Whenever there is an opportunity to take a photo of my DD doing something cute (which is always I have my camera) This may not be the best bokeh photo but I took this photo after we cut wheat and there were just a few little lonely wheat left standing at the edge of our yard. I take photos of anything and everything. I figure that is the only way I am going to learn.
I always welcome CC

I was just posting this image on another thread touting the buttery smooth bokeh from the Canon 85 1.2 and saw this challenge. I'm going to make it a twofer...
BTW, I love the Praying Manits! So wish I had the patience - those images are beautiful.

Betsy,
In this context, bokeh is referring to the out of focus area of the image. It is achieved by using a short depth of field from a wide aperture (low number). More blur is not necessarily better, it just depends on what the image and context demands. I suggest setting your camera to Aperture Priority (AP) mode and dial open the aperture to the lowest number and study how it impacts your portraits.
Now for the geeky answer: bokeh is not really about the quantity of blur, it is about the quality of that blur. "Good" bokeh is really a description of the capability of the lens to blur a subject with as few hard edges to the blur as possible - these are spherical aberrations. So for good bokeh, those are bad, but for cool sun flare effects you may want just the opposite and that's why I waste too much money on camera lenses, ha!
Have fun |

I took this photo today while in the middle of a Cinderella photo shoot with my daughter.
Last Christmas I tried learning bokeh with the Christmas tree, I tried to position an ornament just right with the lights and create bokeh, looking back at those photos now I sure didn't do a very good job, but I also only had my 18-55 kit lens. |

Those colours in the flower and background are gorgeous the picture just sings.
Many other lovely shots too.
I took this back in the summer also. Not sure if it qualifies as bokeh, but it does have a nice creamy background. I took it with my Lensbaby so it is more an effect of finding the sweet spot, as opposed to setting the aperture very low.
I think I was using the f=4 ring for this shot

Brenda
Usually people put an actual image in here rather than just a link. You need to host your image somewhere, I usually do it on photobucket but I think you can do it in the Gallery here at Two Peas also ...I just usually find it is easier to get it in the thread at a good size by using photobucket and then picking up the image code from there and adding it to the thread. I think if you look up in the stickies at the top of the board there are instructions on how to do this.
ETA: look in the Faq for photog peas thread near the top. | |

Me again adding this to bounce the thread back to the top. With all the Christmas photos getting snapped out there I'm sure there must be some of you with great bokeh to share.
