Hey, I need an external hard drive but I have no idea what to look for. I currently have thousands of pics on my hard drive and would like to back them up. Any thoughts or recommendations? TIA! |

Please get something with AT LEAST 3TB. It will last you forever. Maybe. Here in Australia we have the Seagate brand, I had a 500gb one for 5 year, still going strong. But now i use the 3 'tegga' and its sooooo fast.
Please back up your photos to other sources too! (photobucket, cd, a 2nd hard drive... ) just in case. |

yes please don't just back up to one source. get the hard drive, but use a web based storage (snapfish, shutterfly, etc) and burn some dvd's. I have pics on my hard drive, online, and I made two copies of dvd's.. one for my house and one set stays at my dad's in a town two hours away. |

Personally I like the 1 TB external hard drives. Even external ones may crash so I would rather replace one of those than a 3 TB. You can find them for under 100 bucks so pretty affordable. I don't like keeping a lot of photos on my computer. Just ones that are recent or editing. Makes my computer run much faster. When I back up I save them to at least two external drives. ITs easy to do at the same time. |

OK, so it is safe to burn to cd's as well? For some reason I had it in my head that those weren't safe. Don't know why...I have music cd's from my college days that are still good...Some Nirvana, anyone?
OK, I will be looking at something with at least 1 TB or higher. Thanks for all your help!! |

I recommend the Western Digital "My Book". I have about 7... starting with 300gb.. and now up to 3tb. I have never had one fail, or corrupt, or give me any trouble.

I have a Western Digital portable external hard drive and LOVE it! I can bring it anywhere and it's just same size as my passport! 1tb I bought for $75. Then I saw it sale on Black Friday Seagate brand for $50 so I bought another one to 'back up my back up' just in case.. If you can get the bigger capacity the better.. | |
