Can anyone explain to me the advantages of Digital Scrapbooking? How is it different from other creative scrapbooking? Are there any disadvantages?

- Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the digi board!
Digi scrapbooking has lots of advantages...
takes up less space, can be done on the go, you buy a paper once and it can be resized recoloured, cut and then you still have the original to use again. Some people find it cheaper than paper scrapping although you can still spend lots on kits
its less mess and if you have kids around its easy to just hit save and come back to work on it later without having to clean up.
my favourite advantage is that a printed bound digital book takes up WAY less space than my paper albums.

Its just like paper scrapping you can be just as creative the possibilities for pages are endless just like in paper scrapping.

Disadvantages, some people miss the actually glue and paper but you can do hybrid scrapping, digital pages with other embellishments glued on after you print the page. There can be a learning curve depending on what program you digital scrap with, most people use photoshop elements to scrap and it can take a while to get comfortable with the program but there are tons of tutorials out there for the programs.

I'm sure I missed stuff but if you have any other questions ask away

Shan summed it up nicely. Another advantage is that it's portable. I take my laptop with me on trips and scrap in airports and on planes! I also take it to work and scrap on my lunch hour. Love digital!

For me, the advantage of digital over traditional is strictly creative one. Almost anything I imagine, I can create digitally, without being limited by what I can buy at my LSS or scrounge up around my house. If I want my background to be water, or sand, or sky... easy to do. Try gluing water to a layout! LOL! If I want to do a layout about my daughter's doll, I can photograph it and digitally extract it, and add it to my layout. I wouldn't put a real doll in a layout!

I also love the fact that I can create effects digitally that I couldn't possibly do traditionally. If I wanted to digitally 'mist' or 'ink' something, it's easy to do. But I couldn't create an artistically filtered photo background with overlapping transparent halftone blocks on a traditional layout, without doing that first in Photoshop, then printing and glueing it on the page. So, for me, digital is just such a limitless source of fun and creativity, and I don't plan on stopping until my hands can no longer manage a keyboard or trackpad!

I agree with all that has been said. Except... I am not as good as Steph, so I'm not yet at the place where I can do EVERYTING I imagine.

One drawback for me is that I procrastinate about getting pages printed. I've hardly printed any, because we don't have any local places. I would need to use Persnickety Prints and have them mailed to me. We just look at them on the computer when we want to see them. Sometimes I miss paper, embellies, ink... But when I do I make some cards or something.

When my kids move out, I may just give them a usb flash drive (or whatever the new technology is)with all the layouts they want. It will take up less space than regular scrapbooks.

There you go, Jan - you took your own drawback and made an advantage.

I will go with what everyone else has said - plus for me, with traditional product I hoarded my favorite stuff because I didn't want it to be gone. So, by the time I used it, it wasn't my favorite anymore. Never ever an issue with digital.

Oh, I'm sooooooo bad at having pages printed! I occasionally have them printed for gifts- I have them framed, and I've done a few albums, but mostly they just sit on my computer! Love the idea of giving the kids a flash drive!

I agree with all that has been said. Except... I am not as good as Steph, so I'm not yet at the place where I can do EVERYTING I imagine.

Notice I said almost everything I can imagine!

I love that you can UNDO. Don't like something... just delete it and redo it.

I like to swap out different papers by clipping them to layers to see which design I like better. You can also do this with photos. I can't imagine doing the cropping and photo readjustment I do digitally with paper.

I also get all my layouts printed 12x12 and keep them in a top loading binder. It's easy to save as a JPG and then upload to a printing site and order.

Good summary by all but something they missed.

With Digital you can make copies of your pages (as many as you want) to give to family, for different kids' photobooks, or to replace one that might have gotten damaged)and you can make copies in any size as long as you start with a larger original (12 x12) you can print it 12x12, 8x8, 6x6, or less. Try that with traditional paper pages.

similar to what has been said, it's definitely easier to upload and share layouts since they are already in the correct format. Even though I'm a long time "Pea" I never uploaded a paper layout because I didn't have a 12" scanner and taking a photo of a layout never looked right to me.

Just a few minutes ago I was working on a page and thought about this thread - although I was happy with the overall layout composition - it didn't "feel" right. In the end I resized one of the patterned papers and it made all the difference. Turns out it needs a slightly smaller scale paper - if I had already cut a piece of paper for a traditional layout, it is doubtful I would have changed it. So, it would still be a good layout with something I wasn't happy with about it. OR, although unlikely, I would have had to find new coordinating paper and cut again, wasting the first paper piece. Ahhh, digital!

Oh well, with all that's been said, I have enough reason now to keep practicing and trying digital scrapbooking. All of you guys can be a real source of inspiration. Thanks everyone!

Oh! Oh! Pick me! Pick me! I got this! I wrote a whole article about it you are welcome to read-- Ten Reasons to Go Digital. I am way more passionate about digital than I ever was about paper! I'm sure a lot of my reasons are the same as those listed above, but I thought I'd share!

The above posts sum it up pretty well. One other advantage of digital for me is that I can color match my paper and elements with my photos. It is so easy to change the color of most, that I never have to worry about not having the right shade of a color like I did when I was using mostly paper.

Lots of good reasons given already. For me, coming from a 10 yr paper scrap background and trying out digi I was overwhelmed (or should I say underwhelmed) when I first tried getting into it a few years ago. I just couldn't get the hang of it and didn't like the pages I was creating. I recently got into it again and now it's like a fog has lifted, I am having fun, I am learning new techniques, I am not intimidated at all, if I don't now how to do something...I ask. What made me decide to jump ship permanently from paper scrapbooking?....the cost, the lack of mess, the opportunity for more creativity and don't forget one of the best things...the online shopping for digi stuff which is sooooo addicting!
