I've been meaning to do this tutorial since last year when I figured out a better way to shoot self-portraits. I'm starting to see lots of posts re. doing family shots yourself for the holidays, so now is the perfect time.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

And here is the main image I used for our Christmas cards....realize that the tripod was set up about 50 feet from where we were standing, so running back and forth would have been brutal, or just impossible:

Here it is on the front of our Christmas card (yes, friends and family, I DO exist!)

Oh, thanks Anne! I have been meaning to ask you about this! But I have a D90 - guess I am out of luck.....

The good news is that the D90 + wireless remote allows for a timer. So you can press the remote then move your hand/remote out of the way. But I would prefer the interval method....

That photo is gorgeous!!!

I have the D70, and I don't think that I have this feature either. Like the PP said, I use the remote on a delay, that way I can trigger it, and then have a few seconds to reposition my arm.

Anne, thanks so much for this lesson. I don't have this feature on my camera, but I appreciate your tips anyway.

On another note, I was actually looking for some inspiration the other day (for a family portrait) and remembered your photo from last year....so great to see it again! It is perfection. When my DH returns from deployment (in December), I'm determined to take an outdoor family pic, so I need to start scouting locations soon (not to mention, working on my technique).

I shoot Canon, so I don't think I have this feature, but thanks for the food for thought....I'll see what I can figure out!

Great tutorial, Anne. Thanks for posting. I was considering upgrading to the D90, but now that I know the D2 series can do interval shooting....
hmmmm....

You're all very welcome! I am so disappointed FOR you all that don't have this built-in. That sucks.

Vini - so glad the photo came up at the right time for you! Good luck on your own family portrait. (And please thank your husband for his service to our country!)

Rebecca - it seems like sort of a small thing, but it is a great reason to go with a camera of this series. I don't need it often, but when I need it, it is SO nice to have. We actually set Barbie's D700 to do this when we took the big group photo in Nashville.

Thanks Anne...that means a lot and I'll pass this on to him. I just put him on a plane this morning to finish this deployment. I'm so glad I found your post, so I can stay focused on his return.

Oh, Vini, I can't even imagine how hard that must be. I'll keep you in my thoughts, along with your DH! I seriously get all emotional when I see servicemen and -women in the airport. I just think of what they've been experiencing and how they must miss their families and their families miss them. We saw a Dad in his desert uniform (sorry, don't know the technical term for it) greeting his wife and 3 little girls just a few weeks ago when we came back from Florida. I was trying really hard not to cry in the airport!

For canon users, I bought a remote off eBay that triggers the shutter either instantly or with a 2 second delay. It was only $5, and the delay is very helpful. Not quite as nice as the Nikon feature described here, but I've found it useful.

Wow Anne!! This is really STRANGE!!! I just logged on to research this very subject....Interval Shooting!!! Of course, my mouse always seems to move towards the 2peas icon on my desktop and clicks on it before I do anything else!! Weirdest think....like a Ouija board or something!!

Our anniversary is Sat and we are going out of town to celebrate. I thought that a perfect gift for DH would be self-portraits (boudoir-like) Anyway, I wanted to use my D300 instead of the D90, but the D300 doesn't have a wireless remote like the D90! I read something about timed interval shooting a few days ago and was going to research it to see if my camera had it and how to use it!!

This tutorial was perfect timing....down to the minute!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do it!! I loved seeing that beautiful family photo again too!!

....Now, thanks to you, I effortlessly set my camera to interval shooting and I'm off to embarrass myself!! I probably will NOT post the shots as I DO NOT look like Molly !!

I'm so touched by your thoughtfulness and I wish there were more Annes in the world! I relayed your message to my DH and he said thanks. He knows how much I admire your work...add me to the list of "I want to be Anne when I grow up"..LOL! You've really lifted my spirits today and I thank you for that.

Hey everyone, I'm so sorry I didn't come back earlier and respond to those of you who left comments after my last post!

Kara - thank for the info about Canons. It's such a bummer that you all have to do something more complicated.

Danielle - that is so wild that you were just about to research this! How did your boudie pics go? I'll bet you look fabulous, dahling! Oh wait, you said it worked great....that's wonderful!

Vini - I know it's been a while, but you are so welcome. What our servicemen and -women do for our country is simply beyond anything I can say....when I saw the recent story about the soldier that just got awarded the Medal of Honor...wow. It constantly renews my faith in humanity that there are men and women with the fortitude and courage to serve their country during a war.

Jami - thank you soooo much for adding this one in!

mysweetmemories - you're welcome. But finding this stuff in your manual is so tricky, sometimes! Glad this was helpful.

Thanks again, all!

Anne

What a great feature! I'm pretty sure that the Pentax K-7 and K-x have interval shooting too!

Anne...

I just wanted to tell you I spit my water all over my laptop reading the 1st part...omg, that was so funny. I am Canon girl so I don't have the interval shooting option, darn it. But I am bound and determined that I will get a Christmas Card photo just half as beautiful as yours. It is absolutely stunning. Thank you for sharing!!!

Hi Debb - good to "see" you here! That's GREAT that the Pentax has this feature!

Jill - ha, that bribe is too funny! And the bonus of using yourself is...you'll have photos of YOU!

camerahappygirl - "BTDT" stands for "been there, done that." And yes, it happens a lot to photographers, LOL.

Chris - thank you! Have you looked in to the remote trigger for Canons? Maybe that will make your family photos easier. Canon needs to get on the ball here and put these in their cameras!
