***Warning--long tale***I definitely have an interesting story! A couple of years ago, I was driving 250 miles--after work--to join friends and family at a weekend crop at a B&B. I had notified the hostess several times that I would be arriving late, and she said it wouldn't be a problem(why would it be anyway since I was paying her a LOT of money).

When the evening meal was served, I wasn't there yet, and a friend started making a plate for me, and the hostess rushed over and snatched the plate out of my friend's hand and told her that wasn't allowed. Needless to say, everybody was shocked into speechlessness!

After I arrived, exhausted and hungry, I asked the hostess if I could make a plate, and she got very angry and said that I should have been on time and that she didn't want the kitchen to get dirty. At this point, everybody was furious, so we all drove into town so that I could eat.

The next day we started seriously scrapping but noticed that the promise of unlimited drinks and snacks wasn't happening. When somebody asked the hostess about this, she got very angry and said that she decided on the time for snacks, and it wasn't then. The hostess, btw, was not a scrapper, so she wasn't being inconvenienced at all.

At that point, some people packed up and left, and we never went to another event at that place. Now we meet once a month at one relative/friend's lovely home where we all pitch in with the food, save a ton of money, and have a fab time.

I have several, but I will start with one and come back. (I am supposed to be working now since lunch is over...)

A friend of mine taught and did crops at the LSS for awhile. They trusted her to close up the store and she was allowed to stay as late as she wanted. Well, everyone had left but my friend and I because we were in "the zone" and were creatively cranking out LOs and projects. Around midnight, one of the co-owners came in through the back door so her husband could use the restroom. We could tell they had been drinking, but hey, it's her store, she can do what she wants. Well then at about 1:15am, they came back, but this time they went into the main part of the store. We heard the cash register open and then they came back through and asked how much the crop had made that night. My friend stated that she hadn't counted it yet, so the co-owner asked for the money to count it. She made a big deal of putting it into the register. I still believe to this day that she took that money to continue the drinking spree she was on. We left soon after that leaving a note stating what had happened for the "other" co-owner to read when she got to the store to open the next day. That LSS folded less than a month later. I always feel that I witnessed the reason for it closing: a co-owner was drinking the profits.

I am surprised that April hasn't come and posted about the crop we went to. This lady had her four or five month old in the crop room and he made all sorts of loud noise FOR HOURS. People were getting so irritated that they started packing up to leave.

So I invited some friends to scrap for a weekend. A few were driving 5-6 hours, including the ones who ended up being the nightmare guests. Our favorite LLS had reserved the crop room for us that weekend so we could all crop and shop - and they taught a few classes for us plus some other customers. Well it starts on Saturday and three of the participants aren't there yet. They arrived several hours late. And they brought a little boy along without ever telling us.

They were all staying at my house so now we suddenly have to deal with "kid food", sleeping arrangements and the fact that this child stayed up until all hours and took over a scrapping table and the sizzix machine. His aunt that brought him seemed oblivious to the whole thing and spent most of the weekend socializing in another room and certainly never scrapping.

Our rules about no children have become very specific since that incident.

This is hardly a nightmare story, but it came to mind after reading the other posts.....

I went to my first weeked retreat crop with a girlfriend. We were all set up at our table, and left our things out when we went to bed. When I came back in the moring one woman who had been sitting by us had left a note on my table that she had taen all of my magazines to bed with her.

I had several torn pieces of paper in my magazines to hold pages and my place, they were all missing when she finally returned them the next afternoon. She had been up all night and slept in the next day.

I made sure to put all of my things in my bag the next night and close up shoppe!

Just getting around to reading through all these nightmares - love them all!

The only nighmares I can think of are the same ones I have over and over again. (Recurring nightmares?!)

I scrap at two places besides home mostly.

My church and a friend's weekender.

At my church, I always get stuck sitting next to the same woman. She is lovely, funny and I really like her. *But* she talks CONSTANTLY and must poll me about every single sticker, embellishment or photo placement on every single page. If I want to do you pages for you, you can *pay* me, OK? Plus, she talks non stop for hours and hours. I love her to death, but at about 2 a.m., I just want to tell her to put a cork in it!

Also they are CONSTANTLY playing "christian rock" music, which I hate. I mean, 18 straight hours of Point of Grace is enough to make anyone's brain freeze up. I can't concentrate! One crop I brought my dh's personal cd player and headphones to listen to a little Santana. I must have been interrupted 25 times by women walking over to the table, standing there staring at me waiting for me to look up. I'd finally look up, take the headphones off and they would say "what are you listening to?"

I finally made a little sign that said "I'm listening to Carlos Santana. No, he is not Satan." LOL

The other crop I go to is a weekend one. I like to go for long weekends so I can get away and really get some work done. The other scrappers are all very very close and get along very well. Unfortunately, the cropping space is extremely limited, so everyone gets there super early. We *all* bring tons of stuff to the weekend crops. So, we are always smashed in like sardines. At least everyone is really into sharing. I get to try new products, but no one wants to use mine. I'm hopelessly uncool, apparently!

Plus, they have all known each other forever and after several years of going to their crops, I still don't know who anyone is talking about. All first names, inside jokes and I never have a clue what's going on. Not cliques, but I'm just the outsider. My friend is really kind and always tries to keep me involved, but when it's dinner time and we invite some to go out with us, they have always already made their plans (probably weeks in advance! *chuckle*) and we end up by ourselves. My friend is very cool, and never makes me feel like she is being left out because of me, but I think they are just more comfortable without me around. So, she has to entertain me and doesn't get to spend time with her really good old friends.

I think next year I'm going to skip the weekender and give my friend some time to spend with her old friends. No one wants to give me a 30 minute backstory on why that last comment from so-and-so was funny!

I want to learn to digi scrap and do more at home. Plus, I won't have to lug so much stuff around. LOL

Oh, yeah, and my church crop only has round tables. I hate *round* tables! Who thinks they can scrap on *round* tables? We don't need no stinkin' round tables!!

Vent on poor, defenseless round tables over now. Ktx.

This thread has been great - and prompted me to actually speak up for a change! I've been going to crops for years - weekend getaways, LSS, and at people's homes. As a CMC, I also host crops of my own (which is what makes this thread so interesting to me!).

In defense of CM: We are NOT all alike! There is no such thing as "contraband" at my crops, because I use a variety of products myself (I have a weakness for Jolee's). I once went to a weekend crop with some friends of mine, which was hosted by another CMC that I just met. She looked at all the supplies I brought, and she couldn't believe that I was also a CMC. (I've never been real good at sticking to one product line, but I chose to be a CMC to get discounts on all my purchases, and to make a couple extra bucks along the way).

I'm really sorry that many of you had such bad experiences - I would never treat anyone like that! And for those of you who haven't tried CM in a long time, you might want to give them another chance. They've got embellishments now that have REAL ribbon, REAL metal grommets, and REAL adhesive foam tabs for dimension (like pop-dots). And lots of stuff for digital creations as well. (Don't worry - I'm not here to sell; I just want to set the record straight!).

This thread opens my eyes to things that really bug people at crops, which I appreciate as I am currently planning my big fall day crop. I hope I never make the same mistakes that I see listed here! (and I hope that if I do, somebody would tell me so that I can correct it!)

One crop I went to was a 12 hr crop and we were told no kids. I got a sitter for my kids until DH got home from work. I got there a little late because of the sitter and found that the only seat left was right next to a stroller with a baby about six months old sitting there waving toys around. I was like, WTF?

I went to the crop hostess and asked why there was a baby there and she said the mom had no one to watch the baby because her DH was away. Of course no one else chose to sit by the baby, so I got stuck. She stayed the whole 12 hours with the baby there the whole time.

Well at least the time I was there. I packed up after about 6 hours. If I want to crop with kids I can crop at home. Why do people set rules about no kids for some people and then make exceptions we all have to put up with for others?

I know moms with kids can feel isolated, but if a crop, event or class is not for kids, then the mom can find one that is. It really bugs me when hostesses make exceptions for one person and don't even think that the rest of us might not want kids there.

snomogo--PLEASE do not think that I started this thread in any way to bash CMCs! I have actually had a better track record with CM crops than I have with non-CM ones. I just had a couple of great stories and knew that there were Peas out there with horror stories also.

What I've learned from my crop nightmares....DO NOT DO SECRET SANTA/SCRAPPER GIFT EXCHANGE!!! I think I do thoughtful gifts and I end up with thoughtless/regifted/out of date stuff. The best exchange and the last was when I ended up with my own gift and no one wanted to exchange before I "opened" it. Oh surprise, its a yankee candle with a topper and plate. About 5 women jumped to exchange it, but nope I was a b!itch and keep it.

This is soo great!! I host crops so its helpful and enertaining to me to read this stuff then go OMG! I hope this doesnt happen. But I got a good one that happened to us:

We hosted our 1st and only ever summer crop at a VERY CAMPY LAKEY PLACE trust me and this girl aint no camper. Day 1 we go to set up the place is locked and camp ranger no where to be found and not answering cell phone. Finally get in and set up. THEN we get an awful Oklahoma summer storm POOF there goes the electricity and for quite some time we had none by dark some were scrapping by flashlights and hey I give em kudos cause I was panicked. THEN lake people show up with generators and I am flirting like hell to get our electricity 1st before anyone else and my other 2 cohorts had gone to town to find who was in charge to help us well one returned and I had been accosting her brother!! SERIOUS she sent him out with his friend and he is a police office in the town close to the lake!! Nice huh? It seriously was the hottest sweatiest thing until the electricity came on. OH and we always have scorpians wherever we go.

Some of these stories are so funny!

I have been to tons of crops and some funny stuff has happened but the one story that still has me shaking my head happened about 2 years ago.

My friend and I had gone to a Friday night crop (6 til midnight) at a store about an hour away. When we walked in (a bit late) a girl we knew kind of snickered and said she hoped we could find room. As we got to the crop area we notice three ladies...and their babies, set up at the 8 person table. They had crap spread out all the way around the tables and all over the top as well.

We seriously had to push their stuff out of the way (they were oblivious and didn't even apologize) and we had to squish into our chairs because they had piles off stuff against the wall behind us. To make matters even worse, one of their babies crawled under the table all night. How unsafe!

They were actually nice, just clueless. I will never forget that night!

The LSS that I used to frequent (it is now closed) had these once a month free project classes. They would be sponsored by a major manufacturer and we would make 1 LO and a small project, with all materials provided, for free. They were excellent and I went every month. This particular one was going to be using Cat's Eye Chalk Inks, I was addicted to them at the time, so I went out into the store and purchased the colors we were going to be using, so I wouldn't have to wait for the class samples to be passed around. I figured that I would let the people next to me use them as well, since they had let me use some of their glue dots the month before. So when it came time to ink, I used my own inks and then passed them to the lady next to me, explaining that I had purchased these and she could use them rather than wait. She set them down and the lady next to her grabbed them up, I thought, not a big deal I will just ask for them back. So when she was finished, I said "Excuse me, could I have my inks back?" She proceeded to tell me no, that they were for the whole class to "share". I explained that I had purchased those for my own use, and she didn't believe me! After countless explanations by me and they lady sitting next to me, the woman asked the teacher!!! Luckily the teacher showed her that their class samples were all marked with the store name to eliminate such confusion and the woman gave them back to me. I couldn't believe it. I felt like I was in high school and she was tattling to the teacher!

OH and we always have scorpians wherever we go.

We have this problem at the crops I host. We can't seem to do anything about them nor can the HOA (who owns the clubhouse we use). We also have to go through a forest of spiders to get back to our cars. They aren't there when we come in, but I guess they spend our entire cropping time 'setting up house'.

And MAN, I hate bugs.

Wow - I'm glad I don't live in scorpion country! that would seriously freak me out.

But I've gone to those weekend camp deals as well, and there's been numerous situations (I'm not a camper either - although it's not too completely rustic where we go). Anyways, as far as bugs go, sometimes we (in Minnesota) get infested by "Asian beetles" (I think that's what those big yellow-orange lady bug-like things are). One late night after cropping, I was heading to bed so I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth, and I felt something hit me in the head, like a pebble falling from the ceiling. I looked up, and it was the grossest sight - bunches of those creepy beetles clinging to the ceiling, all gravitating towards the light above the bathroom mirror. I high-tailed it out of there, and didn't return to the bathroom until a member of the staff had cleaned it the next day.

We call those beetles, June Bugs in California because they appear in June and are gone by July. They totally gross me out. They just bump into things like they have no eyes or something.

Keep up the stories, I just love them!

The faux ladybugs are the Asian/Japanese Beetles.

What I call JuneBugs are more black and katydid like. After watching these June bugs fly into things upon emerging for the evening, my friends started calling them Doofus Bugs.

So then she just stacked stuff ON TOP of my stuff, including putting her DINNER on my PICTURES.

I'm fairly non-confrontational, too, but I wouldn't have tolerated the above behavior. The first time she put stuff on my stuff, I would ask her nicely to move it. If she didn't or continued to do it, I'd move it myself...right onto the floor.

The faux ladybugs are the Asian/Japanese Beetles

Around here (Phoenix), Japanese Beetles look like big cockroaches that fly. I kid you not. They hang out in the palm trees and just wait for their next victim. *shudder*

I talked my two friends into going to a 24 hour crop at an LSS about 30 minutes from where we live whose owner is really not very nice, but at that time had lots of great products and classes. One of my friends has an allergic reaction to the store (dust, mold?) and has sneezing attacks! The bathroom is across the parking lot in a separate building and is filthy. The owner had advertised a catered dinner from one of my favorite restaurants, prizes all night, breakfast, snacks, and drinks. Instead, she made chili in a crockpot with fritos mixed in, but it gets better. The crockpot fell over in the car while one of the girls who worked in the store brought over from the owner's home! She just added more fritos! The salad was a pre-bagged mix just sitting on the table with the top open and a bottle of dressing next to it. There were rolls presented the same way. They did a prize drawing once and then forgot to do the rest. No snacks, just leftovers from "dinner." Half the people went out and got dinner. The next morning the owner was too tired to come back to the store so she just called in and told everyone to go next door to the bagel shop and get a bagel and coffee (she did pay). My two friends and I still had a great time mostly because we were laughing so hard. We never went back and they lost three good customers who spent money there. Lucky for us a fabulous LSS that we love opened near us. They still give me grief for that crop and we still laugh.

I, along with my CMc- who happens to also be my best friend, hostess a crop at least once a month at where I work. She invites all her customers and I invite people who I know that scrapbook. We always have food, and snacks and there is a vending machine for sodas if no one brings any.
It always works out that if we need something we take up a collection and one of us will go to the store for lunch. One of our friends come with her cosmetics of the PINK variety and peddle her wares. My BF was sort of a loss to stop her, because she was our friend. but when no one would buy anything she quit doing that. I sell skincare too, but i don't push it at a crop, there is a place and time for that. A girl brought her son a couple of times because her sitter bailed on her, so we all gave him a punch and some paper and he had a ball, for about 20 minutes. He's a good kid and at 5 he was just bored. She just scrapped away though.

We went to a two-nighter. in her hometown held by her sister CM consultants and there were people there selling their make and takes and other scrap related projects that no one said anything about non-CM stuff. That was a fun crop experience. My BF and i were the "late nighters" and we went into the dorm room at about 1 am and everyone was sleeping and I had the top bunk and I was so tired I had to get a chair and climb up. and I am a big girl so it was hard to do that and laugh quietly! D the next day we realized that the lower bunk across from us was empty and I could have slept there We got punch happy in the evenings so we would hop in her car and drive out in the country and let the windows down and clear our heads, come back and crop all with fresh perspective. We had a good time. There was an "eyelet pounder" but no one said anything ugly about it. i think the worst part was the sitting, so I would get up and walk around and visit, since I knew a lot of the women there, and look at their projects. And no one was overly rude or cliqueish, the hostesses went around and made sure everyone was doing ok.

I haven't had any horror stories yet!
I haven't been to the crops at our LSS either. I have my own space at home so I can crop every day! Why pay to go somewhere to sit and be annoyed and uncomfortable?

OH and to the person who is single and was asked" What possibly could you have to scrapbook?" I'd have said " My freedom. Myself. and My wonderfully exciting life that I live with out the restrictions of needy children or a demanding husband." and then I would have laughed.
(I am single and I have found plenty to scrapbook!)

OK, since this is still going, this is a story I heard about recently about a crop I went to. I normally go to a nice crop in a rented space where we have alot of room, but when I arrived the place was packed. There were so many tables we could hardly move! I saw alot of new faces, too, including some who had brought youngsters with them who were also scrapping along. It is normally understood, that we don't bring young kids.

I found out afterward that when they had brought all their own tables, so they wouldn't have to pay, or so they thought! Since the cost of the crop was $10 for a table, they thought if they brought their own tables it was free! They had like 5 tables in there all day! The crop hostess apparently had to catch them on the way out and try to collect the crop fee for all of them.

Now the hostess knows that she has to specify $10 a person, each of whom gets their own table, and no bringing your own tables and crowding the rest of us.

China Doll, I know what you mean about the bathroom in the LSS in Los Al...I have been to that one on Sundays...everyone who attends is pretty nice although the people who work there tend to be snobby imo...I heard they were closing and moving to Garden Grove.

Well I have a couple stories and haven't been to a crop in ages.
Let me preface this by saying I have nothing against those that are very religous and am genuinely impressed by those that are strong in their beliefs.

But, being stuck with one lady a few different nights for crops I for the had to walk away.

Just like there are those that don't feel it is appropriate to bring the bedroom into the croproom. I prefer to save any sermons for Sunday.

This is of course after I've listened to the Roe vs. Wade debate, the belief that Halloween is worshipping Satan therefore it isn't appropriate for children to dress in costumes, and JK Rowlings is a voice for Satan. These were just a few of the highlights of the crop nights that she would show up to. And the kicker was she didn't scrapbook. Never in all the times that she would come in did she bring anything, buy anything to scrapbook. I always liked to tease the owner in saying I was going to start referring to her as the God Warrior.

Oh and then there was the time the owner thought to try to fix me up with one of her husband's co-workers. This is the condensed version of the story because I for the life of me can't find my original thread.

Let's just say upon receiving the first of his maybe 5 phone calls to my cell phone and store because according to her he was so excited to meet me (everyone else was thinking psycho). And him showing up like he just rolled out of bed (and I swear he was drunk) to bring me a rose from a gas station with some crazy a**
poem that had everyone in the crop room busting out in laughter. Yea I was lucky enough to be involved in that crop nightmare. And I can honestly say it was witnessed by two other peas.

I've got a good one....at my very first crop which I had to drive almost two hours away to attend, I had no friends went solo. Right of the bat, someone put on the Christian music, without asking, which I have no prob with the Christian music I love most of it and have several albums, but when I scrap I WANT MY 80'S. Anyhoo...got past that and then the next day just before lunch, we were all sitting around and talking and one lady was sitting on the floor and I kept hearing a weird noise and I couldn't figure out what it was it was a sucking? slurping? vaccumming noise? So I stood up to figure out what it was and low and behold the lady on the floor had brought her breast pump and was pumping milk right there in front of everyone and all the while holding a conversation with everyone, it was full frontal shirt lifted up and both boobs were being milked ....man the expression on my face had to be priceless. She was very nonchalant, put the milk in containers and put in the fridge with all of our snacks, LOL. I was not expecting that at all, LOL.....I really wasn't offended, just didn't realize that I got a free show with my fee, LOL. That is just something you don't expect to see at a crop. Nobody else seemed to be bothered by it, so I took it all in stride as well, however the remainder of the weekend when I would hear the suction noise, I stay put!!!

I went to an all day crop in February. It's a store I sometimes frequent, and generally the staff, food, giveaways etc are all great. The store had just moved to a new location and it had two floors - one for the store, another with a HUGE crop area. The crop sounded fun!

I asked a friend to come with me, and we both went. We both have babies (who we left at home), and running late we ended up arriving about 10:30am to the crop which started at 10 (not too late).

I arrived before my friend and was sad to see that there were no spots where we could sit together. I was sad, but hey...we got there late, and we'd talk at snack, lunch etc. No biggie. I knew a lot of other people at the crop, and so did she.

I went up to several empty seats and each time was told it was being "saved" for someone else. Honestly there were no more empty seats!

So, as my friend was arriving I asked the crop hostess where was a place for me to sit, and she looked around and said - uh-oh, looks like we're all full. WTH?? I paid $25.00 for the crop in advance, so had my friend and they'd overbooked.

Their solution? A little cardtable with crappy folding chairs waaay over in the corner. Only plus to that was that I sat with my friend.

The worst part was all day for draws, snacks, lunch, make and takes etc they ALWAYS forgot we were there. We'd always call out that hey, we're over here, but we both totally felt like an afterthought. They also did some games where they sold raffle tickets etc, and never included us. I left feeling really crappy about the whole thing.

It really turned me off the store and the staff in general, and now I rarely shop there, and although they keep telling me when the crops are I won't ever go to one again. I've found a much nicer store in the area to crop at where it's fun, and lots of space

Not a nightmare necessarily, but falls in the category of "I Can't Believe You Said That":

I was cropping photos of my adorable (OK, I think she is) 4 yo daughter - came across one where she'd started to blink so her eyes were 1/2 open -

And the girl next to me says:

"Is that a picture of your daughter? Gee, she looks stoned."

Gee - here's a dollar, go buy a clue..........

(this gal was at the crop all weekend but wasn't even a scrapper - she just wandered by every now and then adding her commentary to the festivities - and a collective cheer went up when she finally left)

This isn't really a nightmare story but I went to a crop when I was very, very pg with my youngest. (like a week before delivered) It was an all day thing and I was working on a christmas present for my dh. Anyway. The way the room was set up there were seats on the central aisle. They put me in one of those which in and of itself would have been fine, but the lady they sat directly behind me was um....very large.

Anytime anyone needed past to eat, go to the bathroom, shop or whatever, one of us had to get up. And I was usually the one that got up. That got very annoying after a bit.
