Dh called and told me that his grandpa, who is 90, was taken to the hospital today. From what dh said his mom said, the doctors are just trying to make him comfortable and they don't expect him to be going home.

I love this man. He took the place of my grandparents when they passed away. I talked to him every couple of days and the first time I don't (we are in the middle of a move and I kept losing track of time, which is no excuse) this happens and I feel horribly guilty.

Plus, ds and I are a couple of hours away from dh (birthday trip for ds, his birthday is Sunday) with a couple of ds' friends. I feel even more guilty because I hope that if something does happen that it isn't on ds' birthday.

I just don't know what to do. Dh wasn't going to say anything because he didn't want to upset me/ruin the trip, but he knows that I would rather know than be completely blindsided. Do I cut this trip short and head to where dh is/try to see grandpa or wait and see what/if anything happens? I dont really want my last memories of him to be in a hospital.

I'm trying so hard to be calm because we can't afford for my MS to flare up right now, but I just want to hide in the hotel bathroom and cry. I'm going to miss that man so much.

So, could you all send us some positive thoughts, something to help me be normal for ds and strong for dh? And some kind thoughts for dh's grandpa - he's a strong willed old guy, but he has missed his wife with all his heart for the last six years and I think he's ready to go.

Thanks...

My dh's grandpa passed away overnight. Dh just called and told me that he was doing better, had been joking with his nurses who were helping him walk a bit. When he got back in bed, he passed.

So, here's to the memory of DJ - a wonderful husband and father, a WWII vet who would filter his stories based on ds' age, the hardest working man I have ever known, a bit of a flirt who could still blush at 90, a strong-willed individual that never wavered in his beliefs, and someone who will be missed dreadfully by all that knew him.....

Thanks, everyone. Today has been so odd -trying to keep things flowing for ds and his friends, and fielding calls from family and friends about DJ.....

Everything is being put on hold until next week, so hopefully we'll have a peaceful?quiet?uneventful? (not sure of the word to use) weekend.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had a very close relationship with my grandmother too and understand that kind of love.
