until around 9:00 when my hostess starts telling me how tired she is, and yawning, and starts putting away the things she was working on, and bugging me! (This is from an incident on the first page)
You paid for this crop AT an LSS, so this woman was being paid for her time there. I probably would have felt obligated to leave, but I would have been tempted to say "Hey, I paid for this crop to get some sanity and a few hours away from the kids, so I'm staying all night. I'm sorry if this is inconvenient for you, but you could have cancelled the crop knowing there was only one person."...or the likely answer "I'll leave now for your convenience if you don't charge me for the crop, otherwise I'm staying."
My husband would come to the crop so I could feed my child who refused to take a bottle. He wouldn't come in - just call and say he's out there, I'd go feed my boy in the car and come back in. My 3YO would want to come in for some treats (everytime we shop there, they give him treats and he knows where they are...), but was only in there for a few minutes.
I quit going to the crops at my LSS after the owner said my friend and I needed to quit shopping online. However, she has such a small store and doesn't carry a lot of current items, if you order something from her, it takes a few months to get in - we are in the middle of nowhere, so if we want something new and now, our only choice is to buy it online. We didn't buy things online that we could get at her store. It wasn't that she said it, it was how she said it. Plus she would talk our ear off given the opportunity and then it would be hard to get things done. I quit shopping at the store shortly after. She's a nice person, but an old lady that liked to gossip and complain too much for my liking.
We now crop at each other's houses or at my friends church during the day once a month - kids are there to play, sometimes it's hard to get things done with kids there.
For the "CHRIST HATERS" comment from the store owner - it is hard to comment back to such close-minded people. Your in such shock by the time you compose yourself to comment, the opportunity is passed. You all should have just left. Although he was likely close-minded enough that he wouldn't have realized WHY you left, and he may not have cared.

Sifonia asked
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is there something about scrapbooking that attracts more than the fair share of "crazies" to this hobby?
Is it the competitive and addictive nature of this hobby that leads to such insanity? Or have these people been terrorizing anyone they touch in any situation for their whole live and are just now ending up attending cropping parties?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think every hobby has it's insane nutters. Knitters have those who must unroll every skein in the store to be sure it's consistent or really the same dyelot as the rest she wants and the "crazy ladies who only knit for their 23 cats". My other main hobby is re-enacting, though not American Civil War which has folks still fighting the war, and there are plenty of folks who have trouble sorting out old history from current events and smell like it.
These are mostly people, I guess, that need more positive attention and don't know how to get it without crossing the socially acceptable lines. It just doesn't make it easier for those who "get it". Hopefully, after I'm done being annoyed, I'll remember to pity them.

Great Thread! AS a LSS owner..its things like these I try to PREVENT happening in my crops- I think so far i just cant deter the groups of pals- gossiping and laughing loudly, but you know i just try to interact with them, introduce people, and understand that sometimes these ladies havent been out- or seen their girlfriends in ahwile.we also empahazise that Friday nights can be rated PG-13-R, and Saturdays are Family Friendly so that everyone knows whats expected..so, its a fun time, as long as they treat me, and my other customers with respect --- anyway i have a HORROR crop story!!
Before I had my own LSS, an aquaintaince of mine invited me to a crop with ladies from her church, she really wanted to get out becasue she was mad at her hubby, well , since it was a weeknight, i knew i wouldnt have to stay longer then a few hours...
so it turns out this was a CM ladies house although the CM lady wasnt there, a friend of hers was running the crop..anyway we get to croppin, the ladies around us are nice, space was adequate...anyway after about an hour into it, the hostess askes everyone to come sit on the floor with her...I notice she is holding a bible- and even though i am not anti-religion, this was a crop and i felt uncomfortbale, so i choose a chair in the back- the other ladies sat on the floor (including the friend i went with)
so the hostess proceeded to read the bible in relation to easter (easter was in a couple weeks) then she poured wine into a goblet, and broke bread, and passed that around, and asked everyone to say something about what easter means to them...
when it was my turn, i politely declined, but sat until everyone was done,
after that we all went back to our chairs, i yawned excessivly, and told my friend i was tired...
As we were packing the hostess apologized if she made anyone uncomfortable, but she wanted to share this time with God.
Anyway-- To each his own, but this was a strange crop!!!!

My utterly uneducated guess is that it's probably a direct result of the fact that scrappers are working in close quarters with family photos. This naturally leads to more "personal" conversation than you would normally undertake in virtually any other "club" setting.
So you have someone cropping photos of family which leads to conversation of family and then the gloves come off ... |

Some of these posts have me LOL for real!
Well, I had an incident happen just the other day. I had a neighbor over to crop. She's new the to hobby. Our kids have played pretty well the first couple of times they were together, so we figured we could let them play (my husband watching) while we cropped. Well, the last time (before this time) I noticed her kids were kind of obnoxious... very dispresptectful of her, locking our doors and lot letting our children into their own rooms, etc. But hey, kids have bad days, mom punished them when they got home, whatever. Surely this time it would be better, right? Oh no. Far worse. Let's just say a lot of things happened ending with them somehow locking my son's door and pulling it completely off the hinges. My husband was watching them and constantly telling them to stop and they ignored him. Their mother did nothing to help. In fact when they broke the door, she didn't even apologize, in fact she just laughed it off. Personally, I would have been mortfied if my kids had done that. Anyway, I don't see any more crops in our future, at least not when her children are involved at my house.
Another time I was at a crop and a lady was drinking a can of pop nearby and almost tripped over something. Someone warned her she should probably step away from the table. She said she wouldn't spill it because she never has before. Then proceeded to trip and spill it all over the table, ruining the items on it. We were so ticked! No apology there either.
A long time ago I went to a crop and I had some Christmas pics stolen. I never got them back and this was before I had a digital. They took the negatives too. Whether they meant to take them or not, wouldn't you think that if you picked up someone else's pics you would have at least contacted someone saying you had someone else's pics?
Anyway, I didn't go to crops for a long time. |

I went to a new friends to crop & she showed me how to use her eyelet setter (the hammer sort) and her homemade setting mat made from cardboard. She helpfully explained it was better to use the setter on the floor and then I hammered so hard, through her setting mat and then into her kitchen floor!!!. My only saving grace was she was having a new kitchen floor fitted soon, and didnt mind one bit. That could have been a very expensive mistake.

Ugh, my worst crop was at a LSS. All their crops were attended by someone who 'borrowed' things from other croppers but I was new and didn't know that. I put my new Wizard aside and this woman walks up behind me and lifts it off the table. I say "I'm sorry, I'm using that" as she walks away! The first thing she does is put the plastic sheet in upside down so the side that should remain smooth has cut marks in it! We are on the same side of the table, with one person between us. I jump up and go take my machine out of her hands. She tells me she's not finished and I'm so mad I tell her if she wants a Wizard to go buy one - the store sells them. She came with someone who sat opposite her and this person glares at me the rest of the night.
Plus they had people who rummaged through my paper as if it was up for grabs and made suggestions on my pages. We were also competing for a "Most number of completed pages" prize and the person who won did so by slapping multiple raw pictures onto cardstock. Hello?
The whole thing was a big "How to pay money to not have any fun and get your equipment ruined by stupid people" exercise.

there was a lady singing (very off key) at one that i went to recently. after about 30 mintues, i asked her to stop. i didn't pay 10.00 to listen to her sing off key the whole night.
then she was pissy to me and my group the rest of the night. |

Wait! I do have one!
I was going to my first ever crop for National Scrapbook Day (I think around 2003). It was an evening crop and I had just finished a day of work at Disney. I was driving the back way of the store and was extremly excited.... til I didn't noticed the island for the parking stall sticking out. I was going pretty quick. Next think you know it, I ran over it (the passenger side). I got out of my car to see both tires flat and one of the rim totally messed up. Had to call my dad to come fix it for me.
So I call the store told the lady there what happend. She was really nice, and saw me behind the store. But one everything was cleared up and I was at the crop... yea I was the youngest one there. Plus I felt really ignored since everyone else was already grouped up with someone. I missed the games. So I left early....
My next crop after that was the one Stephanie organized for us Peas at Ever After. It was the best crop I went to and had such a blast! |

I agreed to host a 12-hour crop with the event coordinator (aka EC) at an M's. The EC called me 2 hours after the event started to tell me that she was sick and wasn't coming in after all. She also couldn't be bothered to try to find a replacement (even though she WAS the EC for the STORE and had a list of all interested craft teachers!!). M's has a policy that employees (including instructors) can not work over 8 hours, so these ladies who'd paid for 12 hours were expected to leave after cropping for 8... and they expected ME to tell them this. The manager on duty finally managed to find someone, and the EC had the nerve to ask me why I quit teaching there. When I explained MY personal policy of delivering what I promise, she had all kinds of childish excuses and said "shame on you" for "trying to make me feel bad for getting sick".
Every other crop I've ever gone to has been fabulous!

Ah, Heather, please don't let our stories discourage you from going and having a great time!
I started this thread because I just KNEW other Peas must have experienced a crop "nightmare" or two like I had. BUT, the majority of the time, my cropping experiences have been great, and I truly enjoy getting out and meeting very talented scrappers. No matter the location or size of the crop, it never fails that someone inspires me or teaches me something new!
So go and have fun! |

Let's see...I've attended several home crops where I thought I was going to die from the heat! Summer in GA and cropping in a small room with 8-10 ladies with NO freaking air conditioning! I swear! I'd pay more for the crop if you'd simply turn on the AC! I have literally had drops of sweat running down my arms and dripping off my forehead as I'm scrapping!
My biggest pet peeves at crops are the ladies who bring as many supplies as you'd find in a well-stocked store and constantly complain about having so much to transport in and out of the crop. And the ones who carry on their conversations from way across the room throughout the evening. And the ones who bring only a single serve bag of plain potato chips and an open 2 liter of store brand soda. They always seem to manage to eat the homemade dips and appetizers others made.
As much as I like the conversation and get ideas & inspiration from other scrappers...I prefer to stay home and use my time to scrap as "me" time! The money spent on crops is better used for more supplies

Hello on that one. The first time I ever attended a BIG organized crop (one held in a hotel ball room, not just a small group getting together) I was fascinated by the number of women who brought so much stuff. I mean, why do you need that much? Cracks me up.

Yikes! I hope my house doesn't end up on the bad list! I have friends over a couple times a month and my house isn't very big, so sometimes it can be a bit tight. Sometimes I have people sitting on the floor! Although they tell me they like to sit on the floor, so I hope that's true!! |

I've got two...
First one...it happened to a gal I crop with. She was a newbie cropper and she signed up for a CMC-hosted crop at a small-town hall. It wasn't her town, it was an hour away she she didn't know anyone. She had very few supplies but intended to stock up at the crop. She never got the chance. While she was waiting for some ladies to finish up their shoppng (the CMC set up a few tables for shopping), she started on a layout with non-CM stuff. The CMC came up to her and told her to pack up her stuff and leave. In front of about 50 croppers. This gal was so embarassed (she is very shy, it took all of her courage to go crop alone!) that she couldn't even stammer out that she WAS planning to buy from the CMC and just left. The worst part was that she didn't scrapbook for 2 years after that!
Second one...I was at my SIL's crop (she is a CMC who does allow non-CM stuff ) and there was a page completion contest. I planned my pages in advance (making page kits and sketched the layout) and I WON the most number of pages completed. One lady had the gall to complain that I cheated because I picked my papers beforehand and used sketches. Her pages were pics slapped onto "wallpapered" CM album pages with NO matting, NO stickers, NO borders, and NO journalling and she had the nerve to complain about my fully cropped, embellished, AND journalled pages? I told her maybe she should plan next time as well then |

The first crop I went to was a CM one. Now this isn't a bash on CM at all, CM is what introduced me to scrapping. Anyway, I was a new mother and BFing so I took my baby w/ me. The CMC said that was fine and my baby slept majority of the time so I was thankful for that. The crop consisted of 5 women, the rest of the women knew each other and didn't go out of their way to say one word to me. What I found odd about this crop, the women were giving me their punches saying they weren't into scrapbooking anymore, I can have their stuff (they said this to each other, not to me). I walked out of there w/ new paper packs and punches. It wasn't the worst crop it was just weird. This was almost 9 yrs ago and they were done w/ scrapbooking?
I don't go to a lot of crops b/c I'm shy and when I do feel comfortable to speak with someone, I'm given the up and down glance, nudge the person next to them and ignored. So instead I scrap at home. I know there is a local scrap gathering in my area, people on this board know it and have been to it. I want to go but I'm so nervous that someone is going to crack on my scrapbooking style. Sure I've been scrapping for 11 yrs but I still feel like a novice. |

Well, I haven't seen this one yet, so here goes...
At a crop I was at, one of the employees (who wasn't working that night, just attending) was proudly showing some of her friends her pics of her newly enhanced breasts. She then proceeded to show the pics to some of the other guests (whether they'd asked to see them or not! ).
Pretty soon, she said "Oh, what the heck!", lifted her shirt and shared with everyone! |

This thread is great.
I have a few to share that I haven't seen anythign like so far:
#1 I went to a crop years ago at a CMC's that I was in a homeschooling support group with AND went to church with her. This was probably 8 or 9 years ago.
I was still using CM albums then, but not wild about the white pages. So, I had wallpapered a page with some cute patterned paper, adn put an 8x10 of my son as an infant on the page. It was simple, but no sticker sneezing (which was really popular back then). I was pretty pleased with myself and the page.
This "friend" came to my table and said "May I share this page with the group?"
Wow, I felt so honored. I said yes, of course.
She said in a booming voice "Can I have everyone's attention, please? I just wanted to let you all know this is NEVER what you should do with your pages. Because Jeanne put this other brand, cheap, tacky paper here, CM will not be able to replace this photo if the paper deteriorates the photo." I just sat there, with my mouth hanging open.
I never dreamed she was going to say something like that. I didn't say a word. My thoughts were: Listen up, um, lady. If I want to buy stuff and shred it for toilet paper, that is MY option!!!!
I packed up within the hour and left, never to return.
Another CMC story (sorry CMCers, not trying to bash, honest):
I went to a crop at a CMC's house (different one). There were 2 other gals, plus the CMC at the table in the kitchen. I didn't know anyone.
She said, "we are expecting some friends to come, so you can sit out here". *out here* was on the enclosed porch. Do you know it gets cold out there in Iowa in the winter?
Her children (late grade school aged) stopped by and asked their mom loudly "Who is that lady out there on the porch?" She said, "I am not sure, why don't you go ask about her and then come tell me?"
Yep, left that one within the hour too.
For the most part, crops I have been to at LSS's have gone well.
The private ones tend to get loud and crude in my opinion.
A's is my fave these days, because I know I can go on any Friday or Saturday. |

I go to crops at our local scrapbook stores on a pretty regular basis with my friends and my mom...
No real nightmares so far but one story does stick in my mind...
There was this one lady at one crop awhile ago that did the following:
* asked if there were trash cans or 'do you just throw everything on the floor'?
* talked loudly about everything - personal details that not everyone needs to hear.
* took her bra off in the middle of the crop - said that she does it all the time at home around this time (whatever time it was), etc.

The Op's story is horrible...I would have said that is F'ing insane and walked out....
Mine was bad...
The first time I have went to a crop...I brought an extra album to share...and this lady picked it up, starts flipping threw it...and says:
"How come you scrapbook, you have a boy and he wont appreciate this when he gets older, at least I have girls and they will"...
WITH my mouth wide open...I replied...
"Well, I sb for me...and I am raising my son to appreciate things...maybe you should too...."
B*TCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would not sb the rest of the night...i was Pi$$ED....!! So I left early! |

mine isn't too terrible
i went to a crop at a scrapbooking store with my aunt a few years ago, i was probably 16 or 18, so everyone there felt it was necessary to treat me like a child. the hostess came and gave me page advice and said, "you might want to mat that photo, matting is where you put a piece of cardstock behind your picture and then leave some on the edges." uhhh, thanks for the education. then when i was leaving i heard them talking about how i hadn't bought enough of their products. |

I am loving this thread!! Here's mine.
There is no LSS where I live but a friend and I make it a point to travel to one, that is about 2 hours away, on a regular basis for a girls night.
The LSS is really small and has been in "renovation" mode for a loooooong time. The crop we were attending had assigned seating and it was very, very tight. There is no crop room, just tables set up in a corner of the store. There were 3 of us at an 8 foot long table, my friend, who is "a big boned gal (her description, not mine!)", was in the middle, I was by the wall and the LSS owners daughter was at the aisle end of the table. The daughter was planning her make and takes that she was teaching that night and needed a lot of room to spread out.
It didn't take long before my friend was practically on my lap and we had to put most of our stuff away so that the daughter would have room. Anyway, we finally noticed that there were 3 tables, sitting totally empty at the end of the room. I asked the owner if we could move to one of those tables so as to give her daughter enough room to get ready for her classes (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), more like give *us* enough room to get some scrapping done. She replied that those seats had been paid for by some of her regular customers and she wanted to keep them open IN CASE they showed! It was already well in to the crop when I asked and not one of them had shown up. I told her we would move from the table IF one of them showed up. She still wouldn't allow it as she didn't want to inconvenience us! Lol!!
I was going to just move my crap over there, but my friend was afraid to make a scene so we stayed where we were, for the next couple of hours, staring wistfully at the wide open spaces of the empty tables 6 feet away from us, AND listened to the daughter explain how she gets all of her inspiration for projects from her dreams. She was even "kind" enough to explain to us, in great detail, which dream provided her with each element of every project she was working on. Did you know that the dreams you have after $ex, particularly after the big O, are more vivid and colorful? No, well we didn't either! But now we do!
The evening wasn't a total write off, we still had a great night out and my scrapping has never been more colorful and my husband has never been happier! Lol! Just kidding! (maybe) | |

'Lovin' this thread. Fun reads!
I don't have any major nightmare stories. I did attend a crop at an LSS where I was the newbie and everyone else the "regulars". They were friendly enough but the majority of them spent the next several hours husband-bashing. I think a little girl-talk like "Sheesh, DH was kind of grouchy today" never hurt anyone but these complaints were downright awful. The "he's-a-worthless-good-for-nothing-ugly-low paid-lazy-no-good-in-the-sack......." etc., etc., etc. variety. I sat there thinking "Uh, so why did you marry him and why are you still married???". It wasn't enough to make me stomp off but it wasn't so great for the creative juices, ya know??
I felt sorry a bit for the LSS owner. I know she was uncomfortable with the talk but as these were "regulars" she probably didn't want to offend them by saying something but sheesh...
I don't go to many crops but I can honestly say I've been to more fun ones that yucky/boring ones!

Exactly!
It would make a good S/O - kind of a PSA - but after a certain point if you, as a woman, are going on and on and on about what an a@#hole your husband is, how worthless, he's horrible, etc. etc. - we don't find you clever or feel sorry for your plight - we just think "like must attract like right?"
It's toxic!
All the others made me laugh - but the "Jeannie used this cheap, tacky paper" oh my!
I mean what in the world did she hope to achieve. Even in my most diehard CM days (and don't we all get a bit rabid in the early days of the indoctrination ) I would have been so appalled at that spiteful behavior I would have left with you in protest.
Did anyone speak up at ALL? |

hmm...Lisa I am wondering if I know that first one?
I was at a crop at the LSS where I worked (off duty) and this older lady was walking around checking out everyone's projects. I was working on a page and, admittedly, the subject was something frivolous. I can't do the whole "caught up and chonological order" thing. Doesn't work for me. I just scrap whatever seems fun. So I was working on a two page layout about my new favorite coffee mug and the woman stops at my table and LOUDLY remarks she cannot believe I'm doing a layout about a mug and how she wishes she was so caught up she could do something so silly as to scrapbook a mug and she proceeds to make periodic, random and LOUD comments about that the rest of the night. Since I was an employee of the store all I really could do was smile and eventually just try to ignore her. There was a happy ending though...that layout got published!
The other story I have is not a nightmare but I like to tell it. I went to a weekend crop with a local group and we ended up having to double people up in rooms. No problem, I was totally fine sharing a bed with the friend I rode with and then we ended up with another friend on the floor in our room. Well some time in the middle of the night the friend I am sharing a bed with throws her arm over me and snuggles up to me. So there I lay, wide awake being spooned by my friend and I think that any second she's going to reposition herself and I can go back to sleep and forget about it. I didn't want to wake her or our other friend so I just waited for her to move. Only she didn't move. And it occured to me that not since I was a kid had I been snuggled by a woman (my mommy, of course) and I wonder if this constitutes cheating on dh (kidding) and OMGosh what if someone walks in or our friend on the floor wakes up to go to the bathroom and sees us. So I started giggling thinking all those silly thoughts and then laughing and I couldn't stop and ended up waking them up and she realized what she had done and was embarrassed for a moment but then we all started giggling. |

hhmm... I listen to Dr. Laura a lot. She's gives great advice. A lady called in complaining about her husband cutting his toe nails at the table. Her response was, well some ladies will kill just to have their husband back again (meaning they died) just to see them do that again. So... in my words, some ladies will kill just to see their worthless-good-for-nothing husband again. |

One time was at a two peas crop The crop itself was fun but we had arrived early since we know how crowded they get. Plus since they're at a hotel, they're at round banquet tables--NOT the most conducive for scrapping. 4 other ladies had done the same and left their stuff and gone for dinner. These 3 ladies come waltzing in half an hour late (dinner ladies are not back yet) and decide to cram two EXTRA people at our table and just pushed the stuff of the ladies who arrived early out of the way. They didn't ask any of us if we minded giving up our space, they just pushed stuff out of the way and added extra chairs. Plus then these ladies took up the most room, forcing the rest of us who had arrived in a timely manner to scrap on our laps and on the floor.
I was ticked but none of us wanted the confrontation so we just dealt with it.
The other super fun story was this woman who kept spreading in to my space. I tried to barricade myself with my stuff. (I don't mind some intrusion but she was out of control). So then she just stacked stuff ON TOP of my stuff, including putting her DINNER on my PICTURES. Jerk. |

Nope, they all just sat there with their mouths hanging open too. I think they were scared to say anything, that the CMC might come after them next.
Thanks for the empathy. |

This is such a great thread! I don't have any real nightmares to share - just the cold shoulder for using contraband at a CM crop years ago, the TMI conversations from the very loud "ladies" sitting next to me (I don't think they scrapped a page all night) and the "oh, you can't sit here" from the owner & teacher groupies at one local crop.
My favorite crops have been with friends - good conversations, good food, and good scrapping. And the price is right, too.
