish our hardwood down here. (The upstairs doesn't really need it.)

Our first step -- we had an auctioneer come and cart away about 25 items of furniture and other stuff. The auction is tomorrow! We had too much stuff, and a lot of it, for us, wasn't the small stuff so much as furniture! The rooms will look much better without so much oversize items in them.

We'll be out of here for two weeks (staying in a hotel) while the floors are done. Then, when we come back, the downstairs will be totally empty, with refinished floors, and we can put things back and stage them. Then we start on the upstairs -- decluttering, decluttering. Which will be a bit easier than it was going to be, since we will have less furniture up there, too, thanks to the auction.

My big thing right now -- I have to dismantle our office/computer room/craft room. I have NO idea what I'm going to do with all my scrapbook stuff and kits. Yikes! I plan to head to Walmart today after work to look for giant bins. I'm really hoping I can find something big enough to hold 13x13ish stuff. I'll limit myself to a few bins and then sell off the others. Sigh!

Honestly, I don't.

I keep it pretty clean on a daily basis, which included cleaning under furniture for dust bunnies (when I mop, dusting high surfaces when I think about it, getting rid of things I don't want/don't need on a regular basis, etc.

It helps that my husband is a neat freak and it has rubbed off on me.

Maybe once a year. We've been "forced" to deep clean since our house in on the market. But the longer it's been on the market, the more I think we need to deep clean again. I don't relish that idea.

People deep clean? Occasionally I have the carpets cleaned once in a while... I dust when I notice it... If something looks dirty I address it. If I see spots on the wall I break out the Mr. clean eraser... Hmm

I am a SAHM, so I have it pretty easy in terms of having lots more time to clean. What do you mean by deep clean? I clean the bathrooms (scrub tub, toilets, counters, floors, baseboards weekly. I clean the other rooms weekly too. So I guess I consider what I do deep cleaning and do it a lot. But I have three girls 9, 13 and 15 and they are messy! The kitchen floor should be mopped daily!

So our house is more cluttered, but always clean. I think it is much harder for a working mom to keep up because they don't have all day to do it like I do.

I think you should enjoy spring break and not worry about cleaning! Maybe just clean for 30 minutes a few mornings (involve the kids) and I bet you will get a lot done.

I just read the posts, and obviously I don't have the same definition of deep cleaning (haha!). It seems like many of you just do it once a year, so you must do way more than what I do weekly.

I think the recommendations of a cleaning person sound good! That way you do have to worry about just cleaning on your days off.

Never have. I have cleaners come in every two weeks, due to my dust allergies and hate of housework. Plus I have bad knees.

I do, periodically, clean out closets, drawers, cupboards, bookcases etc.

I'm not even sure exactly what "deep clean" means.

I clean what needs cleaned, when it needs cleaned. Sometimes it's a quick once over to spruce things up. Sometimes it's a little more extensive.

I've never washed a wall in my life unless I've splattered something on it.

I do regular dusting, vacuuming, keeping things picked up. In addition I deep clean one room each month, purging whatever is necessary, washing walls, washing windows and window treatments, polishing wood work, inside cabinets and chests.

For instance, January is the attic. We have a full walk-up attic, part storage, part wrapping set up for Christmas, part fabric storage. Since I'm up there putting away Christmas the attic gets deep cleaned at the same time. That can take a couple sessions.
Feb. is bathrooms. Walls, windows, empty medicine cabinets and vanities and wash down etc. That takes only one day because its kept in order all the time.

March is the basement. That includes family room, laundry room and storage and freezer.

Etc. Depending on the mood I'm in I might knock that room room out in one weekend or I might break it down into small parts and work for an hour. Its a system that works well for me.

Dynalady that system sounds good and workable to me. I am having a new roof soon, so will be emptying the loft and getting new insulation. Maybe I should work my way down, month by month! Having a whole month and being able to break it down is a great way to do it.

Very rarely. Once in awhile I'll deep clean one room, but never the entire house all at once. I just don't have the time or motivation. I remember deep cleaning the master bath one time, and finding out that the glass covers on our light fixtures are NOT frosted. They were just covered in a layer of dust, LOL!

I go a really good clean once a week (i.e. scrubbing tub, toilets, dusting, refrigerator, fans, sweep and mop etc.) and usually get an "extra" project done during that time (i.e. baseboards, organizing clutter, blinds and windows etc.) so I never have to go through and do a "deep" clean. It is getting done regularly.

I have gotten it down to where I can get the entire house clean (kitchen, 3 bathrooms, family and living room, laundry room and master bedroom) clean in about 2 hours. It works out great for me I schedule 2 hours a week for cleaning, usually during the week when husband and kids are at school and work because I can muscle through pretty quick and I like to have my weekends free so we can play, also when family is home it takes a bit longer . Now that my daughter is older I try to do cleaning a couple times a month on a Saturday so I give my daughter the "oppurtunity" to do some cleaning.

This has always been how I clean, whenever I have moved out of an apartment or anywhere I was renting it would take me as long as a regular weekly cleaning to get the place ready to move.

We're in the "do it as it needs doing" camp.
The kids each have two chore days where they're responsible for the kitchen and one other job (and mom has one day plus whatever else needs doing during the week.) When it's their chore day, they finish up the dishes and then draw a job from the jar. If I see something that needs to be done, I just add it to the jar. Ex: On their last chore days: Emma decluttered and cleaned the cabinet under the kitchen sink on Sunday. Baylie went around the house and cleaned the light switches and door knobs (and the space around them.) Brendan cleaned the front bathroom.

This morning, when everyone is out the door, I will grab the jar and finish off whatever is left, so we start fresh this week. (Okay...I might let one or two non-urgent jobs stay in the jar. lol)

Not nearly enough ...

Having said that we're not sick and no one has called "Hoarders" so we must be doing okay.

I'm one who would rather hang out with the kids. I'm getting better about housework but I have a long ways to go.

I keep the house pretty de-cluttered because clutter stresses me out. On top of my regular weekly housework, I will periodically organize drawers and cupboards, closets, etc. and we regularly take loads of clothes and misc. items to the thrift store. I do wash windows a couple times a year (inside and out).

However, I don't think I "deep clean". To me that would include things like washing walls (other that spot cleaning), moving furniture and having carpets cleaned, emptying out cupboards and scrubbing them out, washing the tops of cupboards, etc.

I have discovered that I could literally clean forever. And that's not on my to do list. I aim for "presentable".

Spend spring break with your kids!!! It's their special time to do some fun stuff. You could maybe have them help you do some cleaning on one day, but I wouldn't stress over the rest.

I deep clean about twice a year - wash walls, wash all draperies, etc.

A clean house makes me happy, and helps me relax.

I'd never hire someone to clean my house for me - that's a waste of money to me. I work full-time, but I can afford a couple hours per week to really clean, and block out a weekend twice a year to deep clean without much issue. I pick up the house nightly for about 15-20 minutes. No biggie.

I have a theory that some deep cleaning chores - such as washing down walls in every room - have outlived their usefulness.

Our ancestors did it because heating sources were prone to leaving filth on the walls (coal dust, some oil heat, wood).

If you live in a fairly well sealed house and don't have any extenuating circumstances such as a dirt road or drive nearby - I bet you could go years without scrubbing down walls and no one would point or stare.

I was going to say 'every week', but maybe my idea of deep cleaning is different. I usually start in the master bedroom/bathroom Friday. Then I move onto the guest bathroom. Next is sweeping and mopping the floors (bedrooms, hallway, living room, dining room, and kitchen). If I'm motivated I will clean the basement bathroom and kitchen on Friday too. If not, I finish those two rooms up on Saturday.

Going through and purging or reorganizing is on a 'need to' basis. It's not really scheduled. My dd's like to help me purge and organize, so we can easily keep up with it.

I view deep cleaning as something much different than decluttering. Deep cleaning would be washing walls, kitchen cabinets, corners, ceilings, windows, washing down furniture, pulling furniture out from the walls, cleaning vents etc. My house is in desperate need of this.

What you are talking about is decluttering which is do at least 1x a month if not more. Obviously from what I stated, I would much rather declutter than deep housecleaning.

When it needs it. Maybe once every year or two.
And I consider deep cleaning to be scrubbing the baseboards, the stoop, washing walls, etc.

Decluttering is kind of an on-going process.

Deep clean? What is that?! Seriously, since I've not worked since a few major operations, I now accomplish WAY less than I ever did while I was working. When I worked 50+ hours a week I knew I had limited time to get things done. Now that I have all the time in the world, NOTHING gets accomplished. I never thought I'd say I miss work but I was so much more organized and happy when my life ran at full tilt!

Never.

Well, when I move, I declutter.

The only time I have deep cleaned was when I was unemployed and it was winter and I was stir crazy and bored.

I love reading the Chez Larsson blog. She makes me feel guilty for lazing around instead of tidying up!

this reminded me of the crackpot on here a while back who said she shampoos her carpets once a week, and I have now broken out into a cold sweat and need to take a nap.

You are supposed to deep clean?

I need to do this in a bad way. My house is a wreck! It will have to wait for summer though.

I have never washed my walls. Only the ones in the kitchen that get splattered with cooking messes.

I deep clean twice a year. Fall getting ready for Christmas and spring. I take a room at a time. Sometimes I only get 1 wall done. But eventually I make the entire circle. It's something I do for me. I like the corners clean. And in all reality the deep stuff is not what takes the time. It's the everyday stuff IMO.
