Just wondered if any of our Peas are pharmacists or work in a pharmacy and know if the generic version of Aciphex (for GERD) is out yet?

Thanks!

It's been approved by the FDA within the past week, so should be rolling out to pharmacies within the next six months or so (maybe a year, no real ability to tell).

I work for a pharmacy wholesaler, not available to order through us yet.

not a pharmacist, but found this article...

Medscape article about the generic

The actual FDA announcement: FDA announcement dated 11/08/13

usually generic manufacturers have them 'waiting in the wings' so to speak, so they can be available ASAP once the patent is finally lifted. So it might not take all that long to be available.

Thanks....I cannot read that Medscape article. Says you have to be a member.

I just ordered a refill of my Aciphex (brand not generic) and the price jumped $60 from last month! That is why I wondered if the generic came out yet! I will ask when I go to the drug store to pick this up but thought I'd check with the Peas first!

Ooh thanks FarmDPea!
Maybe our Sam's Club Pharmacy will get it in soon too. I can hold off getting my prescription refilled since I have some still!

Update: So I went to the pharmacy and they said they can order the generic Aciphex in, it will be here end of the week. It would be $44 for a months worth of the generic on my insurance plan....versus $144 for the namebrand! And he did say the brand name cost jumped the $60 since last month due to the med going generic now. Crazy!

sounds like the brand-name mfr knows they're going to lose sales now that they've lost their patent protection, so they're trying to make more $$ on the sales they ARE still getting. (which is rotten, but legal- I guess they're counting on some people not noticing the price increase right away.)

Final update: Pharmacy did finally get the generic Aciphex in (Mylan manufacturer). Ended up being $10.10 for 30 days! Woo! I was so happy! And it seems to be working for me so win-win.

Many times the generic *is* the brand product. The manufacturer plays both sides of the field, selling it as brand and generic. My wholesaler is Cardinal Health, one of the big wholesalers, and the generic is available from them. I am glad it is working for you! By any chance, does your new generic look like the brand product you had been taking?

The generic is a smaller pill and a tan color, versus the brand being yellow and a bit bigger.
