I really can't think of any, except someone breaking into the house.
But I think that is a fear of most people, whether a major fear or a mild concern (depending sometimes on where you live).

As a child I was terrified that somebody (a bad guy) was going to be in our game closet or attic. I had to pass both doors down the hallway to my room! I would literally sprint down the hallway so "he" couldn't catch me.

I am totally with you. My sheets have to be tucked under the mattress along the bottom and lower side so the monsters don't get my toes. My kids and dh think I am nuts and I know it is irrational but that's how it goes!

No dangling here! When I was young, I also had to have my bed against a wall and slept on that side. I scared myself silly when I was about 9. A group of neighborhood kids went exploring and found some skeletons of small animals in the foundation of an old house. The bigger boys dug them up and we asked the landowner what they were. He thought they were a raccoon and a cat. Around that time, we also had pet gerbils in one if those fancy cages with the tunnels. One of the tunnels fell off and all the gerbils escaped, never to be seen again. I had nightmares about both events. The skeletons for disturbing their resting place and the gerbils for not taking better care if them! It didn't help in my home that our bedrooms were on the ground floor with floor to ceiling windows. They never felt like they offered much protection from the outside. Fortunately, at least, the windows were covered with thick drapes! As a kid I alternated between sleeping with the lights on or total darkness. I couldn't decide wether it was better to see what was coming or not to see at all.

I read in the forward of a Stephen king book that he, too, is scared of what's under his bed. I figure that if he's scared of it, it's okay for me to be scared of it, too.

I cannot tell you how much better I feel that there are so many adults that feel this way!! I have to have covers on to be protected. It could be 600 degrees in my bedroom and I at least have to have a sheet on.

I kick my covers off a lot in my sleep in the summer, but if I wake up and realize that I'm exposed I'll put the sheet back on!!

I got over it, thank goodness. As a child I had to make a flying leap onto my bed to keep from getting grabbed by the fox that lived under it. Even when we moved that damned fox followed us and took up residence under my bed.

Huh. I have to have one foot out of the covers and preferably dangling. Otherwise I feel too confined.

I cannot, however, sleep comfortably in complete darkness. I need a little light coming from somewhere. Otherwise who knows what might be lurking across the room, unseen!

Funny. I love to have a foot dangling, that's how I stay cool.

I will say that I don't lie to go back downstairs at night or outside at night. I always get an adrenaline rush running back in because I'm sure there's a "bad guy" lurking.

I'm scared to have any body part dangling off the bed! I remember being little and hearing a story, maybe real, maybe urban myth, about a girl who had her hand dangling over the bed and thought her dog was licking her hand. Only it wasn't a dog but a man!!

I don't think I'll ever be a dangler!

I'm scared of what's behind the shower curtain. That stems from when I was nine and my dad took me to a horror-fest at the drive in. Three scary movies. In one of the movies a man was after a boy saying, "boy, I'm coming up get you boy". Well I fell asleep on our way home so he carried me in and told me to change then go to the bathroom. As I sat down to do my business my dad jumped out from behind the curtain yelling, "girl, I'm coming to get you girl".

And that's why almost 31 years later I always check behind the shower curtain.

Santa, for Christmas this year all I ask for is a big fat bank account and a skinny body. Please don't mix the up the two like you did last year.

I'm a major dangler! Can't sleep with my feet all tucked up. They have to be dangling from the end of the bed, or at least one foot dangling from the side.

But, I avoid going back downstairs to get anything after my husband has come to bed, because you know--every window has someone standing out there, looking in!

The shower curtain is one of mine, too. I can't stand to have a shower curtain closed when I walk into the bathroom, and will hesitantly approach it, looking for moving shadows, then snatch it back really quickly. I don't know why I expect anyone to be there; I have a pretty good alarm system on my house that should alert me to potential intruders!

The fear of a break-in is a huge fear of mine, but it's based in childhood experience. When my brother and I were very young, someone did break into our house. My mother rushed with the two of us back to her room and locked the door. He was trying to get in the door when something scared him off. Still freaks me out just thinking about it, because he obviously wasn't there to just rob the place.

Let's see....foot dangling, dark room with a mirror, hallways with doors (assume someone is hiding to scare me), behind shower curtain and let me add I can not shower and keep my eyes closed for a long period of time while rinsing my hair. I am thinking some one will sneak in while I have my eyes closed.

If you saw "The Conjuring", your childhood fear would be validated

When I was little, I would sleep with all the covers around my neck, just in case a vampire decided to fly in during the night and bite me (like the covers would deter him from that ) Luckily, I don't have that fear anymore but I still don't like my feet to dangle off the bed.

My childhood fear is that the closet door must be shut - in case something is in there, it can't get out if the door is shut - I still must have the closet door shut in order to be able to sleep.

Yep to the closet door!! I can dangle and sleep without covers and even look outside at night because there are no bogey men there.... but the closet? That's where the monsters live!! The doors MUST be kept shut!

I can't believe I'm 52 and just admitted that....

I am SO glad I am not the only one!!! It could be 11000000 degrees outside and i HAVE to have at least a sheet covering my feet!!!

Funny story: I went to see the 6th Sense when it came out and you know that scene with the girl under the bed? Ya, worst nightmare! That night, we had a thunderstorm and I woke up, having to pee. I was terrified to put my feet down on the floor, so I decided to jump from my bed to the bathroom door... so I launch myself as far as I can, TOTALLY forgetting about the ceiling fan spinning away! HOLY HELL! I almost scalped myself! But instead of the pain, all I could focus on was the fact that I was 100% on the floor, vulnerable!

When I was a little girl (like 2nd grade!) I used to watch the original DARK SHADOWS. Seemed as if Barnabas the Vampire spent a lot of time biting the necks of unsuspecting sleeping ladies...so when I would go to bed, I would roll the covers up around my chin, thus keeping my neck safe from surprise vampire attacks.

45 years later, I still sleep that way. Laugh if you will, but I've yet to be bitten by a vampire!

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of. I saw that story for the first time on reddit just a week or so ago and have not had my feet out of the covers since. If you don't want to be traumatized don't read below, but this is the story as I read it...

A girl lying in bed in the dark hears a bump in the night and is a little spooked, so she comforts herself by putting her hand down near the floor for her dog to lick and goes back to sleep. In the morning, she goes into her bathroom to find her dog dead and written on the mirror "Humans can lick too."

I can't sleep with the closet door open. Something may come out of there at night you know?!?!

I DO have a reason though - as a child, the crawl space to the attic was in my closet. One night a squirrel came out of the crawl space, out of my closet and into my room. Now, you can imagine the noises I was hearing as this creature was making his enterance...... I slept with all of my toys piled up against my closet door for a long, long time after that!

Another non-dangler here. I also have a fear of sitting too long on the toilet. My brother told me when I was little that a shark would come up and bite my butt. My mom said ever since then I was the fastest kid in the bathroom. Too this day I don't linger in there. I do my business and get out.

I have no fear of what might be under my bed (I store too much stuff under there for a monster to actually fit. At least not a monster big enough to do me any harm. ) But I do have an irrational bathroom fear. When I use the restroom in the middle of the night I don't turn on the light so I can keep my night vision and not wake up too much. I'm always just the teeniest bit worried about those goofy urban legends about snakes in the sewers coming up into people's toilets. I can't decide if it's a good thing or not that I can't really check the toilet for snakes in the dark.

no fear of boogeyman here, but my cat, Winston will attack any foot or hand dangling off the bed.

there was a Stephen King novel of short stories that I do close all closet doors because of. I cannot have open closet doors at night. And I was an adult when I read it.

Me, too!

I also cannot turn off the basement light from the bottom of the stairs without having to run back up the stairs. If I start out walking up I can't help but look back behind me and I imagine something is going to jump out from under the stairs and grab my foot. So I run. What a big baby!

I actually did that to a friend of mine. She had a BIG picture window with no curtains and when you're inside the house, it looks out into total blackness...so, when I showed up one night and just stood outside that window until she walked by. The scream, LMAO! Totally worth it. She got curtains after that.

I also have to keep a leg out of the covers for thermostat control. I will never hang them over the side of the bed, though.

I wasn't like this as a child. When I was recovering from my hysterectomy, I hung out on my sofa for the first two weeks, then I would take naps in our guest room where dh had put one of those fabric mattress protectors from the hospital under the sheets. --I had a blood clot the size of a beef liver in my incision which was extremely painful and bloody. It took an extra month to heal because of it.

One night I was having a hard time sleeping because of pain. I finally got comfortable and was drifting off to sleep when something grabbed hold of my leg and wouldn't let go!

It was my stupid cat who was upset because I wouldn't let him sit in my lap. So he thought it would be funny to play with my outstretched leg. I levitated off the bed, screamed bloody murder, which freaked dh out because I scream less than he does. The cat was so frightened, he ran into our basement and stayed there for a day or two.

No more hanging anything off the bed.

I was afraid that Huckleberry Hound was going to sneak into my bedroom at night!
