I just came home from a tag sale that has new, unused Tim Holtz Distress Stain in bottles. It's nothing I've ever used before and don't know if I should be going back to the tag sale. I bought two bottles.

My questions for you are: How do I use them? What colors would I like most? What is a reasonable price?

Thanks peas. I am going to post this on the scrapping board too in case there isn't much activity on the stamping board today.

I use my stains to dye ribbon, to get intense colors when making flowers, use them with a water brush to paint with, swish them on my craft mat and spritz with water, lay my card stock in the stains, smoosh around to make backgrounds.

I am not sure of the price because I get mine with coupons, probably around $3.

I have almost all the colors. It depends on what you are using them for. brighter colors for flowers, any color for ribbon and backgrounds.

Hope this helps!

Stamp Willy's provided a great response above. Here are a few more details:

Distress ink and stains are available in the same colors but made with different formulas so they can go on the paper in different ways. The fluid distress stains have dauber tops to release the fluid stain making them great to cover large areas quickly. Fabulous for fast translucent backgrounds. Different colors can be placed over top of one another without contaminating the bottle's color...just rub the 2nd color off of the foam onto paper.

The difference between distress products is mostly about how you like to apply color to your paper. And the different techniques you can use with each. Stains can also be used for coloring stencils.

The dauber tops can also be popped off so the fluid can be put also be used in mister bottles.

Distress colors are all made to compliment one another. If one's initial goal is to buy a beginning set I would recommend considering the a mix of primary colors and some neutrals with these 12 colors-Vintage Photo, Shabby Shutters, Peeled Paint, Broken China, Tumbled Glass,Barn Door, Wild Honey, Crushed Olive, Mustard Seed, Fired Brick, Worn Lipstick, Tea Dye, Old Paper.

Happy stamping!

stampwilly and Far North,

Thank you so much for your help. The two of you are awesome peas. I really appreciate it. I just got back home after going back to that tag sale. I got a bunch of the stains. I'm pretty excited.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering the same thing (how to use stains)because I bought them at an estate sale for a whopping $8 for 20 bottles!! Great ideas, Stampwilly and Jan!!

I want to thank you both for the answers you provided as well. I am just starting out on my inky journeys.
I liked the clear explanations too.

Thanks

EastCoastPea,

It was a dream-come-true estate sale. I missed the first day, so who knows what I missed. But, it was 50% off everything the second day. I found a set of 40 distress inks with refills and blending tools with 2 extended stands...all for about $20. I won't need to buy cardstock for a LONG time. There was a table full of Bazzill/Prism 12x12 cardstock. Most of the packages were new and had either 25 or 50 sheets. Because I bought them out, they sold them to me for $1 a pack. I bought about 115 packs of paper and also a ream of 1000 white 12x12 100# cardstock. And finally, I bought 100 acrylic 12x12 paper trays for 35 cents each. I looked online and these trays cost $8 new.

I'm a stamper/cardmaker only. I'm always looking for craft sales with stamps, but this sale didn't have many stamps...only bought 6 stamps. I think most of the stamps were gone by the first day.

It was a blessing to have found all the stuff I did.

Jan,

Work has been keeping me pretty busy, so all I've had time to do is put my new goodies away and gawk at them. LOL! I hate it when work interferes with my crafty time, but alas....that's what pays for my addiction. LOL!! Hopefully, I'll get some free time soon and that I can enter some of the challenges I've longing to participate in.

EastCoastPea,

I would love to see your projects...I need all the inspiration I can get.

bjlee717,
I'm still at the looking at them and sorting them phase. It turns out that I bought some duplicates. If I find out, from the post office, that they can be shipped (I'm not sure if they can because of the liquid) I might try to sell the duplicates on the sale/trade board. Once the kids are out of school for the summer I hope to start using them.
