Hands down -- ACDSee!
If you search the board here, you'll find a lot of posts about it and here's a resource that can't be beat. These gals -- Heidi and Connie -- held my hand while I organized my stash and they are AWESOME!

ACDSee gets a big thumbs up--as well as Heidi and Connie, whom I can't thank enough for their info on ACDSee.

I have tried acdsee and loved it. Problem was, it created thumbnails, I guess of all jpgs/images and ate up GBs worth of hard drive space on the C partition of my computer where my programs live.
I think if I move the directory for the cache (?) guessing, it will go to another drive where I have plenty of space.
Thanks girls!

I put all my kits in fxfoto. I can install them without unzipping, add keywords for searchng and scroll through them. Plus I can easily remove or add kits. I love being able to scroll through them. |

My sister has suggested that you can take the exe file that you download & a text file of the key code & burn that on to a CD.

a low tech solution is to print the the Preview page and keep it in a binder - just flip through the pages to find the element you want, note the kit it's from and then find that kit wherever you store your kits (mine are on my hard drive and backed up on cd).
If you open the element file in PS, it shows a thumbnail of it.

Im very much a newbie, & always research about 1 yr before I make the jump...This is the 1st I heard of ACDSee...what version is needed for cataloging all the digi kits, brushes, png, abr, psd, etc. Id like to have all my software & hardware in place before I start unzipping all the wonderful kits out there. All my pics have been organized, but not to the exact specs of the ACDSee prog but they're fairly close. I already have PSE6 & CS3E, but havent really played with them yet & needing any advice for external hard drives & upgrading ram since our home computer is the only one that literally runs our part-time business & all household finances & now to add digital scrapbooking so I dare not want it to crash & burn!!!

You can download a 30 day free trial of ACDsee to see if it meets your needs. External hard drives are a good option for storing your photos and kits but remember it can crash just like an internal hard drive. Other storing options include burning to CD, usb drives and online storage. I think it is always a good idea to keep your stuff stored in a couple of different places just as a precaution. |

No one has mentioned this yet, but I just use Bridge. I set up keywords and can view everything easily with thumbnails. It works for me and I don't need anything additional because it already comes with Photoshop.

I had ACDSee but when my laptop died and took it with it, I just put a free copy of Picasa on my desktop - and I think I'm going to keep it!! I love the easy editing (even though I have Lightroom), direct posting to a web album, I can email pics, etc.... Picasa has come a long way!

I'm glad this thread / topic is coming back up. I'm finally finished getting all of my kits and photos organized how I want them on my hard drive and am ready to start categorizing and tagging.
My collection is about 70 gigs of stuff so I want to do it right the first time, LOLOL.
My dh wants to buy Lightroom and have me use that. Is there anywhere that I can compare their features side by side? I think the reason dh wants Lightroom is to be albe to fix photos as well as categorize, and I don't know if ACDSee does that, does it? Or maybe I need ACDSee for categorizing my digital stuff and Lightroom for the pix?
I used the organizer in PSE 4.0 and have heard that people moved away from it because it made PSE run too slowly. Is that still the case with newer versions of PSE? Maybe I just need to upgrade my PSE to 6 or 7 and use the organizer?
ARGH!!! Analysis paralysis! |

I'm on a Mac and am anxiously waiting on a soon to be released beta version of ACDSee Pro for the Mac.
I have both Bridge and Lightroom that I currently use with Photoshop. I use Bridge for digi, but it re-indexes every time I do a new keyword search making it very slow. I use Lightroom for my photos. Good with keywords and very fast. I won't use Lightroom for digi because it doesn't read png, psd, or pdf files. The png is especially a problem as most alphas and many embellies are png.
If anyone on a Mac has experience with Shoebox and likes it let me know. Jessica Sprague used to have a class on how to organize with Shoebox but no more (: |

You can also download Picasa for free. It is a google program that you can download and use to organize your kits. It allows you to tag kit elements.
I've been using it for a few months and really like it. Granted, I don't think it's quite as nice as ACDsee, but it doesn't cost you anything! |

AHA!!! Good to know!!! Now I can justify getting ACDSee even if dh wants to get Lightroom for himself, LOLOL.
Thanks, Melanie! |

Nancy- have you downloaded the trial of ACDsee yet? You can get free 30 days for the full version here:
http://downloads.acdsystems.com/en/acdsee.exe
Anything that you tag during the trial period stays, so you won't lose anything when you purchase it.
If you sign up for the ACDSee newsletter, they will email you when it goes on sale. Or if you google, you can sometimes find a coupon code.

Ha, glad to know I'm not the only one!
Folks, you're all aware of online reviews of all these things, yes/no? CNet, PCWorld, etc. Just Google whatever you're researching, e.g. "ACDSee reviews" and up pops a whole bunch of reviews.
A site I've been using a lot lately is Top Ten Reviews. Another place I go to get reviews from regular folks (as opposed to computer geeks/research teams) is good ol' Amazon. Toward the bottom of the page for most items are reviews from users.
Enjoy.

So glad to get such a response. Ive decided to go with ACDSee 2.5.33 & yes I have gone through all the reviews, including Amazon's customer comments. I got a good deal thru IOffer.com...its where I got my brand new sealed full version of CS3E for only $50.00, not a reshrink wrap or copy no lie & got to register it directly with Adobe. Last note...I want a good printer (not necessarily 12x12) & very partial to Epson only, unfortunately Best Buy had downgraded me to a CX6000 cause they couldnt realign my CX6600, so I want a better one...so any suggestions ( I think I will start this as a new topic/thread if I dont get many responses).

LOL - guess I'm a low-tech digi gal ... this is what I do. I print the previews on 8.5 x 11 paper, leaving myself room at the bottom of the page to scribble notes - like kits that might coordinate across designers. I store all the previews in a 3-ring binder and just flip through to find what I'd like. |

I use iPhoto (I'm on a MAC). I found this great program called "iPhoto Library Manager" and it let's me have multiple iPhoto libraries. I just start that program, then choose which library I want to open and then go from there. I love it...and it's all FREE |

I'm recommending ACDSee, as well. BUT, I got the best use of it when I took the class through jessicasprague.com. This one is taught by Heidi at digiscrapinfo.com. It was so informative, that I ditched everything I had already done and used her very good methods instead. |

I am using Vista and just recently discovered how easy it is to tag files in Vista. I went into Windows Photo Gallery and put in tags for all of my digital files. Now I can open my main digital elements folder, type in what I want in the search bar (I can type "orange" or "white ribbon" or "tag botanical" and it pulls up everything with those tags. If I set the view to extra large icons I can scroll through the search results and easily find what I want. I am loving it! And I didn't have to buy any software! |

I'm definitely not a seasoned digi scrapper; I've never done a page, but I'm thinking of dipping my toe into the water, so to speak.
I am interested in Kayla Lamoreaux's use of Lightroom as a source for organizing digital supplies. She's done what seems to be a fairly exhaustive study of the best way to organize digi supplies and has cataloged her process on her blog Digital Scrapbooking 101 |
