I can view the pictures while the card is in the camera. However, when in the reader it just keeps telling me to reformat it.
How do you retrieve the photos off of it?

This is a common problem when your sd has more memory than your reader is able to process. The solution is normally to buy a new up to date card reader.

My original [old] card reader works fine and reads small cards (less than 2gb )but it can't handle an 8gb or bigger card.

Thank you so much Volt. My memory card is 64 gb Guess I will be looking for a reader then that is an upgrade to what I currently have. Is there a brand that is better then others for reading larger cards?

I don't know that one brand is inherently better than another. I'd go on the cheap side since they seem to need to be upgraded rather often.

Sorry but I don't know anything else to try. Did you shoot in jpg or raw? If you shot in raw do you have a program that can read that file type?

Don't you have the cord to hook your camera up to the computer and load them that way?

Your SD card is probably class 10 and needs a reader capable of reading the higher capacity card. If you have another class 10 card have Best Buy read that card or one they have on hand to verify it's compatability, when you return the old one.

Rebel knows more about electronic stuff than I do. So hope his ideas help.
My other middle of the night thought is to try the card and reader in another computer.

Thank you guys!
Rebel-the new reader I bought that was recommended, was one that reads xc also.
When I searched to look for class 10 memory cards,my card is right there in the images that pop up lol. Shouldn't Best Buy know these things? lol What type of a reader do you recomend Rebel?

At the moment I'm using a Kingston USB 3.0 READER...... My USB 2.0 Kingston cheapie will read higher capacity cards when plugged into my computer; but won't recognize anything above 8 GB when plugged into my car radio. If your reader is XC compliant it should have been able to read it, I had a brand new card corrupt on me after only about 24 shots fortunately nothing important was lost. Seems to be the only safe bet is to download the images through the camera it's possible the camera formatted the card incorrectly and the camera's tolerances are sensitive enough to read it.

Before making another trip to BestBuy, I'd do a direct connect from the camera via the supplied USB cable.

Did you ever figure it out?

Jennifer~
I think a photography class should be a requirement in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it.
