Okay so this totally conflicts with my siggy. But I wanted to make DS some cookies similar to the lofthouse ones. He can't eat them because of peanut allergies.
But he's heard that they are the *softest, best, yummiest* sugar cookies EVAH. And wants some really bad.
Anyone know of a similar recipe? That you've had great results with. Or tips for super soft sugar cookies?
TIA!

There's one on recipezaar (http://www.recipezaar.com/23817) but the comments state it doesn't taste the same.
Here's one on allrecipes: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Great-Grandads-Sugar-Cookies/Detail.aspx)
Great Grandad's Sugar Cookies
SUBMITTED BY: Kathylee
PHOTO BY: Christine
"This recipe puffs up to make great Sugar cookies. My Great Grandfather was a baker, and this is the kind the bakery made. To make sour milk, add a teaspoon of vinegar to regular milk, and let stand for 5 minutes."
Original recipe yield: 5 dozen
PREP TIME 30 Min
COOK TIME 10 Min
READY IN 1 Hr 10 Min
US METRIC
SERVINGS About scaling and conversions
INGREDIENTS
* 6 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 tablespoon baking powder
* 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1 pinch salt
* 2 1/2 cups white sugar
* 1 1/2 cups shortening
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 cup sour milk
* 3 eggs, beaten
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a medium bowl, stir together 4 cups flour, baking powder, nutmeg, salt, and sugar. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in baking soda, sour milk, beaten eggs, and vanilla. Stir as little as possible, and add the remaining flour as necessary to make dough thick enough to roll out.
3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 inch apart on the prepared cookie sheets.
4. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in preheated oven. Cool on baking sheets.
MUCH better comments on this one!

I have the actual Lofthouse cookie recipe.
I worked with a woman whose grandmother founded Lofthouse cookies. She gave me the recipe for the sugar cookies and the icing. I have it somewhere, so I can dig it out if you want it.

Thanks Katiepotatie-I've tried both of those and they aren't the same.
I believe that part of the secret is in the handling of the dough and the copykat recipes just don't address that with as much detail as I would suspect is necessary.

Sorry everyone! I got busy yesterday and couldn't come back.
I have never made this recipe but I know it is the original. For some reason the copy that was given to me only has the ingredients listed and no directions. So with that in mind, please don't be mad at me if they don't turn out just right for you.
Lofthouse Cookies:
2 eggs
2 C. sugar
2 C. cream
2/3 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
2 C. shortening (Lard)
Vanilla to taste
Enough flour to form a soft ball (She told me that the key to making soft, fluffy cookies is to add a lot of flour. But she didn't tell me how much. )
I assume that you just mix all of the ingredients together because there are no special directions listed. Bake at 350º (again no specified time) and the cookies need to stay white.
Icing:
1 pkg. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 can condensed milk (for spreading)
1 tsp shortening
1 tsp butter
I'm sorry that these recipes are so vague as to the directions. I didn't realize that when I posted that I had the recipe.
But now you have all of the ingredients, so maybe, just maybe you can make it work.

wow - thanks, the REAL lofthouse recipe, eh??
Unbelieveable!!
Here's a "clone type" that was printed in our paper coupla years ago.
============
My kids are crazy about some cookies I get at Ralph's called Lofthouse Sugar Cookies. They are super soft and have icing on them. If you have a recipe for anything similar, I'd appreciate it.Dawn Cochrane, EncinitasWell, I hope you are proud of yourself. You've created a cookie monster. Until your letter crossed my desk, I was blissfully unaware of these pillowy, cake-like cookies (190 calories apiece, thank you very much).Now, I've joined the legions of addicts who wolf them down by the box and post Internet love letters to Lofthouse Delicious Cookies, the Utah-based company that whips up these treats.Lofthouse won't share its recipe, claiming it would be nigh on impossible to duplicate the formula in a home kitchen. That was all the challenge that was needed, apparently; on the Web, I found plenty of cookie clones created by home bakers. This one, from a Victorville newspaper, was identical to many other Web offerings
Swedish Sour Cream Cookies
Makes 3 dozen big cookies
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1-1/2 cups sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour (enough for desired consistency for rolling)
Cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs, sour cream and vanilla.Mix in baking soda, baking powder and enough flour to create a consistency for rolling. Cover and refrigerate overnight.Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Roll out dough to a 1/4-to 3/8-inch thickness using a generous amount of flour. Cut out shapes and bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 8 minutes. Cook on a wire rack. Frost and decorate as desired.

Icing:
1 pkg. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 can condensed milk (for spreading)
1 tsp shortening
1 tsp butter
I wonder if the frosting is cooked, because of the egg?
I'd imagine the cream is just that, whipping cream, not whipped.

I'm willing to try making a batch today or tomorrow & posting my results. I might half the recipe for testing though....
Cream...first thought was real cream (for whipping), but sour cream is often used in cookies. Maybe someone wants to try this with cream, and another with sour cream??
Icing: The egg has me stumped. I wouldn't serve it if it weren't cooked, so I think I'd try making this in a double boiler or something. But I'm not so worried about the frosting. It's the cookies I want to get right!!!
