I wasn't sure which board to put this on, but thought perhaps this one was the right one. I have issues with Shutterfly. I am making digital layouts to be printed 4x6. I upload them to Shutterfly, check the "preview" to make sure they won't be cropped incorrectly, and then when I receive my prints it never fails that they have chopped part of it off. They try to tell me this is normal, but I don't understand why/how. If it is showing correctly in the preview, then why is it being cropped? I've had other companies print out the same photos just fine, but yet Shutterfly is telling me it isn't their fault. Very frustrating. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

You are going to experience issues with cropping regardless of what company/lab you use - unless you crop accordingly before uploading. Shutterfly gives you the option to review the crop before you place your order - I strongly encourage using this. In the process, you are walked through doing a 'custom crop' which will often place a boarder around your image in order to achieve a non-sliced final product. I will research previous posts about the best way to do crop ratios before uploading and come back and add to this post.

Not that it will help - but just about all of us have been there, done that with learning crop/print. If only they could just print what we see (in my simple mind this is how the world would best go around).

trying to find old posts and info on sizing/cropping - there are probably more but I think/hope these will help (especially last one - scroll down and Nikki really breaks it down).

how to size

a little discussion about cropping

yet another question about cropping/ratio

hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your replies. I do preview the crop before I order. That's the part that is annoying me. It looks absolutely fine in the preview, but then they still crop it. I just don't understand why it's cropped after it's already cropped and previewed.

I've had this problem at Shutterfly many, many times. It drives me crazy and I'm sorry I don't know how to correct it.

Sounds like it is a fault of Shutterfly if you are previewing them and they are okay. Is there any way to check the picture you received against the one you ordered? Not sure if that info is available in your account info. Sounds very frustrating!

Have you contacted their customer service? I've found them to be overall pretty helpful.

Yes, I have contacted their customer service, and they won't tell me why it happens. They told me I need to check and make sure they're cropped correctly before I order. I explained to them I'm not exactly a novice at this and know to check the crops on my pics, but it didn't seem to matter. I know that the pics should print how they look in the preview. And I know the crops will be different for different sizes. Why they aren't printing them as shown in the preview, I have no idea, and they won't tell me. Very frustrating.

There is previewing and then there is previewing with Shutterfly. When you put it in your cart click preview, then click the size you want to order, it should give you a different view/the cropped version. At that point you can click over to custom crop and I believe the instructions provide that you click on preview yet again in order to apply the custom crop. It is misleading to be sure.

When I get a chance, I'll pull up my account and review what I had to go through the last time in order to avoid chops.

but I understand your frustration - how hard would it be for them to just take the image and fit it on the desired size. ideal I realize, but life would be so much simpler.

Well, I think I figured out the problem. I measured the 4x6 prints from Shutterfly and they are not 4x6. They're more like 4x5 3/4. So I'd say that's the reason the ends of the pics are being chopped off. Not impressed at all.

Goria-
YOU honestly will have to stop using them. I think their printing is below some of the labs I have tested anyway. just my opinion. I would suggest you try MPIX it is by far the best lab that I have tested and very good with their cropping sizes etc... just my opinion

Jennifer~
I think a photography class should be a requirement in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it.
