Going to the store in a while. I'll have to decide which one to try. I'll let the Peas know the results!

I personally would use white beans/cannellini beans. They are creamier and are used fairly commonly in Italian foods. I think they would be a better match.

Last night I made the spaghetti alla Ceci recipe posted in your other thread about this, and it was really good! The whole fam loved it and says it goes on the keeper list

No she said cannellini beans. Not the same as chick peas at all. I still don't think they belong in spaghetti sauce. Not a regular one anyway.

Canellini beans (not even remotely close to chickpeas) are fantastic with pasta.

I make a black beans and pasta recipe that is really yummy. It has been a while since I made it, so hopefully I get the recipe right.

It has sauteed mushrooms and garlic mixed with black beans and diced tomatoes and a little crushed red pepper. I serve over spaghetti.

I think it would also be good with some diced zucchini sauteed with the mushrooms. My dh likes onions so you could add that if you like. Some spinach mixed in would be good too!

So basically dice and saute your choice of vegetables, (don't forget the salt) add some garlic, your black beans, some diced tomatoes (fresh or canned) and a touch of crushed red pepper. Serve over spaghetti or pasta of your choice, add some parm if you wish.

Very yummy!

I add beans to my pasta to give it protein, nothing wrong with that, I've seen plenty recipes for it.

I did use chick peas in my pasta sauce last night. I ground them up by pulsing in a food processor. So that would work too if you can't find white kidney beans. ( we eat those at least one a week -/ they are good in lots of things too).

Cannellini is a BETTER choice. But why ruin great sauce with beans?? Now if you were making Minestrone that's different. LOL

I use lentils to make vegetarian meatballs, so if you're looking for a ground meat replacement, they would probably do well.

I've put lentils in spaghetti sauce many times. Maybe it's more common among vegetarians/vegans? I don't know, but my mom made it that way growing up sometimes, even though we all ate meat then. It may not be truly Italian, but I don't really care about that, lol. I just care if it's healthy and tastes good.
