I posted this on the GS board, b/c it seems to have a little more traffic, but you ladies over here probably have more info.

I am thinking about doing some digital scrapping. I am definitely an "old school" paper scrapper and really enjoy creating pages with my hands, but I wouldn't mind doing some digital stuff as well.

I really like some pages I saw done with the Stampin Up program, but I have some general questions first. TIA for any answers!

1. If I buy a digital program such as Stampin Up or Close to My Heart, am I tied to their digital content only? Or can I integrate other digital kits into my layouts?

2. If I am using another digital program, can I use the "content discs" from Stampin Up for the backgrounds and elements?

3. Can I just use Photoshop to create pages? If so, can I use most kits with it?

4. Where do you print your 12 x 12 layouts, and what is the cost?

5. Can you create you own "digital embellishments" by scanning a piece of memorabilia (buttons, ticket stubs, etc.) and putting them into the layouts? (I don't want to just take a picture b/c I don't want any "background" around the item.)

6. If I create layouts in a digital program that I own, can I upload them to photobooks at places like Snapfish? Or do I have to create my photobook on their site?

Number 6 is probably the biggest reason I would like to try digital. When I do some special occassion books, I would like to do duplicates, and this would be the easiest way LOL! For instance, I want to do my DD's graduation book from last spring, but I would like to keep a copy for me as well. I don't want to do it twice.

I am sooooo confused!

Oh, and please feel free to share any advice re: your preferred digi program.

Thanks!

1. If I buy a digital program such as Stampin Up or Close to My Heart, am I tied to their digital content only? Or can I integrate other digital kits into my layouts? You would need to check the software for answers to this question. Most digital kits contain jpg and png files. If these programs can import those types of images, you are all set.

2. If I am using another digital program, can I use the "content discs" from Stampin Up for the backgrounds and elements? Again, you would have to check the content disks to see if it is something that can be imported by other programs...jpgs and pngs. Some disks like that are protected from use with other programs to protect the brand.

3. Can I just use Photoshop to create pages? If so, can I use most kits with it? Absolutely. That is how I do everything. Most of the kits here at Two Peas are created with Photoshop and Photoshop Elements in mind.

4. Where do you print your 12 x 12 layouts, and what is the cost? Persnickity Prints and they have outstanding sales. Great pricing as well. Check out their site for current pricing.

5. Can you create you own "digital embellishments" by scanning a piece of memorabilia (buttons, ticket stubs, etc.) and putting them into the layouts? (I don't want to just take a picture b/c I don't want any "background" around the item.) I do this a lot as I love vintage ephemera. You can scan it at a high resolution, then remove the background with Photoshop. Save it as a png and use it in your layouts.

6. If I create layouts in a digital program that I own, can I upload them to photobooks at places like Snapfish? Or do I have to create my photobook on their site? Each site is different. Most, you can upload your layouts to, and create a book out of layouts that you have on your computer. Hope this helps!!

You are less confused than you think you are, because those questions are all very on point! I believe that both Stampin' Up and CM have proprietary software that you cannot mix with other programs. I looked at Stampin' Up's digital line when it first came out, and was completely turned off by the fact that I would not be able to use their images in another program. However, most digi scrappers use PSE or CS (Photoshop), as Em mentioned, and both programs are very versatile.

Being able to re-produce a book in multiple copies is one of the very best parts about digital! You will love it.

Hi,
I have My digital studio 2 from Stampin' UP and LOVE IT.( I am not just saying it because I am a demo)It is really easy to use. I also use Photoshop, mostly for things like extractions, editing papers/ creating elements.

1. You can use any digital content you want in MDS 2, I use alot of 2peas in MDS and have no problems.

2. You can also buy SU digital content and use in any program you want.

3. You can use any digital kit in Photoshop and you can make pages. ( I am doing Project life in PS and 52 weeks in MDS 2.)

4. I use shutterfly(12x12 hardcover photo book 54.99) and If I want just a couple pages I use SU (2.95 per 12x12 page/ hardcover photo book 12x12 54.95). Shutterfly has sales all the time so you can get a better price.

Oh thanks for clarifying this! I was mistaken about that, good to know!

It looks like you've gotten a lot of good advice and suggestions for those who came before me.

But I'll address a couple of questions.
Regarding scanning: you mentioned that you want to scan objects so you won't have a background to remove. As Emily mentioned, you will still have to remove the background. Whatever is behind the object you are scanning: the scanner lid, or dark background with an open scanner, has to be removed digitally.
I scan a lot of things to create my layouts, and I use a combination of photography and scanning. If the object is flat like a ticket, document, photo, book, small object, etc. I scan. But I also photograph a lot of less flat things to extract and use on my layouts. If possible, I simply pose the object against a plain background of some kind, making it easier to extract.

I have my 12x12 or 8x8 layouts printed at Costco. The cost is $2.99 for a 12x12, and $1.49 for 8x8. PLUS you can have it in an hour, and you don't have to pay any shipping. But if you don't have a Costco near you, or are not a member, there are lots of other great options.

I get my layouts printed at Scrapbooks to Share (sbtoshare.com). I wait until they send out a coupon (pretty regularly) and then get pages printed for usually $1.50 per sheet. I get the lighter paper (not the cardstock) as a filled album can get quite heavy. The prints come out beautifully and you can get them full bleed or with a white trim around them which ensures nothing gets cut off.

I think most everyone answered your quetions probably. I am a big Shutterfly fan. I use PSE to make my LOs and then upload them to Shutterfly to get Photobooks made.
