I'm not a professional photographer, but I do take good pics of my kids...

Do you still pay $ for the school pictures? I was planning on it just because it's what you do and I'd never considered not... But my DH asked if I could do it myself to save the $60+...

Thoughts??

I get the smallest possible package that will include a class photo because my child would like that. Then we do our own photos and they always turn out better and are enjoyed more by family.

I'm like Susan Beth - I buy the smallest package available - not sure why, but apparently had a good reason when the decision was made to continue to do it with our final kiddo going through school.

Absolutely!

For me, school pictures have almost nothing to do with photography. They are more a rite of passage and a joy track through the years. I buy just the basic package and will probably only use them for a giggle-filled slide show at their rehearsal dinner, but... definitely worth it.

Quality photography - no
Priceless momento - you betcha

No I do not buy school photos anymore.

I was thinking about this a few years ago and decided it was silly for me to be paying money for school photos when I could easily take them myself.

I have to say I do not. I have 4 kids and even the cheapest package is $35 (each)... I do usually keep the proof sheet, though. Our school has started asking parents that want pics to prepay without even seeing the pics

It is prepay at our school too... And there is no cheap package, and no proof sheet. I kinda want them, but the cost is making me balk a bit. Decisions decisions!

That's a bummer that they don't offer a cheap option! We have to prepay too but there is a $12 package which has the class picture and some wallets. I usually just get that and if I'm dying to use the photo on a scrapbook page I scan, enlarge, and print at home (shhhh, don't tell).

Yes, I buy the individual photos (the most basic package) and the group photos. The reasons being that I like that "exact same photo" from year to year showing their growth. And maybe you all didn't know, but in most cases, this is a fundraiser for the school. Our school gets 50% of what the parents pay for the photos and it goes towards playground equipment, books for the library, new computers, new..whatever they need that cannot be afforded with their normal budget. So yes, I buy them always.

Yeah I do buy the group photo, I forgot about that, and it's $12, but it doesn't come with any wallets. I only have to buy 2 of those since the twins are in the same class and my oldest is out of elementary school. I usually also buy the sports pics (team/individual)-even though last year for basketball, one of the moms that subs did them with a point and shoot in the cafeteria (and used the on camera flash, lol). For something like that, it's more about the memory, and the photo of the team together. But again, the twins are on the same team, so that breaks up the cost a bit.

No, I don't purchase school photos anymore. I take enough photos of them myself.

Every studen receives a class photo free of charge. If that wasn't the case, I would purchase one.

Like others here I just buy the smallest package that has an 8x10. I have a frame on a shelf that has the boys school picture and I just put the newest one on top. It's fun to go through and lay them all out and see how much they have changed.

I stopped with the school pictures when Matt went to High School. As expensive as the elem. pictures are the HS pictures are stupid expensive. I can't even buy an 8x10 for under $50. It's nuts! For him I just use his most recent HS dance picture.
