I've been using PSE7 happily for several years now with no real desire or need to upgrade until today. Today Windows did one of their stealth no warning critical upgrades (you know the type where they hijack your computer and shut everything down before you can save anything). And when it was all over, my antivirus software was deactivated (had to reset and rerun that) and my PSE wouldn't recognize its licensing and thus refused to open. I went online and found 8 different solutions to fix the problem (none worked). I tried restoring the computer back to an earlier date only to get the critical blue screen of death error and a nonsuccessful restore. I contacted Adobe for customer service support and after giving them my serial number which took me all day to find, was told they can't help me because they don't support PSE7 any more. PSE9 is the oldest they support. Told me to contact the company I downloaded it from, but of course, they are no longer in business. So I'm photo-editing, digi scrapbooking software deficient at the moment.
Frustrating. I will need to uninstall my PSE7 manually as the software's uninstall nor my windows uninstall work. This will take me some time as it is a bit tedious. Only after i'm successful doing that, will I be able to install another PSE program.
Should I buy PSE7 again (~$20) since i'm used to it, or should I upgrade to 9, 10 or 11? each one adds about $10 to the price tag. I might try to download the trial version of 11 to test it out but really I can't afford to buy any of these yet. Too many other expenses calling my name in the near future.
Not sure what I'm going to do instead of scrapping other than fight with my computer.
One minute PSE was working (enter windows update) and then it wasn't. I think I need to mourn the loss and put pSE7 to rest before I can move on.

Ugh that's awful! And one reason why I have all automatic updates turned off (after a similarly dreadful scenario on my desktop several years ago).
I don't know, if your computer doesn't recognise the PSE7 you already have, would it be any different with a newly purchased copy of the same? If not then it's money right down the drain. If PSE9 is the earliest they will offer support on then I would have to say minimally that to buy new. If you don't want the bells and whistles offered by 10/11 (text path, actions are the main ones that apply to digi scrapping) then 9 should do, but if the difference between 9 and 11 is only $20 then I'd try to swing for that.
I know what it's like for every penny to count though so it does really depend on your personal situation.

I feel your pain. I did what Suzanne did, and turned off all the automatic updates a few years ago. Then I missed some critical update and my PC flat-lined. The tech guy said, um, you actually do need the automatic updates, it's to protect you. From what, having the computer shut itself off? This is why I got a Mac, but I know that's not a solution available to you at the moment.
I upgraded from PSE5 to PSE9 and the from PSE9 to PSE11. The main difference with version 11 is the ability to easily install actions and styles. For me, that was a HUGE selling point and worth the extra cost. (Plus, if you buy the box at Costco it comes with a disc of digital scrapbooking goodies. Worth it.) But, that said, I was perfectly happy with PSE9, I just couldn't use any styles because they were too difficult to install.
Whatever you decide, let us know when the memorial service is for your PSE7 so we can help you mourn. It's an awful feeling when the computer gets hijacked by the very thing that is supposed to be "protecting" it. |

Lol well it was the automatic update (Service Pack 2 for Windows XP) that caused my Desktop to 'flatline' (love that term). Seems whichever way you play it you're going to be stuffed at some point!
I have PSE9 I could let you have for cost of shipping, but I don't know if I need to de-register it or something. It was only installed on one machine (this laptop) and I have now uninstalled it since having PSE11, but don't know if Adobe have any other restrictions that have to be overcome before passing on their software.

I'm not certain how to advise you (I have PSE11 bought at 50 percent) but I wanted to add I am sorry this happened to you. I would be frustrated beyond belief. |

I have 11 and it was WELL WORTH the bucks just to get the load actions upgrade! I love that part of it. Sorry that happened Debi. Hope you get it straightened out!! |

So sorry to hear this Debi - what a total pain.
I upgraded from PSE 6 to PSE9 and loved the addition of layer masks. I think it would be a greater advantage to upgrade to a higher level if and when you can. |

Boo!! I am so sorry. I have 10 at home and 11 at work, that I use for testing only, as I use PS most of the time. 11 may be worth it just for what Deanna said. Gotta love those actions!! |

That is such a bummer, Deb... I feel your pain!
I don't have anything different to contribute, just hope you get PSE up & running soon. I hope you end up getting PSE11- I think you'll have fun with the new features. |

Ugh! I feel bad for you. I'm so glad my DH doesn't have ours automatically update.
I wouldn't go back to PSE 7. Like fruitysuet said, you may have issues with it. I went from PSE 4 to PSE 10 about a month ago. So far I'm enjoying it but haven't even begun to play with all the features, including layer masks.
I say "go for it" with installing GIMP. Since it's free, if you don't like it, you can always delete it. |

Sorry about your experience! I upgraded from 8 to 11 over the holiday. (Actually, if I am to be totally honest I upgraded from 5 to 11 as I never really transitioned fully to 8). But I am finding that PSE Org in 11 is very different, thus I have not
copied all my digi scrap item into it...I honestly don't know that I ever will...totally bummed about that. Good luck with your decision! | |
