Ever heard of this technique? It results in some pretty amazing bokehs!

I gave it a try and the results were really interesting (all images are straight out of the camera):
Shot with 50mm at f/1.8. 6000ISO. The image on the left is standard shooting. The image on the right is using the free lensing technique. Look at that crazy awesome bokeh! I kinda like it!

LOL! I came in here thinking you had a misspell, and you were offering free lenses!
And I just read about this technique today. It came in my email from PictureCorrect.com! Very interesting! But I don't think I'm coordinate enough to pull it off! Good job on your examples! |

This technique scares me...it does sound like it could give cool effects, but I worry about dirt getting into the camera or the back of the lens. In my house, where there is always at the very least cat hair floating around I'm not liking the idea of leaving my camera open to the elements like that..I might think about trying it with an old camera and lens but not with my present 'good' camera. | |

gardencat - yeah, definitely a style that requires very careful control. My tests were obviously indoors so, weather wasn't an issue.
I may be a bit more cavalier about my equipment because I just got it, but I tend to think how this isn't much different than when I change lenses - the housing is exposed then as well, even if it is only for a little bit. It is an awkward technique to be sure and one to use in very specific situations I would think.  |

Well changing lenses makes me nervous too.  
I may be a little paranoid. But when I change lenses I do it as quickly and carefully as possible.And I focus just on that if I were concentrating on settings and framing the shot I think I'd be more likely to have an oops!
I know I am probably over cautious...I like the equipment I have now and don't want to/can't afford to replace it.
I do have an older camera and some cheaper lenses though that I might be tempted to try it with sometime. | |
