Hi Peas! Welcome to another week of Design School. We're beginning the week with a lesson on our next 2 design principles, along with a fabulous group of new projects from the Garden Girls. See the lesson and printable here, and the homepage with links to the rest of the event content here.

What do you think of Emphasis and Repetition? Are you leaning toward trying one over the other for your homework this week? Did one or any of the examples help illustrate these principles for you? What stands out to you? Let's hear!

I am loving design school! EXCEPT - it is distracting me from prepping for my own class (I have a grade 8 class this year and we start back in a week) - hahaha
Keep the great info and examples coming!!!

I love to use the Repetition principle because it's an easy way to make a pretty layout, but Emphasis is great too! Thank you for the lesson, I'm enjoying this class so much!

Question on something else: When are we going to get our wonderful badges for uploading a layout in the challenge? Maybe I'm a bit silly but I love my badges, and this is a particularly beautiful one that I will be proud to wear.

Started working on a project this morning. I am trying emphasis. My photos aren't great (but love the moment they represent), so I am trying to emphasize the title. Not sure if it's quite working.

Oooh, emphasis is something I have done (by mistake, not by some meaningful design goal lol!) but I'm not sure I have ever tried repetition. I think that will be my challenge this week!

Thanks so much for this series. I am learning a lot and really enjoying the los used in the lessons and those created by your team. I loved the repetition lo with the cars & trucks! Also, for emphasis, the swirl was a cool idea I never would have thought to try. I also learned about the difference between using warm colors versus cool colors as emphasis...something I was not aware of.

I love repetition but I'm thinking I should challenge myself by doing emphasis since I don't use it as much. I really like the big photo ans since I usually scrap 4X6 it would be a fun way to step outside my box and try something new!

Pottle, emphasizing the title sounds like a great idea! I have the same problem as you, not all photos are great but I love them anyway. Can't wait to see your page!

Still can't figure out the badge thingy. I posted a layout for the challenge yesterday AND left comments for other entries. Still no badge. *sniff*

Here is the one that I tried to emphasize the title block. Design-wise, is it acceptable to emphasize something that is not the "meat" of the page?

I think the journaling will be the heart of this page when my son is grown (and hopefully looking at my scrapbooks someday), but I wasn't sure how to emphasize it in balanced way that worked with the rest of the page. So I sorta took the easy? way out and emphasized the title. But does that devalue the page? I like the results, so....?

This is a great lesson. I love how it explains emphasis and repetition. Now I just need to find time to try it on my layouts and maybe also some cards. This is really good stuff.

I have a question...

Would this be considered 'repetition' or called something else..

Instead of repeating the same 'car' on a page, what if you used different types of cars all over the page?

I have this idea for a page using small transparencies next to the photos...emphasizing the theme of the page...a type of repetition I think...but each transparency will be slightly different. Or is this more like achieving balance?

Thanks for the great classes! I'm going to go for repetition for my homework. We'll see what I come up with.

Cbee, I think it does classify as repetition. I don't think repetition has to be the exact same item; it can be more subtle. Candice Greenway offered a class at my LSS a few years back and her rule was "Use it once, use it Twice" and that included colours, patterns, images, etc.

I did this LO, "NO!" for her class, and you can see the repeated red 'no', white on black (words and ribbon, exclamation marks, stitching, etc. IMHO this is also repetition and forms a cohesive design. And it's fun to try to think of different ways to repeat the same thing!

Margareta, I'm sorry for the trouble/confusion with the badge. I've added it to your profile. If anyone else uploaded to the challenge and is missing their badge from Week 1, let me know by sending me a PeaMail message.

Pottle, what a great solution!

Cbee, I agree with Michelle - an item does not have to be duplicated exactly to be repeated. For example, this layout by our guest Suzanne repeats circles where each one is a little different, as well as a patterned paper with different circles. They are different and yet the shape is the same. HTH!

Thank you Jamie, for the badge and for the kind comment on my homework.
I'm thinking about this week's homework. I love both emphasis and repetition. But they would not be possible to combine would they? I mean, if you use repetition, wouldn't it be impossible to emphasis anything in that repetitive layout? Or could you maybe use repetition in the background of a LO and still place the emphasis on a central element? Just thinking aloud here...

Jumping in with this week's, here's mine, January 09. I repeated circles the same size.
Maybe I'll try to work on one with emphasis, since that one would be a harder challenge to me. This such a great series!

I keep sitting down to try a lo using repetition...must not come easily to me because both los this week ended up with emphasis instead! Tomorrow is the day!

I posted my homework for this week. I chose emphasis by placing a big photo in the center of the layout and build everything around that. But there's also a kind of repetition with all the daisies.

I checked the one box that said Design School when uploading my LO but it still doesn't show among the challenge submissions or on the page with the member participation. Gah! This web site is beginning to get on my nerves.
I know it's a small matter and maybe it's silly of me, but when I submit to a challenge I would like my LO to show up there.

I'm probably just not seeing it, but is there a way to view the GG examples (click on them to see what they had to say).

Also, there is a Design School challenge with "Tarjay" in the title. I am assuming that is not the one we should use for Homework? Like last week, it is confusing!!

Looking forward to week 3!

Well that was the only box to check in the upload section this week. I agree, it is very confusing. At last, my homework is showing up among the challenge submissions.

I love this class! It's awesome! Just not loving all the problems with the web site right now...

Looking forward to the lessons of week 3.
