Hi,
I am new to this stamping thing and I am having problems! When I try to stamp stamp with individual letter to make a word, like MOM even I cannot get them straight, I've drawn a light line with a pencil even to try to guide me, but that doesn't work. Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem? I have wasted so many cards because of this it's ridiculous!!! Please help me!
Thank you,
Tiffany | |

You are not alone with this problem. That's why people often purposely place the letters so that the word ends up looking "artistically" askew. LOL.
You might try drawing a line on the block instead of the paper. Then you could place each letter on that line. Stamp it on scrap paper to see if you need to make adjustments before stamping it onto your project.
Some blocks come pre-printed with grid lines. Maybe you could invest in one of those.
Good luck!

Tiffany. Welcome & I hearya about the str8 letters. I avoid using alphabet stamps like the plague, but Daria's advice is good way to start.
Are your letter stamps rubber or clear? |

Daria and Daniel obviously have a direct line to my brain cause I would have said those exact same things!
My only other advice is to do the "final" stamping onto a strip of CS to artistically attach to the card - not to do it directly onto the card itself. |

LOL, Christin! Don't know about Daria, but I'm telepathic--as well as psychopathic, but that's a different topic.
Excellent idea to do the word as a separate stamped piece. 'Kills' 2 birds with 1 rock...
1. You gain skill at stamping letters
2. You mess up fewer pieces.

Don't fret, wooden alpha stamps are just plain difficult to use! Use a light touch when stamping and definitely don't stamp directly on your card/item/etc. Use a strip of cardstock or some other way so that when you mess up, you can try try again without pulling your hair out.
I also second the idea of stamping them in a funky way on purpose. |

I have the same problem with wooden alpha stamps. They're a real pain! I've used a piece of scrap cardstock to help line mine up and it works most of the time. Another tip is to find the center of the word you want to stamp and stamp that letter first and then stamp the rest of the letters.
And this is more of an enabling tip
I did invest in a set of lawn fawn alpha stamps and they are AWESOME!!!
They're one of my favorite stamp companies and after watching a YouTube video on their alphas, I ordered some.
2p's store carries them. They come in lots of nice fonts, there's extra vowels so its helpful when spelling out greetings. And my favorite part- the letters are in blocks and the blocks are all of the same size so it's very easy to line up and get straight lettering. |

I must be missing a post on this thread. I didn't read where you were using 'wood' alphas, Tiffany. If your letter stamps are indeed mounted ones, I urge you to unmount them.
I am not anti-mounted stamps, but when it comes to letters? UMS (unmounted stamps) are your best option. And trust me, I rarely use the B-word for anything. |

Daniel has a point. You could unmount the alphas and then line them up on your clear block and then they would be lined up when you stamp.
You might also consider a clear set. I hear raving reviews of Lawn Fawn's alpha sets in terms of how easy they are to line up |

I agree on getting the clear sets for alphabets. I can't imagine trying to line up wood block letters! What a pain!
Sorry I am no help! |

For wood alpha stamps, you could also try to rubber band them together or use washi tape to tape them together. If clear, I love the Fiskars stamp press. You can line all the clear or cling alphas along the grid. |

Are you telling me that stamped letters are SUPPOSED to be lined up straight?! |

You need a stamp a majig. You stamp the image onto a piece of plastic then you use the plastic to line it up with the position you need. It comes with a kind of set square to position the plastic and the image. Google a video on YouTube. It is a stampers best friend. |
