After wanting one for a couple of years, I finally talked my Santa into getting me a decent camera - a Nikon D5100 (I know because dh is techno-challenged and I have to order everything for him )
So, my question is - What is your best advice to get me up and running on Christmas morning?? I've started reading the Dummies book, as well From Snapshots to Great Shots by Rob Sylvan, and the 12 week course from here. Any great, handy tips for a total novice?
Thanks! | |

Take lots of photos. Try manual as often as you can. Do a lesson a day in the 12-week course (yes, you'll be done in less than two weeks, but then you can go back and do them one a week, because more than once for each lesson will be so good for you and help you to get to know your camera).
For me, the learning curve is always steepest when I get out there and do. Yes, you'll make mistakes, but that is why you can delete as needed. |

Thanks... I can't wait! I have always taken loads of pics, so that won't be a problem now. We will have our first grand child in the spring, I want to be at least comfortable with the camera before then. | |

One of these, sooo much better than the manuals that come with the camera.
For Nikon
There are also laminated, camera specific cards with all the cameras high lights that can go right in your bag. |
