Link to WF13 Sablona Challenge blog post with details & gallery of entries
Link to WF13 Master Thread of all WF13 challenges

This challenge celebrates that I am on the inaugural Design Team at Artistcellar.com!

Click here http://youtu.be/F42ByB3pwkM to see a video I made about using stencils and Distress Stains to make patterned paper.

This challenge is to use a stencil to create a background (like patterned paper, but it doesn't have to be) AND use at least one stamp in a single NEW project of your choice:
  • When you upload your project check the box for this challenge and use WF13 in your project title.
  • Post a link to your project in the gallery on THIS thread.
  • Leave Pea Praise for at least one other participant in this challenge.
  • You may enter as many times as you want and you may combine with other challenges EXCEPT other stencil challenges.
  • If you enter you are also giving me permission to share your winning project on my blog, Gaal Creative.
  • Extra credit if you use one or more stencils from Artistcellar.com or TWO or more other (non-stencil) products from Artistcellar.com. (Please specify which ones here when you post a link to your project.)
  • See the rest of the details on the blog post.

Here are my samples: WF13 Sablona Challenge Samples

I will select a random winner from all qualified entries to receive a 6x6 stencil of their choice from Artistcellar.com.

If you have any questions, please ask them here!

Anne, thank you for the video tutorial. (It was fun hearing your voice.) I have a few Distress Stains that I haven't tried out yet, and I would have thought them too thin to use with stencils. I was surprised and delighted to see what a great design you made with them.

This is going to be a fun challenge!

Daria

ETA: I love your sample pieces. Would you believe that my favorites are the two tags you made with left-over ink on the stencils!

I hope you can see from my samples that some tries you will get "messier" results than others. I happen to like the messy ones just as much - but not everyone does. If you want cleaner results, try to use less Distress Stain - or try another way of adding color like Distress Inks, mists or sprays, colored pencils, etc.

What a great video! I love your projects. I will have to buy a stencil, but I am going to try to do this challenge, perhaps with home made sprays, as I don't have any stains or sprays.

Heidi, do you have any die cuts? If so, use your die cuts to cut a piece of copy paper and use it as your stencil. No need to go out and buy something! Homemade stencils are acceptable.

I have the 5 stained-glass stencils from ArtistCellar that you rak'd to me. Hopefully I'll get a chance to use them for your challenge.

Fun challenge, as usual!

Anne, I improvised using daubers and ink in place of the distress ink applicators. I had fun with it, made two cards and still have paper to make at least one more. Thanks again for hosting!

Hi, Marshia! Love your improvisations!

There is no requirement to use Distress Stains. You can use your stencil in any way you want to create a background! Have fun!

I made a birthday card for my 3 year old nephew. Probably a little artsy for him, but it gave me a circus-y impression!

I scraped gesso through my stencil with a plastic palette knife. After letting it dry overnight, I sprayed with Dylusions inks. One surprise I had was that I used the same blue ink over the gessoed watercolor paper as I did on SU white paper for a mat, and it looks more turquoise on the watercolor paper. Probably because the wc paper absorbed better, and there was also some red spray on it. Definitely not a perfect, neat stencil impression but I had a lot of fun with it!

I learned the gesso technique at an art journaling class.

Thanks for the challenge Anne!

ETA: The stencil, spray inks and gesso are available at Artistcellar, although I have to admit, I found them at my LSS. However, I did find a stencil on Artistcellar that I have been looking all over for, so I'm sure I'll be placing an order! Congrats Anne for your place on the design team!

I spent a while trying this out last night with my home-made punch stencils and it didn't work too well - lots of ugly seepage.

So it's on the back burner at the moment!

Still had fun though, so that's the main thing!

Here is my card for this challenge. I did purchase a stencil, and I don't regret it. I also made my own glimmer mist according to Jan's instructions (it is in the WF13 Master Thread).

Christmas Card

This is really fun. I can see myself making mists and using stencils more now. I used to really dislike mists, so this is a big change for me! lol

I am having so much fun seeing what everyone creates!

Christin, I'm sorry your first attempt didn't work out. With a homemade stencil out of regular paper, you might want to try a drier method for applying color, like outlining with pen and painting it or coloring it with markers, or applying Distress Ink with a blending tool and foam.

I am glad that you had fun and hope you will give it another try!

I'm sure your stenciled background is more than worthy, Daria!

While I was creating my first stenciled entry I went ahead and played some more.
I posted a Congrats card for the challenge. I have another image to add but 2peas wasn't cooperating, I'll try later. It just shows more glimmer.

This time I scraped perfect pearls through a stencil. I have a tip. Be careful removing the stencil, in a few places it took a little of the top layer of watercolor paper off.

OK. I'm posting mine. I couldn't go to bed until it was finished. My daughter kept telling me what time it was, but she gave up a bit after midnight.

I am having such a good time with the challenges. I love all the ink and paints. I just posted to Cindi's challenge and mentioned that I haven't used my Stamp Zia Sprays in a very long time. What's really cool is that even when what I make isn't all that great, it still looks good (to me) when it's cut down and used on a card.

My Card

Thank you so much for the challenge, Anne.

I always love how much I learn during our challenge events! After carefully placing distress stains through my Mini Stripes stencil my excitement quickly dissipated as I saw the final result was less than stellar compared to my expectations. But then I thought why would I have such expectations when Anne clearly said this process is potentially messy both for me and possibly the result too.

Then I recalled Cindi (iring) mentioning in an early gallery post that she was making a technique journal. Yes, a technique journal was my light bulb moment as I thought how I could keep examples and notes on what works in using specific techniques and what doesn't so I can achieve repeatable results that I do like. After all my memory is not going to track all of the details like it once did LOL! So I am starting right now. HERE is my card.
Many thanks Anne and Cindi for sharing your new ideas!

While the board is having it's hiccups I found it easier to stay with this challenge where I know the details...AND I just couldn't move on until I tried embossing paste with these plastic stencils. The translucent paste easily accepted the silver paint and I achieved some nicely textured results with minimal seepage.

Thanks for all the fun Anne!

Thank you for the challenge.

The only stencils that I have are brass stencils and so went with that, but am interested in finding out about the newer stencils and will be doing some research on them. This year I a trying not to buy as I have so much stuff and trying to make do with what I have.

Where did the word Sablona come from and what does it mean, I tried to look it up on the web, didn't have much luck.

I like my little dragon project and he will grow into a card soon. dragon

As I mentioned at the top of the blog post, Sablona is pronounced shah-blow-na and it is the Slovak word for stencil! (It has accent marks on it, which you can see on the blog post.)

Anne, I super duper this challenge.

I decided to make a stencil with my cricut and was really pleased with how it turned out. I ended up making one background with distress inks and one with alcohol inks on vellum. I havent finished the card yet with the alcohol ink background. I'll post it to when I get it finished. But for now here's the distress ink background card.

After starting two projects which went down in flames...or more like went down in messy, muddy, blahness,I did finally get something finished for this challenge and now I can't get it to upload to the gallery...oh well maybe it wasn't meant to be.

I'll try again later tonight and if it won't work then I'll have to accept that this challenge was just not for me, this time around.

Wowzers! Let me start by saying what a blast it has been to see what everyone has created! I am so grateful that I am choosing by random draw, because I would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite! There are so many terrific cards for this challenge! (see them in the gallery here)

And I am so grateful to all of you who used stencils and other products available at Artistcellar.com in your projects. So many of you earned extra entries! A total of 31 entries for the random draw.

{There was one person, who submitted two cards, but who did not leave a description or Pea Praise for others, who was not included for the random draw. Wooo-hooo! Congratulations ladies!

Please enjoy the process of shopping for a single stencil valued at up to $4.99 from Artistcellar.com - and then PeaMail me to tell me which stencil you'd like, as it will be coming from my own pocket, and your snail mail address. Thank you!
