I always order matte... from Costco. First, I love the bit of texture. Second, when scrapping, I seem to "touch" the photos a lot... not intentionally, but I might lay my hand on the photo while adding a rub-on, or get a finger print on it while pressing it down for the adhesive to stick. The glossy photos take every little "touch" and I can't get the finger prints off, while the matte photos can be touched all day long and you won't ever see anything. Long story short, the matte photos are more "forgiving" for clumsy scrappers like me!
Great question!

I used to always do matte but I recently switched to glossy at home prints. I think they just look so much more professional. (it may have nothing to do with the paper and that I just started taking better pictures, lol). I have a cloth from Creative Memories that I use to wipe off any finger prints that I may have from touching the photo. Although, once they are adhered, I very rarely touch them.
You are right about taking good photos part. I don't notice a difference when I take the photos during the day but when I need to take one at night with available lighting in the house it can be a pain.
What works for me is I use my overhead lighting and turn my LO upside down. I then fix the color cast in PSE and obviously rotate it correctly. Not perfect but has worked to meet a deadline! HTH! |

I've always ordered glossy prints. They seem to have a much crisper look to them than the matte prints, even though the finger print issue is a pain.
At home I've been printing a mix - most of my old heritage photos are reprinted in satin finish (not quite as flat as matte). |

I don't order any of my photos, but when I print from home, I always do matte paper, rather than glossy. I just love the color saturation much more. |

I used to always do glossy until I got some matte by accident... I don't know exactly why but I like matte better. |

I think I go in phases. I was ordering the matte at Costco, I do like that look a whole lot and I like that they are easier to handle. I mostly print my own now and I use a Smooth Pearl paper by Ilford and I absolutely love that stuff! |

Matte from Costco Plus, matte tends to hide some photography errors. Which can sometimes be a good thing... |

I'm another one who loves the matte/lustre finish from Costco. I accidentally ordered glossy once and I was so ticked! lol! |

If I print at home, I mostly use glossy, the photo paper is much less expensive than matte, but if I order online I always do matte.
I think matte looks more professional and alot more forgiving than glossy, that said, glossy seems crisper to me.
Personal preferrence I think.

I print from home and use a satin, pearl or luster finish; it's kind of like a matte with a sheen to it. Love the way it looks, feels and is very forgiving of fingers and smudges. |

i always order matte but when i print at home, it's glossy. i like the matte photos much more but honestly, it really isn't that much of a big deal to me- if the picture is beautiful, i am happy!
i wish we had a costco here, what do they print on?

I prefer matte. As some have mentioned, glossy pics tend to be less forgiving in terms of fingerprints. I think the "gloss" can sometimes upstage a page, too. |

i order matte at Costco, at home i print on lustre/matte photo paper. i do have some glossy, but it's rare i use it. plus, it's easier to machine stitch on matte photos, too! |
