My 50mm lens used to work fine, but now I'm getting some weird light flares whenever I shoot anything involving a direct light source (notably, birthday cake candles and Christmas tree lights!) I get one flare-type thing for each light source in the photo. Here's a sample image to show what I mean. Is this a scratch on the lens? Dust inside of it? Any ideas??

Looks like a reflection ...... possibly from a filter. Not a scratch or any damage. Try some test shots with filter removed to see if that works. BTW thse reflections caneasily be repaired in photoshop or PS Elements.

Thanks... there is indeed a filter on the lens. I will try some test shots with a candle without the filter to see if the problem goes away. Glad to hear it's probably not something more serious!

What is the easiest way to remove in PS? I've been letting the Content Aware tool fill in these spots but then it always requires a bit of manual fiddling to make it look natural... is there a better way?

You could try using the patch tool. It's a bit iffy when the flare lands on a boarder (like where his shirt meets the back of the chair) but should be pretty easy for the flares that land in the middle of an area, like right on the chair or totally on his shirt.

Thanks for posting this problem! I have had that happen to me also. I'll have to remember to remove the filter next time. Great shot btw!
