I know I was supposed to post this yesterday, but I just couldn't get around to it. So here it is, a day late...

This is my most recent self-portrait. It was taken a few weeks ago. I hate doing self portraits. But then, I hate having my picture taken at all.

1. Who are you ? Please include self portrait and any links to other sites featuring you, like your blog, website, etc. Pimp yourself out!!

Barbie Lynn Schwartz. Married to DH for 16 years, mom to one terrific daughter who is a senior at the University of Hawaii. I love animals in general, cats in particular. I love to read, watch movies, and I am totally hooked on several TV shows Dexter, TrueBlood, Big Love, Weeds, Fringe, LOST...I'm a vampire junkie and can read an entire book from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Sookie Stackhouse series, or Dark Hunter series in one day. I love to travel, and I want to take some creative writing classes.

Both of my blogs and all of my websites can be accessed from my signature here on 2Peas.

2. What inspired you to get into photography? And when?

I received my first *real* camera as a Christmas gift from my soon-to-be first husband when I was a freshman in college. It was a Canon AE-1 Program, and it's almost completely manual. It was the first camera to have Aperture-priority and Shutter Priority settings, but the focus and film advance were still manual. I spent a lot of time in the darkroom that semester. But the photography bug didn't stick. I moved on to other things, and my Canon was rarely used. Then I discovered scrapbooking in 1997 when I saw an issue of Creaking Keepsakes. I was hooked. I had an art background already, but not enough talent to make a career out of it. But scrapbooking...well I could do that! After a few months, I was creating these wonderful page layouts. And putting mediocre --at best-- photographs on them. I decided to take a basic photography class at our local community college. Next thing I know, I was enrolled in the Visual Communications degree program, and spent the next few years taking nearly every class offered. I opened my business in January of 2002, and my first client was a friend/employee of my husband's who was about to be sent to the Iraqi war. I photographed his family before his guard unit was deployed. And never got paid. Two years later, he gives my husband a fancy computer keyboard in *payment* for the work I did. Yeah, I didn't quite get that, either.

3. What is your education? Degree? Self-taught? Workshops?

I am two classes shy of a degree in photography, and I'm trying to talk myself into going back and taking those two classes that I have been avoiding (the history of photography and portfolio practicum.) I have also been to a couple of workshops (that were a waste of money) and spent a small fortune on books. Plus, I am a member of numerous forums for both amateur and professional photographers.

4. What kind of photographer would you describe yourself as?

I don't think I can answer that because I'm constantly evolving. When I first started out, I thought I wanted to be a wedding photographer. I quickly learned that wedding photography is extremely demanding, high-pressure, and very labor-intensive. Not to mention it steals all your weekends away from your family. I still do the occasional wedding, but they are not a focal point of my business. I thought I would hate school photography, but it turns out I like it. I also like editorial work a lot more than I thought I would. I love capturing bits and pieces of my life--the things in my life--and writing about them. That's been a big reason I started my Project 365 blog.

5. What kind of equipment do you use? Not every piece you own, but your favorites or use most often.

I currently shoot with a Nikon D700. Love this camera. Seriously. The lens more often found on my camera is my Tamron 28-75 2.8. I also have the 70-200, among others. I use Alien Bee studio strobes, seamless paper, giant softboxes, and my SB800 flash off-camera.

6. What did/do you struggle with the most?

In the beginning, honestly--exposure. And believe it or not, I still can't read the in-camera meter. But once I bought a hand held light meter (Sekonic L-358) I didn't have a problem.
Now I struggle to get really sharp images with my 70-200. It's heavy, and I don't have the most steady hands.

7. What was your biggest "A-ha" moment? Cam be something technical/camera-related, something personal as it relates to photography, or something you learned about yourself as a photographer.

The biggest ah-ha moment for me was learning to meter with the Sekonic. That and fill flash!

8. Biggest lesson learned? Can be either about photography, the business, yourself, etc.

I've learned that I suck at marketing, and I really need to hire a marketer.

9. What's your greatest triumph or achievement? Could be just opening your own business, to awards, to a compliment.

Being published in a book, and a few magazines. My first portrait sale over $1,000 was a pretty big moment, too.

10. What is one of the most important mistakes you made that served as a basis for your progression?

Doing business with friends. Big mistake. It's why I have very thorough and written business policies now.

11. What is it about photography that makes your heart sing and your mind race with possibilities?

The emotion that a single image can evoke.

12. Which do you like better - taking the photo or processing it? Why?

I like both equally well usually. Now, in the hot, humid summer months, I prefer the processing since it's done in my air-conditioned office, lol! But I love taking a SOOC image and making it really sing in Photoshop. It's like magic. And speaking of magic, how cool is it that we have the tools for digital dermatology and digital dieting at our fingertips? Not to mention digital dentistry? And to think I used to be a purist who swore I would never give up film...

13. What inspires you? Could be anything - other photographers, nature, art, music, people, etc.

Mostly other photographers. I don't always have the imagination to see the possibilities that they see. Once they have shown me, I can find it and interpret it on my own.

14. What is something about you that we don't know? Could be something serious or silly- your choice.

Before becoming a photographer, I was many things: a tour guide at Graceland, a daycare teacher, worked various retail jobs, including the cosmetics department at two major department stores, a Mary Kay consultant, a receptionist, a legal assistant, and administrative assistant, a medical billing specialist, an office manager for a chiropractor, a staffing manager for a staffing company, an account manager for Telecheck...all of which I hated.

And I am absolutely terrified of spiders and heights. And a little afraid of the dark, lol.

15. Can you share with us your loved ones? Especially if they have been featured in your work?

Here's the three of us at the lake a couple years ago.

This is my husband Kelly on our trip to Washington 2 years ago. This was near the marina in Gig Harbor.

My daughter Parrish, acting silly somewhere in downtown Seattle...

Parrish and Kelly in Hawaii 3years ago.

Parrish with her surfboard in Waikiki...taken by her roommate with a cheap cell phone camera.

Some more of Parrish--my favorite model because she'll do just about anything I ask her to for a photo.

My parents on my mom's 70th birthday last year.

My younger brother, Ben.

My older brother, Jim, and his wife and kids (Karen, Kendall, and Jax) at their lakeside home in Florida.

16. Can you share your top tip/technique with us?

One of my favorite processing tools is MCP's Eye Doctor and Dentist action. That, and the Image Processor.

17. Who are you picking next and why?

Heather B. (Dewey) She's sweet, and super quirky and goofy. Amazingly talented. And very different from me.

18. Please share some of your favorite works with us!!

Gosh, my favorites change constantly. But you can usually find them on my blogs and on my websites. Here's my most recent favorite:

Woo hoo! I'm so glad to see this. I know you've had a lot going on in your life lately, so thank you for taking the time to write all that out.

That was a fascinating read! I love the shot of your, Kelly and Parrish at the lake. Good for you for being in the shot!

And yay, Heather is next.... I can't wait!

P.S. I'm about halfway finished with the first Sherrilyn Kenyon book....please tell me the later ones are better. This one is just a bit, well, contrived (albeit well-written, just kind of...I don't know, shallow). I have a feeling they must get better later.

I was so looking forward to this and I can't wait to read Heather's.

THanks for taking the time to do this... and for your book suggestions. You rock, girlie!

I liked hearing about what jobs you had previous. That's always so surprising to me, to find out how photographers ended up where they are. I enjoyed seeing the shots of your family too and just an all around fun interview.

When is mine due? Gotta get busy.

Yup they get better. My favourites are the were hunters too but the Acheron book comes first. I bought it in the trade paper bakc so it is heavy and huge but it is defintiely at go back to book.
An Barbie I have to say I too love love love the BDB books. fabulous - I cant put them down!

Barbie,

It was so interesting to read about your journey into photography. I have been a lurker for awhile now and just learning about the digital camera...I too started out many moons ago with a manual SLR which bit the dust about 10 yrs ago. I just got my first DSLR and am learning all over again! It's amazing how photography has evolved. I never thought I would go digital--I thought nothing would be better than film!

You & your family are beautiful! All of the photos I've seen of yours are gorgeous as well.

Thanks for all your input on this board...I have learned many new things from ALL the PhotoPeas here!

Thanks again!

Denise

Gorgeous self-portrait! You have a beautiful family too! It was so nice to read a little bit about you. I too am a vampire junkie. It all started yrs ago with my first Anne Rice book. I'm going to look into those books you mentioned. All the shows you mentioned are part of my faves too and can't wait for the new season to start.

Thx for giving us a glimpse into "you"!

Barbie, wonderful interview. I thought you'd been in business for much longer. I knew you went to school for photography and didn't have a full degree, but I assumed that was your original college degree; I had no idea it was so recent. So interesting!

Lovely photos, every single one of them. I've said this before, but you are very, very pretty!
