Hello again, everyone!

Welcome to Part 1 of Week 4 of our class. The first project/video/pdf for this week is up HERE .

This week focuses on Distress Crackle Paint from Ranger. Today's video talks about the basics along with adding color.

And, of course, we need prizes! Each week we will offer a challenge. Just play along and we will pick a winner of some prizes from Hero Arts and Ranger. Please post your project by Sunday, 7/12 at 11pmEDT.

The challenge for this week is to use any of the techniques presented in the videos/projects for crackle paint. You can use any products, but we would love to see some Ranger and Hero Arts! (Both companies donated a TON of prizes.) When putting them in the Gallery, don't forget to click the appropriate box indicating your project is part of the Thinking Inking Class, Week 4.

NOTE: If you don't have Distress Crackle Paint and are unsure it is for you, be sure to watch the videos. It is a fun product! If you don't have any (yet) to use, you can do other paint techniques for the challenge. I don't want anyone left out.

Also, please link your project here on this thread so that everyone can see it.

Very cool! Another fab video!
I don't have any of the crackle paints, but I do like the look of the small cracks, it's great to know that you can control that part of it!

I'm heading out to pick up some pictures today, I might just have to stop at my LSS!

Thanks Jennifer!

Cool look!

Quick question: Is it possible to put too much paint on? If so, will it crack so much that it falls off?

Thanks and I'm really enjoying these classes!

I thought I'd share a tip for the antiquing (accenting cracks and crevices such as those made by the crackle paint) process demonstrated in this video. In addition to the supplies listed in the video/PDF, you'll need some sort of clear topcoat. You could use spray or brush-on varnish, or Mod Podge. You could probably even use Glossy / Matte Accents (Ranger Industries) or Diamond Glaze (JudiKins), brushed on, but please realize that I haven't tried those products yet.

When the crackle paint is completely dry, apply a thin, even layer of your chosen topcoat. Allow to dry, then apply the accent color that you want in the cracks. Continue as instructed in the video.

The topcoat adds an extra step, but it also acts as a barrier between the original paint layer and the accent layer, protecting the original color and adding a certain "slippery-ness" that makes the accent / antiquing color easier to remove. This gives you, the creator, a bit more control over the antiquing process.

HTH. Enjoy.

ha... you bet me to that - i am showing that on another video.

if you go realllly thick, it will take awhile to dry. and it will chip off easier. however, i normally don't have issues with it and i don't normally seal it.

if you want to seal, you can use ranger's glossy accents as a topcoat. they sell it here. (and that is what i will show on friday. )

Jennifer:

I have no crackle paint, but I've got paint & Ranger Crackle Medium. It'll be a two-step process for me, but I should have some time to play
later this week. Right now, I'm still doing laundry & cleaning up after house guests.

Thanks for another great video.

just wondering - can you paint a base coat color on your item first, let it dry, and then the crackle paint, and get the same effect with the accent color in the cracks?

Thanks for another great video Jennifer. Your close ups are amazing and REALLY show the detail and thickness wonderfully.

I only have one colour of ranger crackle paint (at the moment! ) but keen to get it out and use it now.

And LOVE that QK die shape set- you are SO BAD for my budget, I'm never going to save up enough for a new camera unless I stay completely away from you!

Thanks Jennifer, many thanks for such a terrific series!!!
This week I learned that crackle painted is a lot easier to use on grungeboard and chipboard than paper flowers...but I still like the outcome on the super large flower.

Printing the Thinking Inking week 4 PDF is a problem, text and pictures of flowers are magnified so that I only get a small portion of text and pictures on a page. Don't know if it is because I have a mac and I can't seem to resolve the problem. Any help would be appreciated. First two weeks printed fine, problem started last week.

I was making a Christmas card for my Christmas in July Challenge and really needed something special. Jennifer, your video came to mind. I could get used to doing this--so much fun. I used very little paint so the lines are faint, but they're there. Next time I'll use just a little more paint. I was determined to wait until it cracked by itself, but I gave in after about fifteen minutes and finished it off with a heat gun. So much for patience. Thank you for another wonderful class. Daria

I've been wanting to play with these paints for a while but have held off purchasing them. Now I have no excuse since my girls and I have been watching your Thinking Inking videos and they want to play along! Even my 3 year old comes up to me with a package of dabbers telling me "You need dabbers Mommy so I can paint with it." So, when I have free time, we will be playing along! Thanks for doing this series Jennifer!

Jennifer - Thanks for creating this great video series. I have been totally inspired and can't wait to get a few free minutes to give all these techniques a try.

I do have one question though - how does everyone store their craft sheet? I don't have a dedicated scrap room/table so I have to put away all my supplies when not in use. Any suggestions??

I store my craft sheet flat on top of an iris cart. It should not be folded. Rolling it and storing it in a paper towel roll is another option if you have thrown out the original packaging box.

Jennifer, thanks so much for these wonderful classes! (Thanks to Ranger and Hero Arts, too!). I have a lot of Ranger products, but haven't taken the time to figure out how to get the most from them yet. These videos are awesome!

Can anyone help me out? I can't seem to get the PDF file from Week 4 Class 1 to download. I keep getting a message that the file is corrupt. I'd love it if someone would have a moment or two to email the PDF file to me at Luvs2scrap@aol.com.

Thanks so much!

Approximately how long does it take for the Distress Crackle Paint to air dry? I know if you put it on thin it would obviously take less to dry, but I would probably use it pretty thick to get nice cracks.

ETA:
I just found this video which answers my question, but also shows a pretty cool thing to do with the paint.
